Manson Murderess Begs for Mercy

By The Staff at wowOwow.com

In August 1969 she slit the throat of a pregnant woman begging for mercy. Today, she’s hoping she has better luck when asking for the same from the government.

A former member of the Manson family, Susan Atkins, 60, has requested a "compassionate release" from prison on the grounds that she is terminally ill and has less than six months to live, Department of Corrections spokeswoman Terry Thornton told wowOwow.

The Golden State’s longest-serving female inmate, Atkins was convicted in 1969 for the murders of actress Sharon Tate (who was eight months pregnant) and four others. Perhaps the most gripping detail from the case file was that, before leaving the crime scene, Atkins wrote "PIG" in blood on Tate’s front door.

Atkins received the death sentence, which later was commuted to life in prison at the California Institution for Women in Corona, CA, where she remained until she was hospitalized in March. She’s listed in serious condition and, while Thornton declined to comment on her illness, it’s been reported that she has been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer.

According to Thornton, the prison did an evaluation of Atkins’s release request and found that she met the two necessary criteria — she is terminally ill with an incurable condition that would cause death in six months AND she has a supportive family with the means to care of her – to be recommended for review by the corrections department. If the corrections department makes a positive recommendation, the decision then goes to the sentencing court, which will do one of three things: deny the request, recall the original sentence and re-sentence to a lower term (which could result in a full discharge) or recall the original sentence and place her under parole supervision.

The Los Angeles Times’s op-ed says that Atkins should not be granted the release. What are your thoughts on this?

eleanor roche…….. Thank you for writing. Yes, Suzanne, and Mugsy were extrememly sympathetic as have been most of the other people commenting on this subject. I just feel bad that it has turned into a name calling situation. I remember when I was growing up we had great debates in our house. My Father had one RULE……We could get as excited, bold and attacking against the opposing view but never attack the individual. I raised my children that way. We’ve had wonderful discussions because of that rule. Thanks for the compliment about my age………I just turned 76 this month. My granddaughter will be 32 next month. I tell my son who is almost 57 that I look young enough to be his sister. I started out Young………only 19 1/2 when I had my first child. My granddaughter was also the same age when she had my first great grandson…..he’s 12. Here’s on to the new Question of the day and some new and interesting articles on the site today. Again………Thanks to all who have had kind words for me.

Dona, that’s what I so admire about you, to be involved with life, interested in others and to be as kind as you are! I had to learn a similar lesson (on a much less severe level) and it took me a long time to realize, that revenge is not our job and that hatred only poisons one’s own soul. You are a great example to all of us here!

Ulla- You don’t know what communications I’ve had with others nor do you know why I feel very strongly (as do the vast majority, the courts, the victims families) on this potential release. If other people wish to support the release of a mass murderer and go against the families wishes, that’s their business, just don’t characterize those against it (the majority and the Director of Prisons, and the families of the victims) as being “unprincipled etc”

The death penalty takes a life, exactly what this person did and she is in jail, being punished for her actions. The life in prison sentence means the remainder of a person’s entire life is spent in prison. Temper justice with mercy, and let this woman life the rest of her life in prison, under a doctor’s care, with visits permitted by members of her immediate family. I would hope the prison would allow her mother (if she is still living) to be with her at the end of her life.

KF—She isn’t in prison she has been in a nearby hospital since march…with her husband as her atty he can visit as often as he wishes. Her mother isn’t alive. And the real point is that she wants to go stay by the beach in Laguna when she dies. She should have thought of that when she butchered 8 innocent people and a baby, and told Sharon Tate when she begged for her life and that of her 8 1/2 month fetus, a boy she’d already named Paul, that she had no mercy for her and she was going to die. This was after she’d already murdered a musicain a week before, and she lets Sharon tate live through the horror of having her three friends killed first to terrorize her more. Then she went back and danced and laughed that murder was fun and more fun each time she did it. She went out the next night and killed two more completedly innocent people. She got off death row by a fluke of timing. She was able to have a life, marry in prison etc. She denied that to 8 innocent people and a baby….Sharon Tate;s mother was in serious depression over her Daughter from 1969 to 1982 until she started working for victims rights. She changed many laws to ensure justice for the victims. She and her other daughter Patti died fighting every parole request….now the other daughter has said do not let this woman out. There were more than 100 family members of victims devastated at the brutal way their loved ones died in one of the most grisly senseless killings of the 20th century. Susan Atkins got off death row by a fluke of timing…..she doesn’t deserved misplaced compassion her victims deserve their rights to justice. And go through an emotional roller coaster at each parole hearing Atkins has been denied 17 times. And she’ll be denied this last time. If she wanted to die near the beach she shouldn’t have mass murdered 8 people and a baby and set her own fate.

I am against the death penalty but don’t think she should be released. They commuted her death sentence and she got life in prison, that should be the end of it. When she dies it’s over, period.

My, my Suzanne, you sure have been busy here! For what it’s worth, I totally agree with your take on this subject. I actually read most of your posts, which to my amazement, were quite factual and logical. You kind of lost me when you went off the deep end attacking Mugsy. Is that really necessary? Why do you have to knock people over the head with your opinions? She just doesn’t agree with you, period, accept it. I know she can come off sort of pompous and arrogant at times, but that’s just the way she is. Come to terms with it, I have. Your arguments and facts were well presented here. If you weren’t so busy insulting Frank and Mugsy, you would have noticed that a majority of posters agreed with your position—including myself, Lady Gator and Bonnie O—people who don’t normally follow your tenets.

Frank—I’ve taken a lot of “sniper fire” myself and I don’t really like it, even when it’s not directed at me. I realize people need to defend themselves, but sometimes, it does get out of hand. It’s easy to get caught up in something when you just know that your right—so I understand—since I’m guilty of it as well.
