Chinese Women Seek More Kids

The Chinese government likes to be in touch with its people, but that doesn’t mean they heed their word!

A recent survey found that 70% of women would like to have more than one child, in spite of a procreative prohibition enforced by the Communist government. Despite this overwhelming desire, authorities insist they simply won’t allow it!

The authorities say the policy, which will not be relaxed, has prevented hundreds of millions of births and has helped to make people wealthier.

The research was conducted in 2006 but has only been released now.

China has the world’s biggest population, of more than 1.3 billion people.

It has restricted many families to one child since the late 1970s, though in most rural areas couples are allowed a second child if their first is a girl. Different birth-control policies also apply to some ethnic-minority groups.

Most of the women said they believe only children are lonely and a staggering number, over 80%, said they want at least a son and a daughter. The nation’s strict laws also have a detrimental effect on the female population — since men are preferred, many women opt to abort girl fetuses.

Of course it is about the women. The government couldn’t enforce this if women didn’t comply. What are they going to do, put every woman with more than one child in prison? The social pressure from other women on these women to practice infanticide is enormous. Women often hate themselves and pass that hate right on to their daughters whether they raise them or drown them in a bucket. And they don’t care if their sons don’t marry, they want the sons to support them. If they want more children, they can have them. But they will find that just as in the U.S. and other nations, one’s standard of living, unless you are very wealthy, decreases with each child.

Not long ago there was a TV program about the one-child policy in China. I believe the policy is due to expire after more than 20 years of heartbreak and sorrow. However, from the article printed here it appears that the policy is going to continue beyond the legislated time. Kidnapping is a serious problem in China. Parents who have one child will hire kidnappers to bring them another child. The price for a male child is about 1/3 higher than than for a female. In addition, there is a growing and profitable business of child selling … especially in the outer provinces. A couple cannot marry without approval from the State and if a young unmarried woman becomes pregnant, she is forced by economic reasons to sell her child … hoping the child will be bought by a couple from the West (especially America). If she keeps the child, the women loses all benefits from the State - including her own education. The father too, if discovered. If a couple decides to have more than a single child, the entire family loses all State benefits and considering that China is a socialist country, that entails just about everything from education to food to housing. Finally, the wealthier Chinese couples will travel to Hong Kong or outside China to a clinic where in-vitro procedures are followed so that the Chinese wife will give birth to at least twins. Where there is cash, there is always a way to subvert the laws by which most citizens must live.

The only people that hate are Obama fanatics? What a strange opinion. Many people hate. Some of those people are “Obamamanics”, others are not. And I sincerely doubt that anyone believe Obama can fly … he’s not from Krypton. As for Bush, he certainly has destroyed much of this country. Perhaps remembering what things were like eight years ago is difficult for you, but as a refresher our economy was doing well, we weren’t hated by the world, we had a budget surplus, we weren’t engaged in useless “wars” and our president wasn’t giving trillions of dollars to his friends. All this makes me hope that Obama does turn out to be an amazing president, because that is what we need to pull ourselves out of the tailspin that eight years of Bush and Co. have put us in. Since you are against the government controlling our lives, I can only image that you feel same-sex marriage should be legal and that abortions should continue to be legal. After all, to say otherwise would be to feel that the government should control what sort of consenting adult spouse is appropriate and that the government should control whether a woman has children or not. In any case, I’ve gotten sidetracked. You say you don’t care about China. Fine. So why bother to post on a story about China? I’m certain there are other threads going on where you can bash “liberals” and actually be topical. Not to mention that your statement about how all the women were posting hatred towards the Chinese women seemed to imply that you did care. Of course, you were in error so maybe it was a delusion.

What in God’s name does your evil rant about Obama, etc. have to do with the issue in this thread? Please, Jim, you need to leave this website alone. Your uncivil, insulting comments demonstrate a rage that is truly disturbing. You need to stop. No sense of common decency is evident by your comments, nor do they even make any coherent sense. I know that staff on this website have suggested you move on. Please take their advice.

I certainly wouldn’t like to live in a place where the government told me what to do and especially whether or not I could have more kids. But…..I can understand why the government took the position. China’s population is tremendous and overcrowding is prevalent. There are so many Americans who want children and can’t have them for various reasons. I love the idea of lots of young Chinese children who can be adopted by caring Americans. This is giving them a fighting chance to live the American Dream.

From what I understand this law was put into effect during a famine. I don’t usually defend a communist government but what were they to do. If you examine the number the possible effect of China to continue as it was the future looked hopeless. Then there are the unexpected consequences. Traditions in Chinese families say the sons take care of the parents, girls go with their husbands families and are not available for the care of their parents. That explains what happened going forward.I’m pretty sure the officials who started this had no idea what the outcome would be. I have two friends who emigrated here about 20-25 years ago. They were college professors in China and he was able to find a position here since he taught Literature she didn’t because she taught English. Through them I also met many Chinese citizens as they visited through the years. I met one young lady who had two little boys. She said she had to pay fines for having more than one child. I would guess maybe from the way my friend reacted to the discussion that maybe she had a parent in a position of power. All said with raised eyebrows not words. My friends in their 70’s have siblings, their children in their 40’s don’t, just second cousins, the next generation the grandchildren basically have no family left, just 4th or 5th cousins. I’m not sure what the powers in China are going to do, but I think even they know they have to do something, even if just to stop something new that has happened. Little prince’s who think they are the center of the world they know. So a whole new set of problems. This isn’t about civil rights, this is about the population controls and starvation.

ps, I used to tease Diane [Chinese] that someday all those Chinese girls who have been adopted would become educated here and would go back to their homeland and take over. She used to just look at me and shake her head and laugh.
