Comedian Wanda Sykes Comes Out Swinging Against Prop 8, Declares She's Married to a Woman

We took a huge leap forward and then got dragged twelve feet back’ says the co-star of The New Adventures of Old Christine

The passages of Proposition 8, (which put an end to gay marriages in California) has got TV’s feisty funny lady steamed.

Comedian Wanda Sykes says the passage of a same-sex marriage ban in California has led to her be more outspoken about being gay. She told a stunned gay rights crowd of about a 1,000 in Las Vegas, "I don’t really talk about my sexual orientation. I didn’t feel like I had to. I was just living my life, not necessarily in the closet, but I was living my life," Relaying how happy she was that Obama had clenched the presidency, Sykes said that she felt "attacked" by the passage of Prop 8. She told the crowd, “We took a huge leap forward and then got dragged twelve feet back. I felt like I was being attacked, personally attacked — our community was attacked…Now, I gotta get in their face," she said. "I ‘m proud to be a woman. I’m proud to be a black woman, and I’m proud to be gay."

Divorced from her husband in 1998, Sykes legally married her "wife" in California on October 25th.  The passage of Proposition 8, spurred her decision to officially come out.  Sykes, co-star of "The New Adventures of Old Christine," and was a featured player on Larry Sanders, "Curb Your Enthusiasm, is one of the few out actresses currently playing a leading or supporting role on primetime network television.  She concluded, "They pissed off the wrong group of people.  They have galvanized a community. We are so together now and we all want the same thing and we shouldn’t have to settle for less. Instead of having gay marriage in California, no, we’re gonna have gay marriage across the country!"

Wanda It is great that you came out and spoke, but now you need to speak to the African American community and convince them that gay marriage is a right. The increase in turnout by the AfAm community to support Barack Obama for president, is what passed Prop 8. AfAm churchgoers are the ones that you need to convince, otherwise you would have had it. Yes, I know the LDSers and the Catholics ran the ads, but the AfAm voter, as demonstrated by regional voting, passed it. Take your message to the AfAm churches and start to change some minds. Lord knows I worked to convince people, and I am straight.

Wanda Sykes is in my opinion the one who has taken on George Carlin’s position. She uses humor to get very serious points across and I adore her. She’s beautiful in every way and one of the funniest people alive. her honesty and willingness to stand up is going to be a galvanizing event. I am with you, Wanda.

I’m with you Wanda and I don’t think what happened in CA galvanized only the gay community, I think it galvanized all people who believe in equality and fairness in this country. The religious right has overplayed its hand with this.

Wanda, Keep on talking and get everyone else to lend their voice. This is the time for change. Positive change with equal rights for all. The Dream is alive and well and your voice will help usher it in. Bless you and all those working to make equal rights for all people not just this group of people or that group of people. Bravo!!!… and Prop8, I will be glad to see you get shot down by the Cali Supreme Court.

If Wanda Sykes was legally married in California, why does this article by WowOwow refer to her wife in quotations as “wife.” It’s her wife. Not her “wife.”

I watched the video too. She called her her wife in the audience. She could have said “my husband” what’s the big deal….

Edie, my point was the fact that quotation marks were put around wife in the Wow article. Quotation marks are usually used when someone is common law. But since Sykes is legally married I was remarking on the fact that WowOwow used quotation marks like it was not a bona-fide marriage. It was nitpicking. But I noticed it.

Yah, it hit me wrong too. What flashed through my mind in that moment was the quotes were the editor’s uncertainty about the word wife being acceptable or not. Could have just used the word spouse

Whoa, looked what just popped into my mailbox. Looks like the hate mongers will be paying the piper. Apparently one cannot mess with Gay America anymore. http://www.variety.com/index.asp?layout=festivals&jump=story&id=2470&art…

People I know are still upset about the designation of husband and wife being the only acceptable marriage and can’t understand why gay people can’t accept a legal partnership. When I point out that religious weddings are not in question but civil marriages only, they are usually surprised. Maybe if the gays point this out more often, there would be less objection to the marriages. People do have selective hearing and just saying equal rights all the time isn’t enough. Point out what isn’t going to change (like teaching children about same sex marriages) in schools would be much more effective.
