Cuomo Trying to Eliminate Kennedy Competition?

In this series, which started in July ‘08, wowOwow follows the political news swirling around Caroline Kennedy since her surprise endorsement of Barack Obama and high-profile placement on his VP selection committee. Now, Caroline is ready to launch a political career of her own. With the Caroline Kennedy Candidacy Watch, we’ll follow all the latest news.

Andrew Cuomo has been keeping a pretty low profile when it comes to who Gov. David Paterson will pick to fill Hillary Clinton’s Senate seat. But now there’s word that he may just be working behind the scenes to better his chances at being "the chosen one."

The New York Times reports that a top Cuomo aide, Joseph Percoco, is urging labor leaders and officials upstate to not endorse Caroline Kennedy – the attorney general’s top rival in this "non-campaign" – for the job.

A new USA Today/Gallup poll shows that 45 percent of those recently surveyed would like to see Kennedy go to the Senate, while 36 percent would rather see someone else appointed.

An upstate Democratic operative told the Times this about Percoco:

"He said, ‘Don’t you think it should be someone who understands upstate? Don’ you think it should be someone with experience? Shouldn’t it be somebody who knows New York better?’ … They’ve been trying to feed people."

Apparently Cuomo himself advised one New York labor leader to delay warming to, or even meeting with Kennedy, until the selection process gets more down to the wire. Cuomo’s spokesman, of course, is denying any reports of attempts to derail the competition.

To be sure, the longer this drags on, the less popular Kennedy gets.

Jossip says even former "Nanny" Fran Drescher would be better qualified than the Camelot heiress, pointing out that the actress is a born-and-bred New Yorker, cancer survivor, author and non-profit organizer.

"Franny may not have been more qualified than Andrew Cuomo, but she’s definitely as, if not more, qualified than Kennedy. Don’t believe us? Let us count the ways."

Maureen Dowd wrote a column on this subject. Some of the comments are reminding her about her anti-Clinton stance when she ran for Senate. New Yorkers turned down Cuomo for governor. We know his temperament and getting labor to back him is something I suspect he would do and may get. It would be nice if our home-town media would also interview others vying for this job.

Cuomo doesn’t have the money of the Kennedy. Paterson who was not elected, needs Caroline’s money and relationships. There are big chances for her to be selected! That would be a real catastrophy for NY, and i really hope it doesn’t happen!

When Andrew Cumo reads Maureen Dowd’s piece “Sweet on Caroline,” he will know that he has to give it up.

Here is the Dowd piece (Diana posted this on another thread), it’s spot on and I wish everyone would read it and then take a deep breath and stop the yelling and the trashing of people, people like Caroline Kennedy who are willing to go into public service NOT for selfish reasons, but because they think they can contribute to our society. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/07/opinion/07dowd.html?_r=1

Caroline Kennedy really strikes fear in the heart of the neo-cons. I am rooting for her all the way.

Actually she does not. From what most have seen,,,go ahead and appoint her. In two years the seat may go to a Republican if she tanks!

Merrell g - “…but what is really the story here?” I think some backlash may be occurring against Caroline as a result of the rather harsh and, to many of us, unfair treatment meted out to Sarah Palin. Cries against Sarah’s qualifications and her style of speech have left many of us wondering about the hypocrisy displayed by some posters in light of the endorsement of never-been-elected-to-office Caroline who botched her maiden political speech with a bunch of “you knows”. Where is the fairness? However, much of the “sinister slant”, as you write, is probably coming from Hillary supporters who are feeling just a teeny tiny bit of betrayal against the Kennedys. I don’t think of these objections as “sinister”. However, I am very glad that Jeb Bush ….who was almost a shoo-in if he decided to run for a senatorial seat from Florida … has decided not to run. I believe that the advantage of coming from a known political family no longer carries the automatic favorable impact as it once did in past years or past centuries …in the eras of Adams, Roosevelt or even Kennedy.

My choice has been Andrew Cuomo from the beginning for all the reasons that Caroline Kennedy was not a good choice.
