As Detroit's Big 3 Sink, Smart Car Sitting Pretty

By The Staff at wowOwow.com
While the Big Boyz of Detroit were in DC on bended knee yesterday to bail out the companies that brought us the SUV, Detroit’s president of Smart Car, Dave Schembri, spoke to wOw about an alternative for an affordable trip to grandmother’s this holiday season.

Enter: The eco-friendly cute Smart Car for Two, an appropriately named two-seater automobile, manufactured by Mercedes-Benz in France. Sold in 36 other countries for a decade with more than a million cars sold, the 8.8-foot-long Smart Car hit the U.S. market last January. And sales show no sign of slowing down!

We didn’t know this until we spoke with Schembri, but the idea for the Smart Car actually came from Swatch watch inventor Nicolas Hayek in the early 1990s. Like Swatch’s interchangeable bands, Smart Cars have differing panels so that an owner can change their Crayola car color whenever they please and have what looks to jealous neighbors like a new car. At 33 miles per gallon in the city and 41 mpg highway, Smart is the most fuel-efficient, lowest-cost-of-ownership fully gas-powered vehicle on the road. And, yes, that’s taking mileage, residuals, actual cost and insurance into account. Sounds smart to us.

And so does Schembri, who offers his take on the bailout, tells us why he never considered advertising on television and promises never, ever to gloat. Oh, and he tells us all how we can have the smartest looking Smart Car on the block!

wOw: GM, Ford and Chrysler asked for a $34 billion bailout plan and the House passed $14 billion. Obviously things aren’t going so well on their end. How is your business doing in light of the economy? Do you need a government bailout? Seems everyone’s asking for one these days.

Dave: For Smart USA, we launched our company in January 2008. America really embraced the concept of the micro car. It has done extremely well and it has exceeded our expectations for the first year. We delivered our first car on January 16 to a Manhattan resident and by late October we delivered our 20,000th car. It’s a car that really has the opportunity to change the landscape of our highways in the United States, because of its size, concept and because of its price. We have been able to reach out to a whole variety of different consumer groups.

wOw: Are you gloating over your business now?

Dave: We’ve been very successful this year and really can stamp our launch phase of this project as a success even in this difficult economy. But no, we’re not gloating at all. I’ve been in this business long enough to never take one sale for granted. Never, ever gloat! You just have to keep working hard every day to improve.

wOw: For those not in the know, what is a Smart Car?

Dave: Smart stands for Swatch Mercedes Art. It is a car that was developed and designed to really get around crowded urban areas in a unique way. It’s unique through its design and size — at 8.8 feet long, it’s about the size of most people’s side sofa in their living room. And it’s 5’1" tall. It gives you the benefit of sitting so that you’re eye-to-eye with other drivers. I’m 6’1" and I fit in there just fine. We had two people 6’7" who sat side-by-side very comfortably, so it has tremendous leg and head room. We have four air bags, two front and two sides including head and thorax protection.

wOw: So who’s buying Smart?

Evidently that trip around the country had them in Houston a while back, I saw a line of them going down the freeway. All in a row about 6 of them, they were so great looking but I kept watching for a very large pool cue behind them.

They are great! My husband introduced them to me a few of years ago back when they were in Europe only. We need a four seater car for our house. I keep saying we should get only for our third car, it hasn’t happened.

Any American who has spent time on the stradas and autobahns of Europe has seen how cars of this sort not only make incredible sense, but are something we could actually make a part of life in the USA. The American car culture as we know it has been defined by the Big 3 and Big Oil. We know nothing else, and can’t imagine how the rest of the civilized world views personal transportation in a more enlightened fashion. I’m ready to make a Smart Car my next car.

There are several Smart Cars in my town—-either that, or someone keeps changing the colors on their care every couple of weeks….the people who I have seen drive them, range from college students to early boomers…..In fact—-I have even been able to sit in one—-and at 5’10”, was quite comfy. My brother, who is 6’7” (2 meters) sat in one, as well, and was even ‘allowed’ to drive it around the parking lot—-in Detroit! I read about these cars 4 or 5 years ago—-even measured my couch! to get an idea how long it was! The mileage though, is not as good as another car, owned by one of my friends—she does not have a smart car—-but she did have to order hers —-it came from Europe, ONLY comes in black—is about the same size as the Smart Car, the price is fairly equal—-in that without air conditioning package it was in the $11k range, with, priced it up to somwhere between $13-14k—- She ordered it in January, and got it about June—and did I say it came from Erope? and she gets 52 MPG!!!!!! that is 52!!!!! She parked it in front of my house the second day she had it, on the street, when she came to visit and show it off….I was at the back of my house—-I can stand in the kitchen and see all the way thru the house to the front window—-and when I saw it parked, before the doorbell ring—I thought OMG! That thing looks like a HUGE insect! hahaha….as I got closer, though, and perception was based on reality and not a blur—it really was a car. The seats sit higher in that car than in the smart car——something for people who are overweight to consider—-less strain to get in and out…….

Do you know the name of this car Patty. Being very short, barely 5’, I have the problem of not being able to see out in some cars so the higher seats sounds good. When I was married to my ex who was 6’8” we had 2 Volkswagen bugs because they were one of the few cars that would adjust to our differences in height. I love small cars. Did your friend have any problem getting this one converted to U.S. standards - when I was working with Customs I know that was something that would come up with things like Bentleys that people were trying to import.

Not ‘off hand’, but it startes with a ‘T’….and if you give me a day or so, I can get hold of her, and ask her….and then get back to you….on that…and I remembered AFTER I posted, that she had to wait almost a year, to get it after she ordered it….still…the price is right, and the mileage is even ‘righter’…….

No problem, I’m not going out and ordering one right now, just wondering for future possibilities. So don’t worry about it. My little Hyundai is holding up pretty well right now and does well on gas since it is a 5 speed, it would cost me more to be making payments on anything so I’ll stick with what I have.

I’m never driving something that a semi tractor trailor driver, hyped up on speed could run over like a coke can! Not for me.

They are cute cars but they don’t get the gas savings you would expect.

Not only doesn’t Smart get the fuel economy you’d expect (it’s never been rated best for fuel economy anywhere), it’s not as safe as Dave Schembri wants you to think. It didn’t get the top rating for crash testing in its weight category (those star ratings apply for different weight categories) either here or in Europe, and it’s the only vehicle in its weight category. Overall, that makes it the biggest four-wheeled safety risk on the road. It’s also slow around town and no fun to drive on the highway. Be very careful of this car.
