Letterman, Blagojevich Take Comic Punches (Video)

By The Staff at wowOwow.com
Blago on "Letterman"/YouTube

Rod Blagojevich just can’t stay away from TV! But we think the recently ousted Illinois governor probably learned his lesson after sitting down with David Letterman last night. Letterman was relentless (and funny, of course) as he took on the blown-dry pol.

"I’ve been wanting to be on your show in the worst way for the longest time," Blago said, to start things off.

"Well, you’re on in the worst way, believe me," Dave replied.

Blago continued to try and make his case that he did nothing wrong, but Letterman wouldn’t let him off the hook, saying, "I saw you on ‘The View,’ I saw you on the ‘Rachel Maddow Show,’ I saw you on the ‘Today Show,’ I saw you, I think, on every other show that is in production currently, and the more you talked and the more you repeated your innocence, the more I said to myself, ‘Oh, this guy is guilty.’"

"Well, I can appreciate your position, but consider a circumstance that might involve your life," Blagojevich answered. "… I can just tell you that it’s a very difficult thing that I’ve gone through, unimaginable, unexpected, unanticipated, and I assert my innocence because it is the truth. And the alternative is to sit in some corner, hide, cower in the fetal position and … accept what people are saying that you did.”

Unlike Blago’s Tuesday night appearance on Larry King’s show, in his 20-minute interview Letterman pounded Blagojevich on details of the case he still faces in criminal court. Watch the beginning of the interview:

Letterman has been one of the best political interviewers as far as late night talk shows go. He doesn’t pull punches.

I read about 4 pieces in the Chicago papers today about this interview, and I have to say after watching it, that it really didn’t go as badly for Blago as I had read. Also, Letterman, amazed me. He was both direct and pulled no punches, but managed to stay cordial. I like that in a host.

I thought the same thing as Letterman. Doesn’t he have to persuade the people of Illinois he’s innocent? Why on earth does Blagojevich want to be on all these television shows? I can’t figure him out — he either has incredible chutzpa or is delusional and I wonder what his options are from here.

He doesn’t have to persuade the people of Illinois that he is innocent… he has already been Impeached and put out of office. The only thing left for him now is to wait for Fitzgerald to indict him, then he has to prove his case to a judge (not sure if there is a jury).

And after they find him guilty what are his options?

I guess an appeal. Or prison.

I think this TV blitz is for the purpose of influencing the jury pool. All he needs is ONE juror to buy his BooHoo routine and he stays out of prison. That’s what’s going on here … plus he’s a media whore.

He and Palin both like the media so much maybe they should team up for the “Rod and Sarah” show. A reality show about how self-absorbed politicians manage to stay in the spotlight even after they’ve been rejected.

He really does appear to be in denial. Someone from Illinois can correct me if I am wrong, but weren’t there 3 past Illinois Governors that went to prison for corruption to the same degree that he is facing. So what makes him really believe he will be found innocent? Especially in light of his comments captured on audiotape by the FBI? He is a riddle wrapped inside a mystery inside an enigma, as the old expression goes.

Belinda, you’re right about the number of recent Illinois governors who’ve gone to prison. If Blago is convicted, we will have two governors in at the same time, because the last one is still in prison. We have quite a few people in the state legislature who need to be prosecuted also. Personally, I am extremely irritated that the talk shows and the TV news shows are still giving this slimeball airtime. He is such a publicity hound, and they are just rewarding him. And we’re stuck with his pathetic appointment as Senator for the next two years. If the Dems don’t field someone other than Burris, I’ll have to vote Republican.

Burris? Oh my goodness how this man survived in public service as long as he did is still a mystery to me. Who in their right mind would have voted for him? His ego makes Blago’s appear to be meek in comparison. :-)

Burris and Joe the plumber would make a good team, don’t you think? They are both egoist and boors……….
