In today’s column Tom Friedman quotes Shekhar Gupta, editor of The Indian Express saying (tongue in cheek, he says) "All you need to do is grant visas to 2 million Indians, Chinese, and Koreans. We will buy up all the subprime homes. We will work 18 hours a day to pay for them. We will immediately improve your savings rate - no Indian bank today has more than 2% non-performing loans because not paying your mortgage is considered shameful here. And we will start new companies to create our own jobs and jobs for more Americans."

My husband, an online Nepalese journalist, has been saying this for months. Just allow the undocumented Nepalese and others who are already here, working 7 days a week, living in the shadows and saving their money, to receive green cards and one day achieve the citizenship they dream of. They have been saving, and long to own homes. They are entrepreneurial, they work hard, husbands, wives, aunts, uncles, cousins together. They make sure their children are educated and disciplined. They exemplify "family values." I know - my social network is largely in the Nepali community, where I am called "Didi" (sister), and showered with warmth and affection.

Immigration has been a large part of the core of this nation, yet in this bailout congress is stupidly disallowing the employment of high-skilled H1Bvisa holders by the bailed-out. To quote Friedman again:" We need to attack this financial crisis with green cards, not just greenbacks, and with start-ups not just bailouts."

What we ARE doing is swooping up immigrants in raids, separating families, locking people up in detention centers then deporting them after months or years of imprisonment. Who do you think pays for all this? Well over $100/day per detainee, flights to all parts of the world accompanied by 2 officers per deportee (except for those who die while in custody from lack of proper treatment or suicide) and overnight hotels for the accompanying officers all paid for by our tax money.

"The good news is that today inflation is practically nonexistent. Oil prices have collapsed, and other commodities have retrenched as well. That could change, especially as the government ramps up spending and the money supply continues to expand. However, since utilization rates in the economy are low and there are millions looking for jobs, prices and wage rates will likely stay under pressure, containing inflation."

Liz, my dear, I cannot envision inflation staying under wraps as the Treasury prints money for an $800-ish billion stimulus package coupled with the multi-trillion dollar bank bailout.

Back when Mommy learned economics (and dinosaurs roamed the earth), governments that spent their way out of an economic downturn always found themselves in an inflationary environment.

I’ve always steered clear of ‘just sex’ because it’s generally boring and I’ve had better. It’s necessary to have some kind of relationship, whether it’s an old friend or someone you’ve known for a while. During the 60s in Hollywood when everyone was doing it with everyone else, I had enough of that at Hollywood parties. I can remember the last one I went to in Malibu. I came into the party, said hello to the host, an old friend, looked around and went home.
I actually had a lovely young mentor (or I think it was really the other way ‘round) who visited me recently. I had high hopes for a weekend of fun, but it wasn’t to be. First he was wildly allergic to my dog; sneezed and snizzeled the whole time. Then it was decidedly difficult to ‘splain to my Great Dane that her spot on the bed wasn’t to be hers. In fact she didn’t take it well, and made a big fuss all night. The second night I thought, "Well, if she can’t be convinced, she should perhaps join ‘em." Turns out she was way too interested in other things going on than sleeping on her corner of the bed. It ended up in a well packed threesome with a lot of sneezing. I think I’ll have to think it over again.

Comment to a Post on February 6 (Sorry we missed this comment last week but it’s still worth recognizing)
By Susan B on 02/06/2009 3:46 pm

Diana, I believe the problem here — in this forum — is that it is a blog: anonymous and safe. And I don’t believe WoW, or any other blog, is truly representative of the voices and ideas of the country at large, it is representative of those of us who are of strong opinions and compelled to express ourselves. The so-called blogosphere a small sample, really, and we delude ourselves if we think otherwise or believe we can move mountains with our single opinions. At our best, we’re sharing experiences and tossing ideas back and forth with humor and an open mind. At our worst, we’re people who are in need of a fight or a place to vent our frustrations.

In "real life," I experience far more people interacting civilly, thoughtfully and with a generosity of spirit. We discuss most of the same topics, but we do so with restraint and care. We look each other in the eye, smile, tear-up, and touch.

