Hi Phyllis, I just wanted to say Hi. Our day has finally come. In about an hour and a half, I’ll be shutting down my office and going to pick up my mom. Bring her back to my place for dinner. Tonight I’ll raise my glass to Obama, and I’ll say a toast to a few of us Wowers. You will definitely be one of them, Phyllis. I have appreciated reading your words, for so long. Hopeful and nervous, - - Cheers!

NP- This is Rena, one of Josie’s Friends. She told us that she had a friend on this site that we were supposed to give a toast to. she had us all turn one direction and said this toast is to “NP” in the west. So, we are toasting to the west. Everyone but Josie turned around to the west. Bless her heart she was facing east when she started the toast. She is directionally challenged! Cheers California!

Hi Rena, What a nice surprise to hear form you! This is so great. What a wonderful night it has been. I’m so happy. I’m still pinching myself - is Obama really our President elect? Am I dreaming? I’m ecstatic, Rena. And thank you and Josie, and everyone else there - for the toast. I mean it. If you had been here, I would have hugged everyone of you, and probably picked you and Josie up and twirled you around - but not at the same time! Like I say, I am ecstatic. Thank you, Rena, for this e-mail. And tell Josie, please. Like I say - I am just thrilled. Happiness to all!

DeB’…Obama was born in 1961, and Kennedy defeated Nixon in 1960. ;-)~

Oh, I thought he was 44! I must have confused his age with Palins! YIKES!

Yeah, Lyndon Johnson defeated Barry Goldwater by a landslide in 1964. The problem with presidential elections now is that they go on for 1-1/2 years or more. Whoever gets elected today and is sworn in on January 20th, 2009, will have to start campaigning again by January 2011, if he wants to run for re-election in 2012. That means that, if Obama’s elected president, he will have spent more than 3-1/2 years on the campaign trail and 3-1/2 years in the White House by the time November 2012 rolls around - virtually the same amount of time. How can any president or senator adequately perform the duties of the job he/she is elected for, while spending so much time campaigning? Just look at how many votes in the Senate that Obama & McCain have missed during the past year.

Well, as the incumbant the best campaigning he can do, is to do a good job. Let’s hope he is not corrupted by the office and sticks as closely as the reality of the situation allows him, to his convictions. I was listening to Katrina Vanden Heuvel, the editor of The Nation, in an interview on the Thom Hartman show this afternoon and she said that having to deal with the crisis this nation is in may actually HELP Obama to be bold and take chances he might not otherwise take if things weren’t so dire… sort of like happened with FDR. Funny, about 2 days or so ago, I sent Obama an e-mail saying “You have run your campaign like JFK, please run your administration like FDR!”

Sweet. Well, no matter what, the Republicans will always paint Democratic presidents - no matter how great - as no-good so & so’s, and the Dems will do the same of the Repubs. One would think JFK was an evil no-account, what with all the revisionist historians reworking the truth. And FDR, the greatest president in my opinion, is even criticized. History = his story. By the way, Bill Clinton was great, too.

You are aware, are you not, James that FDR was a Jew hater? Read you history.

I’d advise you to do the same. In his book, “SAVING THE JEWS: Franklin D. Roosevelt and the Holocaust,” Robert N. Rosen argues that, in fact, FDR was one of the few men of his time who understood — and sought to defeat — the enormous threat Hitler posed, and that the Roosevelt Administration did all that could reasonably be done, under the circumstances, to save the Jews and other victims of Nazism. Rosen reveals that, seen in this light, FDR’s achievements in battling Nazism and saving Jews were very nearly monumental. “Roosevelt did not abandon the Jews of Europe,” he writes. “On the contrary, he led the worldwide coalition against Nazism in a war that took fifty million lives.” SAVING THE JEWS offers extensive evidence of FDR’s close ties to Jewish leaders, and his appointment of many Jews to high-level positions, including the Supreme Court. Rosen outlines the numerous attempts FDR made to allow Jewish refugees to enter the United States — and explains why, at weaker periods of his presidency, FDR simply didn’t have the political capital to wage these battles.

It is really great to see how enthusiastic young people are about Obama. I’ve told my 21 yr old and 26 yr old to text all their friends to urge them to vote… and they told me they’ve been getting texts from THEIR friends telling them to vote!

Well a couple thousand were already lined up outside the park at around 3pm. I spoke to my son about an hour ago and he had just finished voting and was on his way to Grant Park meeting about 6 or 8 friends who also have tickets. What a blast for them! The weather is wonderful tonight too, especially when you think of how horrible a November night in Chicago COULD be. Here’s hoping we have something great to celebrate tonight! Sláinte!
