In today’s column Tom Friedman quotes Shekhar Gupta, editor of The Indian Express saying (tongue in cheek, he says) "All you need to do is grant visas to 2 million Indians, Chinese, and Koreans. We will buy up all the subprime homes. We will work 18 hours a day to pay for them. We will immediately improve your savings rate - no Indian bank today has more than 2% non-performing loans because not paying your mortgage is considered shameful here. And we will start new companies to create our own jobs and jobs for more Americans."

My husband, an online Nepalese journalist, has been saying this for months. Just allow the undocumented Nepalese and others who are already here, working 7 days a week, living in the shadows and saving their money, to receive green cards and one day achieve the citizenship they dream of. They have been saving, and long to own homes. They are entrepreneurial, they work hard, husbands, wives, aunts, uncles, cousins together. They make sure their children are educated and disciplined. They exemplify "family values." I know - my social network is largely in the Nepali community, where I am called "Didi" (sister), and showered with warmth and affection.

Immigration has been a large part of the core of this nation, yet in this bailout congress is stupidly disallowing the employment of high-skilled H1Bvisa holders by the bailed-out. To quote Friedman again:" We need to attack this financial crisis with green cards, not just greenbacks, and with start-ups not just bailouts."

What we ARE doing is swooping up immigrants in raids, separating families, locking people up in detention centers then deporting them after months or years of imprisonment. Who do you think pays for all this? Well over $100/day per detainee, flights to all parts of the world accompanied by 2 officers per deportee (except for those who die while in custody from lack of proper treatment or suicide) and overnight hotels for the accompanying officers all paid for by our tax money.

"The good news is that today inflation is practically nonexistent. Oil prices have collapsed, and other commodities have retrenched as well. That could change, especially as the government ramps up spending and the money supply continues to expand. However, since utilization rates in the economy are low and there are millions looking for jobs, prices and wage rates will likely stay under pressure, containing inflation."

Liz, my dear, I cannot envision inflation staying under wraps as the Treasury prints money for an $800-ish billion stimulus package coupled with the multi-trillion dollar bank bailout.

Back when Mommy learned economics (and dinosaurs roamed the earth), governments that spent their way out of an economic downturn always found themselves in an inflationary environment.

I’ve always steered clear of ‘just sex’ because it’s generally boring and I’ve had better. It’s necessary to have some kind of relationship, whether it’s an old friend or someone you’ve known for a while. During the 60s in Hollywood when everyone was doing it with everyone else, I had enough of that at Hollywood parties. I can remember the last one I went to in Malibu. I came into the party, said hello to the host, an old friend, looked around and went home.
I actually had a lovely young mentor (or I think it was really the other way ‘round) who visited me recently. I had high hopes for a weekend of fun, but it wasn’t to be. First he was wildly allergic to my dog; sneezed and snizzeled the whole time. Then it was decidedly difficult to ‘splain to my Great Dane that her spot on the bed wasn’t to be hers. In fact she didn’t take it well, and made a big fuss all night. The second night I thought, "Well, if she can’t be convinced, she should perhaps join ‘em." Turns out she was way too interested in other things going on than sleeping on her corner of the bed. It ended up in a well packed threesome with a lot of sneezing. I think I’ll have to think it over again.

Diana, I believe the problem here — in this forum — is that it is a blog: anonymous and safe. And I don’t believe WoW, or any other blog, is truly representative of the voices and ideas of the country at large, it is representative of those of us who are of strong opinions and compelled to express ourselves. The so-called blogosphere a small sample, really, and we delude ourselves if we think otherwise or believe we can move mountains with our single opinions. At our best, we’re sharing experiences and tossing ideas back and forth with humor and an open mind. At our worst, we’re people who are in need of a fight or a place to vent our frustrations.

In "real life," I experience far more people interacting civilly, thoughtfully and with a generosity of spirit. We discuss most of the same topics, but we do so with restraint and care. We look each other in the eye, smile, tear-up, and touch.

On a blog, our humanity is reduced to words. There are plenty of very smart women here on WoW, but I also sense a high degree of personal disenfranchisement and social disconnection. So it’s good to be able to reach out to others like we do here — but I think we often forget how fortunate we are to be able to do so and take each other for granted.

