'Drunken Negro Head' Cookies Take Bite at Barack Obama (Video)

By The Staff at wowOwow.com
Cookie in "honor" of Barack Obama

Every once in a while, something comes along that leaves you shaking your head in disbelief. This is one of those stories. A New York City bakery has been selling special "Drunken Negro Head" cookies in "honor" of President Barack Obama. How unappetizing!

When Fox News reporter Arnold Diaz confronted owner Ted Kefalinos, the baker insisted he sees nothing wrong with his creation.

"I called them Drunken Negro Heads. What’s the problem with that?" Kefalinos asks the newscaster. "On Inauguration Day, I thought it would be cool to change the name to Obama Heads. I just changed it for the day."

Kefalinos’s Lafayette French Pastry isn’t your ordinary bakery either. French Pastry is a popular Greenwich Village hot spot frequented by celebrities, and it has been featured on trend-setting shows including "Sex and the City." Now, Kefalinos and his bakery are more famous than ever — and not for the right reasons.

While Kefalinos sees no problem in his freedom of confection — he told Gothamist the "whole thing was blown out of proportion" — some customers quite rightly find it offensive. And besides, he told the website, nobody got upset about the "Dead Geese Bread" he sold after the recent Hudson River plane crash. Also, Kefalinos insists he can’t be racist because, for one, "my brother-in-law, he’s Cuban." Right.

Here’s the aforementioned Fox report:

I notice that everyone who is a racist but doesn’t belong to the KKK considers themselves not racist and get angry everytime the subjuct comes up. I admit that some cry racist too much but for goodness sake when things like the black mayor of a small town in New Jersey was harrassed into leaving his post by the KKK. The town was predominately white and they did not want the black mayor to resign .

I question Fox news for believing this was even newsworthy.. nothing like stirring a pot, Fox, and giving this man and his “bakery” extra publicity. Smooth., anything for ratings, huh?

Dee, Arnold Diaz is an investigative and consumer reporter, who exposes and denounces wrong doing and incompetence by private industry, government agencies, and scam artists on his segment “Shame on You”. He has won well over 20 Emmy awards for his reporting. I think he did a good thing by reporting on this bakery — more than likely at the request of the first woman he interviewed. This guy and his bakery does a big business in the village and attracts a lot of celebrity types. What I’d like to know is whether Arnold Diaz’s report has had a negative impact on this man’s business.

This kind of garbage just doesn’t belong here. Give it a rest, please.

Maurine—I think they did give it a rest. When I tried to see the video, it said Video Has Been Removed. But this was on the news. Odd.

I live in a country which holds the right to freedom of speech. Included in that is the right to freedom of bad baking.

When I see things like this, I see my ancestors hanging from trees, or being beaten to death by angry mobs. I see the ugly part of America and it reminds me of how far we have to go and erases any thought of how far we have come. It makes me angry and hurt at the same time.

Belinda, I don’t blame you for feeling hurt and angry…but the fact that this bozo made the news tells us he’s not representative of the norm. Don’t you think most people would be as appalled by this as we are? Hang in there…don’t let the jackasses of the world get you down;-)

my only solution is try and ignore the personal attacks…… respond to posts that are blatant lies or smears. Report any posts that feel dangerous or threatening….. and hope that if things get out of hand, the powers that be will take matters into their own hands to improve the site. I dont want anyone banned for sharing fair and honest views……… but the other postings should be looked at with a concerned eye.

Don’t take the bait Merrill — there are a few regular posters, who personlize and belittle when they don’t agree — sadly, mostly women — grown up mean girls — don’t lower yourself — just ignore them.

I love this site! It has opened my eyes to the good the bad and the ugly of people and the standards by which they govern themselves. Many write to insite, many write to invite, and many write to inlighten! Those like myself try to decide in the reading who is doing what to whom! At this point I feel that the inlighten ones keep me thinking about what is and what should be, I need to be reminded that there are many ways to view a situation and not rush to judgement of the writer!

Ok people, calm down. “You wanna live in this crazy world? Live Cool!” West Side Story…..now the mantra of our new President. I think the cookies are sophmoric and offensive. That said, NYC has a tradition of ethnic groups slandering each other. (Watch the film “Blue in the Face.”) My husband is a native New Yorker. His sense of humor and “in your face” racial remarks were very upsetting to my Midwestern sensibilities, and still are, at times. However, in a free society, and in the ultimate mixing pot of NYC, I believe we must discern between bad taste and real hate speech. They wont admit it, but some New Yorkers found these cookies extremely amusing. Even if they voted Democratic. We must never condone hate mongers, violence, or exclusion. We must not take ourselves too seriously. In saying this, I think of the anti-Mohammad cartoon that sparked riots and death. I think of the Dutch filmmaker Van Gogh who was murdered because his film upset certain Muslims. We can’t allow stupid stuff to become part of a real debate about racism. To do so, discredits those Americans who lost their lives combatting real racism, hate, and violence in this country. So…let ‘em eat cake…..or offensive cookies….just don’t lop off their heads for doing so!

Rhonda, Very well said and you’re absolutely correct…but I’m still appalled than anyone would even set foot into that bakery.