On a blog, our humanity is reduced to words. There are plenty of very smart women here on WoW, but I also sense a high degree of personal disenfranchisement and social disconnection. So it’s good to be able to reach out to others like we do here — but I think we often forget how fortunate we are to be able to do so and take each other for granted.

(OK, Sully, help me land this plane.) What I’m trying to offer, is the idea that the people of this country are really not so different in the big picture. But on a blog or the mass media or in congress, commonality is not going to distinguish anyone, and so will never be adequately celebrated and leveraged for good. Diana, take hope in what you experience as you bump into each other on the sidewalk, stand next to each other in a line, or find in a smile from a stranger. We are together in so many ways, but politics is and always has been the great divider and on a blog — where we are literally on the same page — it’s a 24/7 experience that’s stoking the problem rather than bringing consensus. Our forbears would be hamstrung by this, I’m sure.

I wish we could put away the negativity, but it’ll never happen on Wow. Still, I’d like to think we could all try harder.

Elaine - I did send an inquiry to WOW about the deletion.  Thanks.  I have never made an official complaint about another blogger ….only to the blogger herself or himself….but maybe we should all police the website.  Satire and sarcasm are acceptable right?  Because I use both a lot.

Dear BO…The thought police are policing the website…..("I reported her….") Sarcasm and satire better stay acceptable….what about humor? What about pigtail tweaking?

Georgia -

I absolutely love the witty comments and especially a remark that is turned from a negative into a positive…. sort of like your last line.  I also enjoy the quick repartee that occasionally occurs.

There are intelligent women and now that more intelligent men have joined our little group…..if we cannot tweak their pigtails then maybe we can surely think of something else to tweak…..keeping it clean here….how about their egos.

Lily If you don’t want to read what you consider inflammatory articles, or those that might attract trolls, then don’t read them. There are dozens of articles each week to choose from. Many of us do not participate on certain threads that we might find objectionable for any number of reasons. The site progresses at the level of the participants, it is not perfect, nor will it ever be perfect. It is a cross section of the thinking in our world, there is no avoiding that unless we outlaw freedom of speech, which, as of yet, has not happened in the US. Individual awareness does not evolve without testing it with new ideas. Although someone’s ideas may seem to express a lack of awareness, if they don’t come here, they might not learn other ideas. We never know if there is a post that may change someone’s outlook on issues of today. One thing that seems to be true, is that if people are always fighting what they perceive as evil, it only seems to make the evil stronger in their eyes. They just get more angry with every post and is doesn’t solve anything.

Joni - Thank you for your post. First of all, let me say that the WOW website does a splendid job of directing participants to the threads they wish to read. All of the updates you have provided are very much appreciated. We all enjoy the ability to review our comments before posting (though I should do that more frequently because of typos or left out words) or the fact that we can click onto our avatar and see all our previous posts…and from that point we can rejoin previous discussions. The WOW website is first-rate in its design and ease of use. I’ve not seen anything better on the Net. As for the discussions, the political discussions, it has been difficult. In all other threads, for the most part, we all meet and exchange thoughts, experiences or observations. We are truly becoming the envision that you write as your hopes for the website. It is only in the political discussions, that its gets out of hand. For those of us who grew up with politics as a staple at the dinner table, some of the intensity does not preclude us from participating in the discussion. Others here have expressed their alarm. However, I think the alarm and concern is shared by most of us when the debate becomes too vitriolic. It is like an acid that runs over the pages of a discussion destroying everything that was previously written. I hope that changes. I especially like this comment section where I now feel that we posters can make a comment or two unrelated to anything previously discussed during the week or we can continue the conversation of a comment selected to be highlighted for the week…..like this one. Thank you again.

What I love about WOW, is the vast genre of subjects available. I scan and then if I am interested, I read the topic of discussion. It is incredible the amount of diverse women that have been brought together, connected but very much of thier own substance and thoughts. If there is another place on the web with such a collective interested group interacting hands on, I have not seen it before. Thank you for WOW!