(OK, Sully, help me land this plane.) What I’m trying to offer, is the idea that the people of this country are really not so different in the big picture. But on a blog or the mass media or in congress, commonality is not going to distinguish anyone, and so will never be adequately celebrated and leveraged for good. Diana, take hope in what you experience as you bump into each other on the sidewalk, stand next to each other in a line, or find in a smile from a stranger. We are together in so many ways, but politics is and always has been the great divider and on a blog — where we are literally on the same page — it’s a 24/7 experience that’s stoking the problem rather than bringing consensus. Our forbears would be hamstrung by this, I’m sure.

I wish we could put away the negativity, but it’ll never happen on Wow. Still, I’d like to think we could all try harder.

Thanks for the link………it was good to hear again.  I’ll bet they are disappointed at this point in their venture.

Bravo, Susan B! The tone and tenor of the discussions at Wow seems to have deteriorated and been driven away from what I perceived as the original concept for this site. I have learned much from the bright and articulate women who have shared their thoughts, logic, and convictions with their fellow bloggers. I DO NOT need to agree with someone in order to appreciate that s/he has been generous enough to help me see another point of view. These days the threads are polluted with snark woven in between the thoughtful commentary like a creeping malignancy. The toxic pointless “flayming” can attract others who delight in throwing rude insults into the mix and the discourse is replaced with a nasty petty little excrement-fest. I have read about “trolls” and am aware that they actually count the responses they are able to provoke. This tally is a means to gratify themselves, it makes them feel “popular.” I regret that I have responded when I should have ignored. Earlier today I learned that others with whom I blog have reached their level of tolerance with the deterioration of the conversation here at Wow. I am fortunate to be able to hear their commentary elsewhere, but the Wow community is now denied their voices. I continue to hope the founders of this site will find some way to discourage the degradation of your content. It is not about free speech, it is about common decency. Here is a quote on this subject from Mark Morford (thanks to the garden!) that contains some food for thought: “It’s about being seen, about out-snarking the previous poster, about trying to top one another in the quest for… I’m not sure what. A tiny shot of notoriety? The feeling of being “published” on a major media site? Or is it the thrill that can only come from hurling a verbal Molotov at the Great Satan of “corporate media,” and then running away like a snorting 8-year-old? All of the above?” The entire column, “Death by Moron” can be found here: http://www.sfgate.com/columnists/morford/ If the coffee shop I patronize became filled with loud vulgar cretins, pushing and shoving and insulting everyone in earshot, I would take my business elsewhere. Perhaps the owner would not care who bought those lattes (provided those revenue-generating clicks?) but the quality of the establishment would be nonetheless degraded. I SO wish we would hear from the Wow founders on this subject. Are any of you amazing ladies aware of, or offended by, the way your site is being (ab)used?

I am joining my peers here in applauding Susan’s message. I have written about my disillusionment with the quality of exchanges on wOw in the past few months, and I am so pleased to read Susan’s expression of concern about the negativity we encounter. Loss of civility is often symptomatic of the downfall of a societal group. Hopefully, that won’t happen to wOw, but I am urging you founders to take another look at your goals for this website (are they solely marketing? are they merely large numbers of hits?) and then decide if you want intelligent discourse and healthy, spirited exchanges of opinion. I think wOw has reached its tipping point. Bravo, Susan, for helping us to remember that civility does exist in the world beyond wOw, and that people who disagree can do so politely.

Lily, Amazing that you of all people want to be out. I have thought of that many times this week. And I am not happy that there are 2 people who are Dems also playing at this vile game. I like Diana have been accused of being a traitor and was never offered an apology. Wow didn’t even delete that comment which in my opinion is just as offensive as a personal slur.

Maurine- I’m just now catching up on this thread. I wrote above in response to Diane. I’m not sure what to think right now about wow. I haven’t been around these waters much lately. I will always show up when Jane and Lily come out to play. Hope to always meet you there or in the garden. Love you!

