Caroline Kennedy for Vice President? Whispers Around Washington and Around the World

In this series, wowOwow follows the political news swirling around Caroline Kennedy since her surprise endorsement of Barack Obama and high-profile placement on his VP selection committee. Could Caroline be ready to launch a political career of her own? With The Caroline Kennedy Candidacy Watch, we’ll follow all the latest news. We welcome insider insight and tips; please email carolinewatch@wowowow.com.

Since starting the Caroline Kennedy Candidacy Watch, we’ve been bombarded with leads and alerts and asides and innuendo. The current buzziest notion currently circulating is the conjecture that Barack Obama will select Kennedy herself to take the Vice Presidential slot on the Democratic ticket. Crazy, right? That’s why we’ve ignored it for two weeks — mostly because our first link to it came from offshore. Way offshore. But since the rumor is gaining mention in the blogosphere, we felt it was our duty to our wowOwow audience to bring it to their attention and let them decide.

About two weeks ago, TimesNOW, an English language Indian news site that is a joint venture between Reuters and The Times Group of India, ran the following report suggesting that Caroline Kennedy would be the Democratic nominee for Vice President.

Then, earlier this week, one of the mainstream media’s political blogs, Paul Bedard’s Washington Whispers from US News & World Report, reported the same idea — Kennedy as Obama’s VP pick — calling it a "juicy rumor."

Then, two days ago, one of our favorite Hillary blogs, HillBuzz, had this to say about the matter (also citing Washington Whispers):

"We’ve been saying this for a few weeks now: Caroline Kennedy is the best choice Obama could make in a VP. People who can’t stand Obama will just enjoy marking a ballot for a Kennedy. They love the romance of the president’s daughter becoming VP. It cements the Obama-Kennedy link the Obama campaign has meticulously and shamelessly nurtured thoughout this campaign — and, most importantly of all, it allows the increasingly irrelevant Kennedy family to maintain its position of national prominence when Ted Kennedy leaves the Senate …"

So, the beat goes on … as does wowOwow’s Caroline Kennedy Candidacy Watch. We’re still betting Caroline eventually takes over Uncle Ted’s seat in the Senate, but Caroline for Veep? Makes for fun midsummer cocktail chatter in our opinion, anyway. And remember … wowOwow was the first with the Caroline Kennedy Candidacy Watch.

Did Karl Rove think this up? What a brilliant, brilliant man.

I think Karl Rove is too busy running McCain’s down in the mud negativity campaign to be personally involved with this, but you never know.

Omigod. An inexperienced president and a vp who has never been elected for anything. Ha. I agree Karl Rove may have dreamed this up.

There is a history of VP’s being chosen themselves after they have headed a committee to find one. Caroline would bring dignity, class and great intelligence to the office. She and Obama are both heavyweights in terms of those qualities. If you want lots of experience in doing the wrong things, vote for McCain.

Say it isn’t so. But don’t ask Solis Doyle for her advice. Peace and grace

Much as I like Caroline, if she becomes the Democratic VP nominee then that’s just further confirmation that this is all showbiz, with an emphasis on the show part. We are voting on and employing a person for the most powerful job in the world. This is about governance of a super power (a super power which is on the hit list of many rogue nations.) Winning should not be the only aim. Putting the most experienced, wise, seasoned and worthy candidate in that position should be. The country is currently in shambles from placing a charismatic candidate with no chops in this position for the last 7 years. I am voting for McCain. He is no darling to the Republican base, and that in itself should tell disenfranchised Democrats that he’s someone worth looking at. Sure, he is selling the right’s agenda at present to gather support of the base, but expect a more balanced presidency once he holds the reins of power in his fist. As for the showbiz of Change and Hope - it will all burn out when reality hits. Hey, come to think of it, that would be a great new reality show… Obama - the first 100 days. Tune in folks and watch the newbie flounder in the Oval Office after he discovers that slogans and prepared speeches lifted from other politicians’ texts mean squat to hostile foreign leaders.

My Alias: “As for the showbiz of Change and Hope - it will all burn out when reality hits.” And the sooner the better. I know it’s internet fodder, but I saw a petition going around the other day to impeach him as a senator. There are so many people who are still so angry, I can’t see how this can end well.

Impeach? On what grounds?

My Alias: “Sure, he is selling the right’s agenda at present to gather support of the base, but expect a more balanced presidency once he holds the reins of power in his fist.” I’m not sure I understand what you mean. What parts of the “right’s agenda” will he forswear and what parts will he adhere to?

Caroline Kennedy is too smart to accept the role as the Democratic Vice Presidential nominee even if Senator Obama offered it to her. The offer, itself, would be a sign of desperation in the Obama campaign. I have also heard that, if elected, he is considering the possibility of asking Mr. Gates to continue as Secretary of Defense. Caroline has been around politics too long and would be aware of the negative fallout if her name was put forward.

I can certainly see her taking the place of her uncle in the senate. I cannot see her, yet, as the VP. She doesn’t have any experience.
