Manson Murderess Begs for Mercy

By The Staff at wowOwow.com

In August 1969 she slit the throat of a pregnant woman begging for mercy. Today, she’s hoping she has better luck when asking for the same from the government.

A former member of the Manson family, Susan Atkins, 60, has requested a "compassionate release" from prison on the grounds that she is terminally ill and has less than six months to live, Department of Corrections spokeswoman Terry Thornton told wowOwow.

The Golden State’s longest-serving female inmate, Atkins was convicted in 1969 for the murders of actress Sharon Tate (who was eight months pregnant) and four others. Perhaps the most gripping detail from the case file was that, before leaving the crime scene, Atkins wrote "PIG" in blood on Tate’s front door.

Atkins received the death sentence, which later was commuted to life in prison at the California Institution for Women in Corona, CA, where she remained until she was hospitalized in March. She’s listed in serious condition and, while Thornton declined to comment on her illness, it’s been reported that she has been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer.

According to Thornton, the prison did an evaluation of Atkins’s release request and found that she met the two necessary criteria — she is terminally ill with an incurable condition that would cause death in six months AND she has a supportive family with the means to care of her – to be recommended for review by the corrections department. If the corrections department makes a positive recommendation, the decision then goes to the sentencing court, which will do one of three things: deny the request, recall the original sentence and re-sentence to a lower term (which could result in a full discharge) or recall the original sentence and place her under parole supervision.

The Los Angeles Times’s op-ed says that Atkins should not be granted the release. What are your thoughts on this?

Dona, I am so sorry for your horrible loss, and also glad that you found some measure of peace. Am always the most bleeding heart liberal in any room willing to forgive and forget—most of the time. I agree with you. Not this. No way. There was no mercy shown Sharon Tate and her baby….or the others.

Dona - in 2002 I lost a friend who was the sister I never had. A mother of three…beloved wife…killed on her way to pick up milk at a mini mart…a drunk driving a big E Class Mercedes hit her mini van broad side going 75 in a 35…even though she had her seat belt on and had air bags, she was ejected through the passenger side window. He walked away without a scratch…his defense? “Its my anniversary and I didn’t want to be late for our dinner reservation.” I was godmother to her children, in the delivery room when each of them came into the world. I walked into the chaos and carnage of that household the day after her passing…seeing a family totally destroyed. My godchildren (the youngest was 7) could not grasp that this magical, marvelous woman had been taken. The man who murdered her? He got a slap on the wrist…until her Father, who was wealthy enough to pursue him…won damages in a civil suit, insuring his grandchildren’s future. The murderer? He just went on with his life…other than monetary penalties, he paid nothing. He suffered nothing. Will I forgive him and feel I am the “better person”? Never. Would I give anything for ten minutes alone in a room with the drunken coward? You bet. Its not about “stooping”…its about an eye for an eye. Had he ever shown remorse of any kind, maybe I would feel different. In his court appearance, he blamed my friend…saying she should have driven “a safer, more reliable vehicle since she was a Mother.” Tell me how much mercy he deserves.

Oh JB……..I didn’t let go of the hate to forgive the man who murdered my child and kidnapped my precious grandchilddren. (never to be found)………No I let go of the hate because it was destroying me. I’m sure he would have liked nothing better than to have destroyed our whole family…….My heart breaks for my son who will never get over the pain of his losses. I just know that for years the hatred I held for the murderer just ate at me like a rampant cancer. I just decided I was going to love myself enough to let go of the hate………It doesn’t mean I don’t still detest the act he committed. I do. I abhor the pain he’s caused all my family. My (now) 31 year old granddaughter who was 8 months old at the time. She grew up without her mother or sisters…….Pain is different than hatred…….I live with the pain and always will. But I could no longer have a decent life with the hatred. I hope you can have peace ……I send you my very best.

Dona, That is so wise and well put. Since I read your post the other day, I have thought about you often. The tremendous dignity that you illustrate by your example really touches me. I cannot imagine how you got through that. Thank you for opening up your life to us. You are a great example.