I hope the Duchess of Delete will remove the comment made by K. Green. As for the tone in conversation at WOW during the past couple of months; has it really changed? Or are there more folks on the Right posting here and giving back what has been dished out to us Republicans and Independence since the inception of WOW? I think it is the latter. Those horrendous posts by Suzanne and Frank and DB during the campaign were splendid examples of how people like to write about their hate. How many cruel comments were levied at John or Sarah or even Hillary for that matter? The numbers are untold and yet many have stayed to keep the discussions somewhat equal and to offer astute observations. Soon the reaction started and hateful comments about then candidate Obama started. Why? Because the Obama supporters were tearing up these discussions with their intrusions of nothing but hateful remarks about John McCain. Read some of Frank’s posts and you will see. Read what Suzanne wrote not only about Sarah but what she wrote about me, Marjorie, Lady Gator and others. None of her remarks were deleted to the best of my knowledge. This website might be doomed because it sure is not non-partisan as it was touted to be when I first heard about it via The Charlie Rose Show. Peggy Noonan is not an active member and her status as one of the founders may be accurate but she does not offer any articles for the website. Those who do, lean to the Left. There is nothing wrong with leaning Left but there should have been more honesty up front about the website. It is a Left-leaning website and those on the Right are not prohibited or actively discouraged from participating. However, as Maurine confided to me in a comment earlier this week, many women have drifted away from WOW. Mugsy Peabody of whom I highly respect but have probably only 5% of shared political beliefs is one of those. I believe other participants who also supported Hillary have left. My Alias is still here and writes frequently. New posters are more direct and they respond to attacks different than did I. They hit back. Frank is no longer able to attack other bloggers without being attacked in return. Same with Suzanne. Others who are part of the Frank, Suzanne, Diane etc group are no longer able to blog about their hate as freely. I see the difference in the Website. It is more coarse. Is that for the better or will the founders try to change the website now that more folks on the Right on logging on? I wonder.

Well said Bonnie. I believe you are correct, none of Suzanne’s comments were ever deleted and she has contributed some of the most vile of remarks here. As I recall, most of the commentors who are complaining about the current lack of civility, never complained about Suzanne, in fact, some supported and cheered her on. Many of these same folks actively participated in the very behaviors that they now condemn. It just seems a little hypocritical to me.

I did , Eleanor, but I do not fit into the demographic that the CEO of WOW acknowledges. I’ve been warned by the Duchess of Delete, I’ve queried the CEO and others about various situations, but I’ve not received answers. Some truly disgusting posts have been ignored even when brought directly to WOW’s attention. The Founders can encourage us to just leave if we do not like the climate, but the truth is, I believe, we each hold out the hope that this site will rise to the maturity and sense of shared responsibility that we know our country needs at this time. Patience is not the issue. Equality is. It would appear that some of the Founders are entertained by the snarky remarks of some posters. Perhaps those are the sacrifices one makes to be a sophisticated lady in these times. Where’s Duke Ellington when you need him? Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn. Peace and grace

Eleanor, as usual, your facts are cut to fit your argument. Suzanne was bounced from the website more than once.

Mugsy - I made the comment initially regarding Suzanne’s personal remarks not being deleted; not Eleanor. How do you know when someone has been bounced? Anyway, just keeping the record straight. I made a comment earlier about you no longer positing at WOW and suddenly here you are. My mistake, again. Do you have an opinion about this discussion?

Hey, Bonnie. I haven’t been on much because I’m not really interested in giving people who don’t know what they are talking about and spend their time being contentious for its own sake (certainly not you, dearheart) any crawl space in my head. Suzanne and I were among the people who build this website for these guys (you included), and in the early days, we didn’t have the wingnuts. There was one nasty who hated women, but we dispensed with him. Now there are those who disrupt every discussion and are uninteresting, uninformed, and with whom I wouldn’t spend 5 minutes of my brick-and-mortar time, so I’m getting nothing from association with them. As I told Joni earlier, it is her problem to work out, and she seems to think magically they will start acting nice because of the pressures of community. What she doesn’t realize is that they are here to disrupt the community, just as the Republican Senators are determined to undermine President Obama no matter what.
