Death Watch for Hillary Campaign ... Or Is It? by Monica Crowley

Editor’s Note: Monica Crowley, Ph.D., is a panelist on The McLaughlin Group, the host of the nationally syndicated radio program, "The Monica Crowley Show" and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Everyone is abuzz about the impending demise of the Hillary Clinton for President campaign. They say: She will wait until all the votes are in and counted (which would be Tuesday night). She will give a major speech from her (adopted) home base of New York, which will be gracious and honorable. (Hey, there’s a first time for everything.) She will suspend her campaign, send her exhausted staffers home to the families they haven’t seen in a year, process their expense reports (especially those Dunkin’ Donuts runs through the snows of Iowa) and figure out how to pay back her campaign debt (that $32 million Bill got from the thugs in Kazakhstan would do it.)

But there is one thing we should know by now about the Clintons: Nothing is as it appears.

Impossible delegate math? No problem. Big debt? No worries. Black candidate from whom the Democratic party doesn’t want to take the nomination? More of a problem.

But the Clintons are ingenious Houdinis. They pull the most creative solutions (read: political hits) out of the hat when there is a gun to their heads. They may be cooking something up. They may be waiting for the next political IED to blow up in Obama’s face (and make no mistake: there are more to come). They may be doing both.

One thing’s for sure: After running for the presidency for 30 years (and getting it twice), they aren’t about to become passive observers. They are manic doers, and the one thing they know how to do — the ONLY thing they know how to do — is run for president.

Numbers be damned. They aren’t about to stop now.

Have either of you ever heard of “While England Slept”, authored by John F. Kennedy? Really, these comparisons are not very illuminating. I am still trying to recover from the thought that Obama is similar to Abraham Lincoln.

I think Ms. Crowley may be onto something there. Sen. Clinton et al do seem to like drama. I must say I empathize with (though I can’t quite understand) those who will never vote for Sen. Obama. I feel the same way about their candidates. A feeling that I suspect is getting more and more entrenched every day on all sides. Which leads me to think my friend may have been correct: Americans get the president they deserve. Or maybe we can be the people our country and the world deserves, no matter who ends up as our president. It will be our challenge. Staying tuned … A.S.

It appears to me that Crowley is the one who likes drama.

Yep. That, too.

I have been against Senator Clinton and any and all Senators who voted for this nightmare war, and for those in the Senate who still refuse their moral and Constitutional responsibilities to impeach. But nothing can take away Hillary’s incredible drive and determination. I wish she would use that, as Senator Paul Wellstone did, to bring this administration to justice. Senator Kennedy said his proudest vote in nearly 50 years of service was the one he cast against the Iraq authorization. As a nation we need to reclaim and redeem America’s moral standing and image, and to do justice to all the millions of innocents who have been maimed, murdered, and the millions more turned into refugees. Shame on the Democratic Senate if continue to do the right thing. Here is what Robert Greenwald said about why Bush Inc is undeterred in committing crimes against humanity: “Every day, it becomes more difficult to blame George Bush, Dick Cheney and comrades for their seven years (and counting) of crimes, corruption and destruction of our political values. Think about it this way: if you were a high government official and watched as it is revealed, right out in the open, that you suspended the Fourth Amendment, authorized torture, proclaimed yourself empowered to break the law, and sent the nation’s top law enforcement officer to lie blatantly about how and why the 9/11 attacks happened so that you could acquire still more unchecked spying power and get rid of lawsuits that would expose what you did, and the political press in this country basically ignored all of that and blathered on about Obama’s bowling score and how he eats chocolate, wouldn’t you also conclude that you could do anything you want, without limits, and know there will be no consequences? What would be the incentive to stop doing all of that?” The reason we are where we are today is that the heads of Iran-Contra weren’t indicted and this is same paradigm expanded, same players, Round II. People to need wake up and focus their energy on the things that change the dynamic. One easy thing for every one to do today; take a few minutes and send an email to your representatives on this easy form on the critical Global Warming bill that Bush has vowed to veto. Barbara Boxer, one of the few Senators who voted against the Iraq war resolution, is working hard on the legislation and has asked for your help. If you have an email group pass it on, or if you have the time, start a Facebook Activism Group, give it a catchy name and avatar, add the link, and some green links, etc and many will sign: http://ga6.org/campaign/climate_security_act?qp_source=csahuffpo

I would second Renata’s comments with a few of my own. I do not support Hillary’s candidacy as President or Vice President, and I feel Obama would be foolish to offer such a compromise as to put her on the ticket, as I am certain she would take every opportunity to push her own agenda ahead of his. With all due respect to all women of our country who support Hillary, I do believe she has demonstrated that she deserves to lead our country. She has a questionable moral compass at best, as evidenced in the Bosnia fiasco, Irish peace talk claims, Iraq war criticisms, etc., all of which is well documented: http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/05/21/trail-of-tall-tales-hillary-clin…. In fairness, two seperate articles document lies told by McCain and Obama, but an honest reading of the three leaves no question as to where the most self-serving and blatant lies originate. I want a female president. I do NOT want just any female president, and I will, I’m afraid, be strongly pursuaded to cast MY vote for McCain if Obama brings Hillary onto the ticket. Put her on the Supreme Court, if a bargain must be struck, but I do not trust her in the White House. Here is a question to Hillary supporters. If she is such the champion of voters’ rights, why did she not submit her protest when the DNC Rules Committee first announced the decision not to seat Florida and Michigan? Why did she affirm that those states would not count in public interview? The battle for voters rights should have been fought months ago, if that is her concern, but she wasn’t willing to wage that war until now. And btw, she didn’t win the popular vote. Her calculations neither take into consideration the Michigan uncommitted voters nor the results of the Texas caucus, which Obama won.

Why should Senator Clinton lift one finger to help Senator Obama? He has necessary funds, the majority of the delegates, the Democratic Party, CNN, NBC/MSNBC, other media on his side. Perhaps working together, they can win the support of the hispanics, the bitter, cling-to-their-guns-and-church, lunchpale democrats. The Clintons should take a long, well-earned vacation. You did great, Senator Clinton. Many of us are so proud of you, and thank you.

Because she promised to. And she wants a Democratic victory in November.

Elizabeth: Yes, exactly and that is why I can’t understand the talk I’ve seen here about voting for McCain instead if she doesn’t win. How can she not win—if she is offered vice pres she’d be foolish not to take it—that alone is a major step to the predidency.

What’s the “package” again? An adulterer and an enabler? No, thank you. I’d rather take my chances with the newbie.

Okay is it Renata or Suzanne? I know I’m 50% right. I love the platitudes now given to Hillary. However, if the question comes up about her being VP, the insults will fly again.

My biggest fear is that we are not finished with Hillary and Bill. I’ve been waiting for months for her to go away and now she might be offered the Vice Presidency. You just can’t win!
