We Now Interrupt the Doom and Gloom

Liz Smith

Our friend of wowOwow.com, Charlie Rose of the all-encompassing and erudite talk show on Public Broadcasting, gave us a great kickoff when this site started. Like the rest of thinking America, we gain so much watching Charlie mount intelligent interviews night after night. But not too long ago, Charlie presented the Washington columnist, commentator, George Will, in a talkfest that was highly unusual.

Mr. Will, an intellectual of the William Buckley stripe, made news by – ta, da! – being upbeat. We have edited out some of this interview, but savor the body itself. Because, in these days of doom and gloom and Cassandra-like bad news, George Will surprised us with his optimism. (Of course, it’s not all optimistic and we may not always agree with Mr. Will.)

Click here for the transcript, which Charlie was kind enough to share with us.

And here’s the video from the show.

I’d like to know what you think. Let’s hear it from the teachers out there. Did these thoughts from Charlie Rose and George Will make you feel better or worse?

Can’t get the video turned on. The arrow-in-a-circle is nowhere to be found. Reloaded, but the problem persists. Only me?

Yes, I remember that interview, and George was upbeat on the economy. He did not see rising gas and food prices as a “negative” issue. Thank God the economy is fine! America would just be dandy if we took the Conservative approach to taxes, pension, education, Iraq, etc. What the hell was I thinking? I have seen the light!!!

Hi, Deni! I love your new avatar! At first I thought it was an odd telephone pole (apropos, since we are all “talking” here) but now I have it figured out! It spells “tree” :-)

Thanks Peg!

I made the tree for Edith Ann.

And now my goat crossing sign in Greece is back!

I see that!! I know how much goat herding in Greece means to you, so I was surprised at the change. It makes sense now. My internet was down for several days, so I think I missed the Edith Ann post. There was A LOT going on while I was incommunicado!! I am playing catch-up now.

obviously, carol, i still need to see the benefit in rising prices. does it wipe out deadbeats like me, leaving only the upper crust and a few servants?

I am really quite sad that wOw tells us all this stuff about these insider new york men who are really not very interesting and when our dear George Carlin dies, there is nothing. George Carlin was a dear and beautiful light in our generation and so many of us bought our first comedy albums being Ms. Tomlin and Mr. Carlin. I vote for hi-jacking this thread as a memory for him. Anyone?

Another one of my favorite Carlin quotes: “I have as much authority as the Pope, I just don’t have as many people who believe it.”

The Seven Words you cannot say on television. He got arrested for Seven Words. I thought he was brilliant. Him, I will mourn.
