Debra Ryan Pleads Guilty in Helping Hedge Fund Boyfriend Fake His Suicide

Wall Street Master of the Universe wrote ‘Suicide is Painless’ on his car before going on the lam.  For his girlfriend, the pain is only beginning

The girlfriend of disgraced hedge-fund manager Samuel Israel III has pleaded guilty to helping him skip bail by faking his suicide.

Debra Ryan told a federal judge in New York on Tuesday that Israel woke her up the night before he was due to report to a Boston prison in June and asked her to help him flee. She said they packed an RV, which was later found abandoned on a bridge outside New York with the words "suicide is painless" written on the hood. Israel surrendered to police about three weeks later. He is currently undergoing a psychological evaluation before he begins serving a 20-year term for fraud.

Ryan, who was arrested the day after her boyfriend fled, faces up to ten years in prison for aiding and abetting a failure to report to prison, though prosecutors are expecting a more lenient sentence of four-to-ten months.

So she help him. He has a fear of prison. Has a fear of suicide by faking a suicide action with a note. But she help him. I wonder what her fear is? Is it fear of him or fear itself.

Up to ten years in prison and for what? Was he worth it?

I wondered that too. Maybe she feared him so much it was worth it, but I wonder about that too?

Not only are hedge fund managers breaking the laws, but their girlfriends are as well. As well intentioned as increased regulations are, a scammer is going to find a way to scam. Additionally, starting a hedge fund is so easy that it attracts scammers.
