Cosmo Editrix Helen Gurley Brown Was Giving Young Girls Sex Tips at 75, More Shockers Revealed

Helen Gurley Brown helmed Cosmopolitan for 32 years before being replaced by Bonnie Fuller in 1996. A run like that might lead one to believe that she was beloved in the hallways at publisher Hearst. A new lawsuit suggests that’s not exactly the case.

This morning, items about the now-86-year-old Brown reveal a career characterized by questionable behavior. Despite being a target for at least a decade as circulation slipped, a forthcoming biography of Brown reveals an even darker side to the story. The new tell-all, Bad Girls Go Everywhere, (set to be released in April) dishes on how Brown was forced out over comments on sexual harassment, AIDs and other controversial matters. Author Jennifer Scanlon writes:

In the end, Helen Gurley Brown would prove an exceedingly difficult person to nudge from her coveted but comfortable position, and it took another decade for Hearst executives to force the issue.

According to the publisher’s website, Scanlon followed Brown’s career as a frank and fearless feminist who achieved tremendous commercial success. While her convictions might have pushed a few buttons, according to one former staffer, Brown was "one of the greatest editors in the business." The staffer writes:

Using Cosmopolitan as her medium, Helen gave women the same sexual freedom men had and taught us to enjoy it and make it fun. She has been acknowledged as one of the greatest editors in the business and what she taught us about writing and editing was a gift — someone ought to check out how long her editors stayed with her out of huge love, devotion and awe. Each one of us became a Cosmo girl and I never saw a downside. Unlike sisterhood wars, Helen made us friends, not competitors.

But, in the end, it was probably time for Brown to say good-bye. After all, there’s something really strange about young girls taking tips on "How to Lose Your Virginity" from a 75-year-old. But, then again, older women do know best …

Hard to believe that Helen Gurley Brown is 86! Golly, talk about making me feel old. The youngsters on this site have no idea of the influence she had on us single women in the 70’s…times have changed; we didn’t think she had questionable behavior back then. But, then that was the pre-aids days. Joy of Sex had just been published, birth control pills were very popular, sexual inhibitions were out and Woodstock happened…

I used to see her on talk shows when I was a teenager… and to be honest, she creeped me out. (spoken from my perspective at the time)

At 86! Does she really know what love is?

Debra, what makes you think that old ladies don’t remember or engage in LOVE or even love making? We can remember all the real loves in our lives and the ones who got away too. Loving and being loved is an every day life style, not something that disappears when one arrives as some invisible 80’s wall. I’ve got only 4 years to go, but I’ll be damned if I’m going to forget all that good stuff!

Helen Gurley Brown taught me a lot of what I use today in regard to relating to men, sex, independence and self confidence. Cosmopolitan was my “self help” book, so to speak, long before there were actual self help publications. I stopped reading Cosmo years ago because it morphed into a magazine that strayed too far from it’s original theme of empowering women. 86 years old? God bless her!

Jim, It seems odd to me and funny (in a snarky kind of way) that you seem to think that every time we disagree with another women, it is because we are jealous. We’re not jealous, we just disagree. We are allowed.

She was great in her time, but perhaps at 75 she should have actred more grandmotherly and maybe advised the young girls to wait a bit before they became sexually active. The rate of STDs among teenagers is astonishly high, girls as young as 12 are gving birth in my hosptal. The other night I saw a segment on O’Reilly with these 14yr. olds who wanted to have a baby. We all liked her back in the day, but we weren’t 14 either using her as our mentor.

I wonder, who is this Jim person??? Another venomous male crashing in?? Oh dear, why don’t you keep your little male bruised ego to yourself, we have more entertaining things to do without interference, capito??? or we’ll break your knees (Sopranos dixit!!!!) Re Ms Gurley Brown, she is just great. I never read Cosmopolitan but sometime in the 70’s I bought her book “Having it all” & it was a romp, from beginning to end. I used many of her tricks” (quite successful, by the way….) A strong woman with a sense of humour (and very successful to boot + she married the man of her dreams)is there anything else to add??? Thank you Ms Gurley !!!
