Chinese Women Seek More Kids

The Chinese government likes to be in touch with its people, but that doesn’t mean they heed their word!

A recent survey found that 70% of women would like to have more than one child, in spite of a procreative prohibition enforced by the Communist government. Despite this overwhelming desire, authorities insist they simply won’t allow it!

The authorities say the policy, which will not be relaxed, has prevented hundreds of millions of births and has helped to make people wealthier.

The research was conducted in 2006 but has only been released now.

China has the world’s biggest population, of more than 1.3 billion people.

It has restricted many families to one child since the late 1970s, though in most rural areas couples are allowed a second child if their first is a girl. Different birth-control policies also apply to some ethnic-minority groups.

Most of the women said they believe only children are lonely and a staggering number, over 80%, said they want at least a son and a daughter. The nation’s strict laws also have a detrimental effect on the female population — since men are preferred, many women opt to abort girl fetuses.

…since men are preferred, many women opt to abort girl fetuses. I wonder how all these preferred men are making out finding wives. What a crazy imbalance they have created. I have met a few adopted Chinese little girls, they are such a delight that I’m sure their mothers would have loved them. But this isn’t about the mothers it’s about the government. Helped to make people wealthier, they say? I would ask, in what way?

If this doesn’t prove that ‘money can’t buy happiness’, I don’t know what would. For a large number of the human population, personal satisfaction/happiness is found within relationships with family members and good friends.

As an only child who always wanted siblings, I can fully understand the aspect of loneliness that Chinese women describe. But I also know that China is overpopulated. When I read this article I immediately thought of families whose only children were killed last year during the earthquake in Sichuan Province. For them, the “one child” rule is especially cruel. Wealth, or its illusion, can never replace what they lost.

I had heard that after certain disasters they did allow couples to have another child, but then you never “replace” one you lost anyhow.

The tragedy, Sandbee, is that most of the families who lost children in their teens and beyond, are too old to have another child. And, of course, you are right - replacing a child you have loved and nurtured cannot remove the grief.

I had heard that its not that more children aren’t “allowed”. But a 2nd child, except in certain instances like those mentioned, means that the family loses some of the subsidies they receive and/or the fees they will pay for the 2nd child’s education and such go up. Its more a penalty, a financial incentive if you will to limit family size. Which is the opposite of the U.S. policy, where if you have more kids, you get more tax breaks, are eligible for more government assistence, etc.

I think the chinese government will be suffering a backlash bigger than they may be able to handle regarding their children. They lost all those children in that earthquake and now their killing them off with the formula. I bet what we have heard about is a small portion of the truth and the numbers of dead babies. Mothers longing for babies will bring that government policy down.

I always wonder how the thousands of beautiful Chinese girls who have been adopted will feel about China when they’re old enough to realize their country and their parents didn’t value them.

I think mothers valued their baby girls, but it’s centuries of culture that did not and that belief is still embedded in the culture. For any government to tell parents just how many babies they should have is cruel. But let’s not forget China is the biggest violater of human rights and abuses the poor daily. Labor rights do not exist in this country and workers are treated like dogs.

Chinese women want more kids? I have a couple. Where should I send them?

Jim, you aren’t making any sense. It appears that the vast majority of people here feel sympathy for the women of China. Given that Obama is pro-choice, I don’t believe that he wants greater govermental control of women’s reproduction. I have my suspicions from reading a small number of your posts that you do favor governmental control in those areas where you believe the government will do what you want, and hypocritical you are against it when it would act in a manner you don’t want.

You seem a bit confused, Jim. The social conservatives and Christian fanatics are the ones trying to legislate the private lives of US citizens. Liberals, progressives, and moderate Republicans are the ones defending our rights. No woman posting on this topic has written anything remotely cruel. “Don’t give in to hate. That leads to the Dark Side.”
