Confessions of a Couch Potato

Zoe Buckman

I admit it: when it comes to my remote control, I have no control. I am hopelessly addicted to the enigmatic "Brain Wave State" induced by pushing the remote power button and seeing the first image flash on. When my housekeeper has put the remote somewhere — like in the laundry — and I can’t find it, I panic just like a junkie desperate for a fix.

As time goes on, it seems I care less and less what the image is. It’s the act of watching, itself, that seems to be the endorphin releaser. I used to be so selective, so discerning about what I watched — not anymore.

I just want — need to be on the couch, watching — whatever. In fact, I almost always dial switch, in and out and round about, a special kind of addiction in and of itself. I am on the couch, but I might as well be on crack. I have this craving for TV — not for any particular shows, as I said, but for the experience of TV itself.

Along with the good feelings of escapism, this craving and the giving into it makes me feel guilty, so I almost always have a book in my lap, reading and watching TV contrapuntally — be forewarned, this also can become addictive.

Reading a book expiates the guilt of so much TV watching and I think some kind of endorphins get released from the expiation of all that guilt. This gets very tricky, but I guess I brought all this up because I’m worried that I would rather stay home and do what I’ve just described than go out to the theatre or concerts or you name it.

As you’re reading this, maybe it sounds like my life is empty, but, it’s not.

Why is it when you read a lot of books, you’re considered well-read; however, when you watch a lot of TV, you’re not well-viewed?

My life seems fulfilling — enriching even — not nearly as empty as it seems anyway. Of course, that’s helped by the fact that I have a wonderful partner who, luckily, I guess you could say, has the same addiction as I do. In fact, I think of us sometimes as the Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown of TV addiction. They kicked crack after kicking each other around a bit; however, we don’t want to kick our habit — and you have to really want to or it won’t work.

I recall that book, Amusing Ourselves to Death — but my partner and I can’t think of a better way of going.

TV I could take or leave; but I am definitely addicted to the computer. There’s always some new piece of information that I simply must investigate!

Sounds like a very busy and creative woman to me! Of course, that may be my own justification for doing exactly the same. The guilt got so great at one point, in fact, that I resolved to work while watching. Now I have created this insane habit of working on my laptop at the same time as attempting to watch whatever happens to be on (and, yes, the television is on now). I rarely ever sit just to sit, just to watch, just to relax. The times that I do sit down without the work in hand to enjoy a movie or show, I find that after about one half hour (if my multi-tasking brain can be still that long) I start jumping up to accomplish something else every few minutes. Maybe this makes me feel like I am accomplishing something. This only leads to another question, when did I decide that I must “accomplish” some task at all waking times? Enough goofing off… back to work for me!

I have a remote that is so complicated I’m the only one who can use it. It’s the ultimate form of remote “control” and it is very much an addition to gadgets and control….and of course it allows me to watch anything whether good, bad or boring on my TV. Bless electronics and all the oddly useless programs that we get addicted to watching day in and day out.

On the coach anyone can find me. I am a little rounder than I wish because it. But the reason I became a couch potato is because of family. Working all day in the house. I used to be a business woman in the world. I would not go backiof finance permitted it. Then two minutes later I find my business side pop out and say get busy. Mostly because my husband or his people have ticked my off. These are the thoughts I struggle with while being on the couch. So then sewing and computer take over my pattern in my life. So because of the couch potatoes my right hand to my right foot hurts from clicking to much. I could go on…..I Am Learning to Breath!

Thank goodness! Now I can lose the guilt when I do “nothing”… but even as I type this the TV is on!

For me it’s the computer also….and the books….and the TV! Like MW C said, there’s always that new piece of information….there’s also that new book…there’s also that new documentary…Why is there anything wrong with wanting to expand your mind? Not all tv is fluff! Not all of the internet is junk! To me wasting time is standing in line somewhere without a book or my smartphone (unthinkable!!), being stuck in traffic without a good talk show on the radio, or a good magazine!

I have been feeling very guilty about the amount of time I have been spending in front of th t.v. as well, often with an unread book in my lap! I have my loop, about eight channels that I flip through, never watching a whole show, just flipping from one to the other. I have been so bothered by this that I have decided to go to the gym instead. For the past 2 weeks I have been running, swimming, lifting weights and I have taken my first spin class. Funny thing, my butt never hurt from hours on my sofa hiowever, 30 minutes of spin class and i may never sit again!!!

I love it: well viewed vs. well read! Nice! TV has become the global hearth. I love all media — television, newspapers, computer… I do multi task when I watch tv — like sit on the floor on my yoga mat and do some stretches…or knit…

I was feeling some self loathing about this very thing yesturday. Glad to know I’m not alone. Just wish there were some better shows to watch.

What a deliciously guilty pleasure to Go Back to HGTV during the commercials to see Rachel’s greatest recipe! I’m supposed to be looking for a job but really, isn’t there something to be gained from watching a clutter couple get a Clean House? I was a LOT more ambitious before I got cable. The biggest selling point was all those educational shows — Riiiggghht. A What Not to Wear marathon trumps The Age of Machiavelli every time. Thank goodness for commercials or I’d never get anything done!

I am “well viewed” and glad that there are others that have similar behaviors. Right now I am on my sofa with my computer on my lap, my Harmony remote control next to me and a rerun of Crossing Jordan on. When I have work to get done I usually have reruns on in the background or reality shows like American Idol or Big Brother (my guilty pleasure). I am amused when I am talking to a friend or family member who thinks that watching tv is a waste of time and then through conversation find they are watching American Idol or the latest Law and Order…they are closet tv watchers, afraid to admit that they sit in front of the tv for a couple of hours a day. So, I am well viewed and not ashamed about it!

I haven’t gotten to the place where I am comfortable with the volume of TV that I watch. I feel like I could find a balance or simply give myself limits. Mine is not daily, but when I watch, I can spend the better part of a day glued to it. TIVO is a blessing and a curse. I also had a career and made the decision to have children later in life and stay home. It has been 10 years and still I struggle with validation. I was programed to believe I was only productive if I made money. This is great food for thought. The web site is a terrific idea.

I have raised my kids; worked for 20 + years, just when I was ready to start “MY LIFE”….I have been afflicted with an inner ear problem that has stopped me in my tracks with constant dizziness and disorientation! It is horrendous! This last 8 months I feel like I haven’t gotten off the couch and for the first time, I have been in charge of the remote control during the day! I am starting to like the remote. I am starting to enjoy being a couch potato! I do wish this dizziness would go away so I could enjoy it without everything spinning! Now is a lovely time to run the remote control, in the day of DVR’s, I can now FF and RW real TV! I can record two shows and watch a third! Awwwww lovely remote…..Finally I have found my real love affair! I am waiting for the day that someone comes up with a way for it to burn more calories…. I also listen to the tv these days when I am on the computer, or cleaning up the house! Like others, I don’t care what is on, the tv just has to be on. I actually turned it off one day, and listened to the quietness of the house; it was unbearable for nearly 10 minutes! I feel like I finally understand what the “fuss” was all about with men’s love affairs with tv over the years! I too have found that if you read a book or make a list while sitting on the couch watching tv it does expiate some of the guilt of watching 16 hours a day! LOL!

TV is on for noise :) it is the internet in which I stay connected. But when it warms up it will be the garden and sitting out on my picnic table enjoying the beauty of the river and nature!