Please delete me and my 2191 comments from this site. And Joni, you can’t make “subjective” decisions based on your own 10 commandments. If someone is labeled “traitor” that is not only a personal insult, but under US laws a crime against our nation. Seems like a slanderous or in this case libelous (always get those mixed up) comment to make. Even if you want to label it “insightful”. Frank, You have also been a BIG part of this egging them on constantly. Alex, My comment on this thread was not directed at you. However, one can be against Gay marriage w/o having to bash Gays. Eleanor, Suzanne has been deleted and thrown off this site. And one only needs to go back to many of your posts to see what hate truly looks like. SJ Morgan, Education is not an “EXPENSE”, it is an investment in our future and our kids deserve better conditions that to sit in a school that is falling apart. Fixing them is only throwing more good money down the drain. Frannie, I know we have had our own problems lately, but just wanted to thank you for replying to Alex. I thought this thread was supposed to be about civility, but Joni’s comment gave him permission to continue to be “insightful” Joni. I still think it’s all about the bottom line with you. I just want to know if each and every single founder agrees with your reasons for not hitting delete when it does cross the line of your own terms of use. I just read on Facebook that someone named Susan B………. (am not sure if that’s the same Susan who wrote the comment of the week, deleted WoW from her bookmark and turned off all her replies. But if it is, that would be something. I hope Marlo and Liza Donnelly get to read my comments to them before I am deleted.

Carol— “Eleanor, Suzanne has been deleted and thrown off this site. And one only needs to go back to many of your posts to see what hate truly looks like.” —-Not when she was attacking me. I did not come on this site for quite a long time because of you and your friends. If Suzanne got “booted”, she must have said something really offensive because the things she wrote to me were far, far worse than being called a “traitor” which seems to be your “subjective” evaluation of what is offensive. As to whether or not my comments are “what hate truly looks like”, one need only look at what or who I was responding to understand the true meaning of “what hate truly looks like”. You and your friends are hypocrits. I am not the one complaining about the level of civility here, you and your friends are. I don’t happen to think I am omnipotent enough to tell a website how they should conduct their business. I knew what I was getting into and accepted the conditions. You are all immature and need to realize that the world does not conform around what you want it to be.

I recall trying to have a civil discourse with you last spring, and was brutally attacked by you. I have not had any conversations with you since. I do agree that Suzanne needed to get deleted more than once and like you I have been a target of her attacks. But she has more than 9 lives and comes back as a different entity even though it goes against the terms of agreement. Why did it take so long for Jim Henley to get booted from this site? He said the same vile things over and over again. Traitor is only one part of all this. But for you to come across as an innocent by-stander is totally false. Of course you are not complaining about the level of civility. Civility has never been your style.
By Brooklyn Gal on 02/15/2009 11:45 am
eleanor roche
Well, I guess if you consider that the fact that I disagreed with you on an issue to be a “brutal attack”, then I think you need to assess your sensitivities. As I recall, you were dictating to me which “conservative” authors are acceptable—I disagreed with your point. Sorry, if you find that offensive, but I hardly think you expect everyone to agree with you, do you? But to call that a “brutal attack” is just silly. Quite frankly, I don’t even think you were trying to have a “civil discourse” with me—I interpreted it otherwise—I actually felt you were rude in that exchange, which is my perogative. Like I said, I am not complaining—you are. As to civility, you pretty much show your hand with your last remark.

Now you are calling an attack “disagreeing”. No, you are not complaining. You are being your own sweet lovable self. I remember telling you that AC was not “civil” and there were many other Conservative authors that were and should be included at WoW also. You went ballistic. I wouldn’t call that mature discourse. Even other commenters told you I was not being rude. You didn’t seem to care.
By Brooklyn Gal on 02/15/2009 12:38 pm

Since you insist on mischaracterizing our “conversation” on the Coulter thread, I went back and looked at the exchange. Seems it was precipitated by YOU calling all of us “right wingers” bigots if we agreed with Coulter. Then, you supplied me with who you thought were other acceptable “role models” for me. If anyone should be insulted, it should be me. To call telling you “I am not in need of someone choosing my role models” a “brutal attack”, is just preposterous. Given your rude and condescending remarks, I was extremely respectful—I hardly went “ballistic”. But some of your comments on that thread were very offensive. Quite honestly, your remarks about Coulter, “right wingers” and conservatives were very inflammatory. And your right, telling a grown woman who she should or shouldn’t respect with regard to political discussion is not mature. Maybe you should evaluate your own language before you label others.
