Confessions of a Couch Potato

Zoe Buckman

I admit it: when it comes to my remote control, I have no control. I am hopelessly addicted to the enigmatic "Brain Wave State" induced by pushing the remote power button and seeing the first image flash on. When my housekeeper has put the remote somewhere — like in the laundry — and I can’t find it, I panic just like a junkie desperate for a fix.

As time goes on, it seems I care less and less what the image is. It’s the act of watching, itself, that seems to be the endorphin releaser. I used to be so selective, so discerning about what I watched — not anymore.

I just want — need to be on the couch, watching — whatever. In fact, I almost always dial switch, in and out and round about, a special kind of addiction in and of itself. I am on the couch, but I might as well be on crack. I have this craving for TV — not for any particular shows, as I said, but for the experience of TV itself.

Along with the good feelings of escapism, this craving and the giving into it makes me feel guilty, so I almost always have a book in my lap, reading and watching TV contrapuntally — be forewarned, this also can become addictive.

Reading a book expiates the guilt of so much TV watching and I think some kind of endorphins get released from the expiation of all that guilt. This gets very tricky, but I guess I brought all this up because I’m worried that I would rather stay home and do what I’ve just described than go out to the theatre or concerts or you name it.

As you’re reading this, maybe it sounds like my life is empty, but, it’s not.

Why is it when you read a lot of books, you’re considered well-read; however, when you watch a lot of TV, you’re not well-viewed?

My life seems fulfilling — enriching even — not nearly as empty as it seems anyway. Of course, that’s helped by the fact that I have a wonderful partner who, luckily, I guess you could say, has the same addiction as I do. In fact, I think of us sometimes as the Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown of TV addiction. They kicked crack after kicking each other around a bit; however, we don’t want to kick our habit — and you have to really want to or it won’t work.

I recall that book, Amusing Ourselves to Death — but my partner and I can’t think of a better way of going.

Hello my name is Laura W. and I am a tvholic! All kidding aside, as a busy career woman with a home to run being “mindless” in front of a tv is my way of meditating or rather zoning out. There should be no guilt, we all need down time. Bring on my HGTV!

A Couch Potato, I am not. Remember The View at 10 o’clock. I wash and scrub and wipe the dust, The news at eleven is a must. The kids are gone, but still much to do, One Life to Live comes on at two. Dr. Phil just gave me some good advice, Wonder if Oprah will be just as nice. Well have to call the furniture store, My couch on one side seems a little lower. Well this is about my busy day, As you can see—no time for play.

Hello! Just joined this wonderful group. Yup, I was watching good morning america. I have three school age kids, and a loving husband. I gave up my corporate life/job to spend more time with the family, and decided to start a business. I design and create personalized bagtags, and beach bags ~ visit my website: www.bagtagsusa.com I too end up on the boob-tube during the day depending on the show I want to watch. I usually watch The View, Lifetime, travel channel, and news during the day. Other than that, I’m constantly on the computer. Love it!! Jacqui, massage business?? hmm.. where are you? sounds interesting.. cheers all - Have a terrific day!

My husband was out of town for two days. I sat in the recliner, had the kids (ages 14 and 16) fix their own meals and zoned in front the the tv for two days. He came home. I gave up the remote and and now making plans for his next out of town trip to claim the remote and not move. I loved it. He asked if this and that got done and I just smiled and said no, just sat in the recliner and watched tv. Wow O Wow

After 40 odd years in the workplace I retired two weeks ago. I have tried valiantly to stay away from that ever present screen. I cleaned out closets, I scrubbed my tub, I read two books, I starting writing one book. But still it beckons, that ever present screen that sits black and mocking in the corner of the living room. Oh well, there is still time for a Law and Order rerun while the clothes dry.

It makes me sad that so many women feel “guily” taking time for themselves. Watching TV, reading, napping, computerizing, exercizing, etc. are all activites that feed our souls. We are entitled to feed ourselves. So, grab the remote. Guilty? No way.

i hear ya…i once swore i wouldnt touch a computer..too complicated, time consuming, etc…wow! i wonder who that person was…so much better than running to the library and spending hours going thru books doing research..i have done my complete family genealogy on the computer and helped several friends do theirs…however, i dont like TV all that much, but love movies with a plot that makes you use brain cells..have been a AVID reader since around the age of 5/6 years old..still my favorite sport…

Since retiring 5 years ago, I find myself loving to watch TV nearly every waking moment, not wanting to go anywhere and not getting any exercise, thus the 30+ extra lbs. My husband loves the computer and spends a lot of time online playing cards. He says we’re retired, and we can do anything we want to do. I love that feeling, but I really feel guilty about the weight gain and not doing much in a constructive manner. Am I being too hard on myself, or do I deserve to do what I wish? Lorna

I am glad to find out I am not the only one that loves the computer, but I also have the TV going, and if something sounds interesting, I will turn my head and look. I do call being on the computer “my hobby” as I learned how to use a digital camera and have a card program that I learned to put those pictures in. What a wonderful way to share your life with friends and family that are far away. I retired in 1995 after 40 years of banking. My husband retired 2 years after and we did have fun traveling. But in 2002 my husband passed away. We had been married for 47 years. So the computer and a digital camera have kept me going. As I have always said about working… I was born to be retired, I just had to work 40 years to get there! Congratulations on this wonderful site. I will visit it often. I will tell you about my weight gain later.

So glad to see that I am not alone in my multi-tasking tv, computer, book additictions! My husband is banned from watching sports on my tv so he has a room and tv of his own for that:) I agree with those who say they are well viewed. With cable there is so much wonderful viewing from Liftime to Discover to History. So much to watch, so little time!

This made me laugh. Just last night I was watching TV and there really wasn’t anything on. Yet I could not turn it off. My daughter came home and asked what I was watching and it was some unknown game show. I couldn’t explain why I was watching it. So glad that I’m not alone. lol

I have this guilty pleasure with the TV - sitcoms…I can’t seem to get enough of them, most of which I watch in reruns…I would rather watch Friends or Will & Grace or 2-1/2 Men than just about anything else on TV…I sometimes wonder if that makes me a dunce…it sure beats any of the reality TV that the networks seem to think we like…