Thank You, Fluffy and Dona - I have some peace, and perhaps this hit me so hard because this is my annual “Beach Week” with her children. A tradition we started when she had her first child…I continued it after her passing. Two weeks ago I watched her oldest son graduate from High School with honors. In the fall he will attend the Ivy League university she dreamed he would attend. I didn’t think he would want to travel with his GodMother this year, being 18 and “cool” etc. He was appalled that I had the thought! “Nee-Nee! What would Mom say if I didn’t hang with you and my brother and sister?” Indeed. So I have watched them this week, ages 13, 16, and 18…and I see her in each one of them. Last night we had a picnic at sunset, as we always have…a pod of dolphins appeared just off shore…and her daughter said “Wow! Thanks for the dolphins Mom!” They firmly believe each magical moment of their lives is engineered by their Mother, and so do I. I asked them how much longer we’ll be taking these trips, and it was unanimous…”Nee-Nee! We’ll take them always, some day we’ll bring our kids, and if you can’t walk to the beach by then, we’ll carry you!” Oh, and I am not their “formal” GodMother…my friend, in her wisdom upon the birth of her first child, decided her children should have a “formal” and a “fairy” GodMother. So another friend is in charge of the more traditional duties…I am in charge of all things fun, wacky, and magic. Took them to their first Broadway show, taught them to kayak, do the beach week every year, and I know ALL of the scoop on their girlfriends, crushes, etc. I lost my dear friend, but she left me such a legacy in her children. No matter where they are in the world (their Father works for a Global company) they return each year for “our week”. Blessings to you all, I know I’m counting mine this week.

Imprisonment until death.

Best not to release Atkins. Unlike the Scarsdale Diet doctor’ murderer Jean Harris who faded into obscurity upon her release, Susan Atkins would go on the talk show circuit to drum up publicity for a book and movie deal glamorizing the Manson cult.

Well, except that she has a brain tumor and can barely walk across the room or make a sentence.

Make you can provide a link to the alleged symptoms of her brain tumor. I can’t find this “can barely walk across the room or make a sentence” on the Internet….which should be very easy to do if were actually reported. Not to mention it doesn’t matter. None of her 8 victims or the little baby could walk across a room or make a sentence either after she got through with them

The Los Angeles Times reports that Atkins had suffered from brain cancer and had undergone amputation of one of her legs. So, as I said, I don’t think she’ll be writing a book or going on the talk-show circuit.

So no story said she can’t talk or walk across the room. She’s had a leg amputated for a long time and has been walking with a prosthesis, and brain cancer doesn’t mean you can’t speak. My brother-in-law had it, Ted Kennedy has it. You just made up specific symptoms that aren’t in any news story. Whether she can write a book or go on news shows has no relevance anyway.

Gee, that’s strange…..can’t find ANY symptoms mentioned anywhere not even doing a Google News search. Even her husband and the prison spokesperson and EVERY NEWS story I read—-none had symptoms. The AP, CNN etc said this: Department of Corrections spokeswoman Terry Thornton declined to specify the nature of her illness. “She is very ill” and has been hospitalized, said Thornton. “Her condition is very serious and her prognosis is poor,” she said. Thornton said a doctor determined that Atkins has less than six months to live, which could make the application for release futile because of the length of the process. Such releases are relatively rare — only 10 of the 60 requests made last year were granted, Thornton said. The matter could be referred to the sentencing court in Los Angeles, she said, which could delay the decision even further. What was mentioned in the news stories however was what she said about her mass murder of 8 totally innocent victims and a about to be born baby; she said at the end of her trial, “I feel no guilt for what I’ve done. It was right then and I still believe it was right.” Interesting. So Mugsy, did you just make up symptoms? Because why is there no news source or the prison stating them? Sounds that way to me. That’s you brand of logic…..argue that ‘principled’ people have compassion and mercy and clemency for a mass murderer….and then recant and state you personally hope she stays in prison so she is safe from bloggers like who don’t think she should be released under any circumstances. Since this was a random crime just mass murdering the occupants of that particular house in as grisly a manner as possible. And since you expressed that if we were principled we’d want clemency and have compassion and mercy…..How would you feel if the innocent person who’d been murdered in that manner was Candace Bergen. She lived in that house. What would you say then. “can barely walk across the room or make a sentence.” Please provide a link because I think you just made this up.
