By wowOwow Member Belinda

The Daily Deed, the wOw Community Forum for Personal Advocacy, is where readers can share ideas for practical, personal acts of kindness that can not only help individual victims of the economic slump … but also begin a women-led movement that can transform our society into a more human, humane, positive place for all.  As your ideas come in, we’ll pull a several forward into inspirational individual posts such as this one …

What I will be doing as of January is offering my writing talents to people in my area for free in regard to resume preparation. I will be formatting, printing and in some instances, mailing out resumes for job hunters in need free of charge. As a Human Resources Director I have seen my share of really bad resumes. Many that lost their opportunity to be considered seriously because their resumes were abysmal. And from what I hear from my associates who also work in H.R., they are seeing the same in their offices. You can’t sell yourself for a new job if the hiring agent can’t get past your resume. So my hope is to help as many people in need as possible, hundreds if not thousands.

I’m also going to assist in job interview training for those who have not had to interview for a job in decades. Times have changed and many simply don’t know what they are in store for when it comes to having an interview. Many lack computer skills and the proper communication skills required to succeed in an interview. It’s small I know, but I hope to make some difference.

Belinda, that is such a great idea. My daughter used to work at company that was a temporary legal services company - getting jobs for attorneys and legal aids. One of her duties was going over the resumes and she said that it was amazing how poorly done they were. And the computer programs that should help - checking spelling and so on - often made it worse, the wrong word, as long as it was spelled correctly, would fit right in there. Good luck and Happy New Year.

Belinda, congrats are in order. What a wonderful and innovative idea. You also ought to offer advice as to how to maintain an absolutely Flawless complexion. Other than picking the right parents, how do you do it?

Thanks for the compliment Diana, I wish I could say it was due to DNA, but it’s not. I owe it all to a little jar of Dermablend. :-)

Belinda—I can only imagine how difficult a job in human resources must be on a daily basis. What kind of “mistake” do you see most often on a resume? I know a person who lied and got away with it, eventually hired. This person claimed to have his masters degree, when he had barely made it out of high school. It made me angry because I put so much time and effort into my schooling, but he just made his up, and it showed in his work product. I understand resumes are being background checked more now than they were, say 10 years ago. Do people still get away with outright lies?

Kermie, Background checks in terms of employment have now become an actual business. Companies, countless of them that do nothing more than investigate potential employees. People always embellish on their resumes and always have. I believe when it comes to writing a resume, if you use your smarts and can articulate your thoughts, you don’t have to lie. I have rewritten resumes for people who only have one job under their belts, but you would have thought they worked as CEO’s based on the manner in which I formatted and wrote their resume. You are so right though, you can’t embellish (or outright lie) in today’s job market, you will be caught. And if you are, you go into the black hole of applicants never to be considered again. And the last thing you want to do is be black-listed from a good company. The biggest resume flaws I have seen are grammar and spelling. Simply sloppy resumes. Goodness knows I’m not perfect (you read my posts riddled with spelling and grammatical mistakes) but when you’re presenting a resume it is worth the extra time and effort to check for mistakes. It’s your first impression, and we all know first impressions are lasting. I already have some women lined up for this service and I have barely started promoting my service in my area. That tells me a lot of people are going to need me, and that makes me happy.

What you are doing is a beautiful deed Belinda. You are your own reward and a blessing to others. May the light you bring to others be passed on again in turn. Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. May your world be full of love, light and peace in the new year. E

Belinda, Kudos on a great idea and your willingness to follow through. While you’re coaching job seekers, you might also give them some tips on appropriate attire and grooming for a job search. Best of luck to you and all your “clients!”

Hey Belinda! This is NO small thing! So many job hunters suffer from a badly written resume. At a time when job hunting will escalate, your service offer is altruistic. Thank you on behalf of the world :^) You see that you have put the slogan “Think Globally, Act Locally” into play, don’t you? How marvelous!
