Prop. 8 Foes Hail 'Call in Gay Day' on Wednesday in Support of Same-Sex Marriage

Proposition 8 opponents are urging people to "call in gay" to work on Wednesday to show how much the country relies on gays and lesbians. Organized by JointheImpact.com and mirroring the 2006 "Day Without Immigrants" demonstration, "Day Without a Gay" encourages same-sex-marriage supporters to rally for a "nationwide strike and economic boycott."
People are being encouraged to do the following, says event coordinator David Craig:
"Call in gay" to their place of work by taking the day off or shutting down their businesses. We are also encouraging them to refrain from buying, spending money or supporting the economy in any way. Finally, we are asking them to get involved, either by volunteering or by signing petitions to repeal anti-gay initiatives in their home state.
The initiative comes on the same day as Human Rights Day, which began in the 1950s to celebrate basic civil liberties. It also comes during a Depression-fearing economy — where jobs are at stake and workers feel apprehensive about taking a "sick" day. But the issue of gay marriage has become a very heated topic lately, since California passed Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage. The protest organizers were also responsible for the November 15 National Day of Protest to repeal Prop 8.
