Elie Wiesel: 'Psychopath Is Too Nice a Word' for Bernie Madoff

Wiesel, speaking at ‘Madoff and the Meltdown,’ said ‘psychopath’ is not the word to describe the weasel, because ‘he knew what he was doing.’ Wiesel did refer to Madoff variously as ‘a crook, a thief, a scoundrel,’ as well as a ‘swindler’ and ‘evil’

Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel – who knows all too well the evils of mankind – thinks "psychopath is too nice a word " to describe the Ponzi-schemer Bernie Madoff.

Madoff wiped out more than $15 million from the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity – a loss that simply rips apart Wiesel’s heart.

"It’s the inhumanity of this man – that he can go around, depriving people of their livelihoods …" said the 80-year-old Nobel Peace Prize-winning author while speaking at an event called "Madoff and the Meltdown," which was hosted by Portfolio magazine. "It breaks my heart."

Wiesel went on to say that Madoff deserves a unique sentence for the injustices he inflicted on more than 4,000 people:

He should go before a group of judges who would imagine a punishment for him. He should be put in a solitary cell with a screen, and on the screen, for at least five years of his life, [would be] pictures of his victims.

Look what you have done to this old lady, look what you have done to that child.

The author and philanthropist also shared the story of how he initially invested with Madoff. They first met 20 years ago and Wiesel said he was immediately impressed by the former Nasdaq chief’s persona.

"He presented himself as a philanthropist. He gave so much to institutions … There was a myth he created around him."

The man once hailed as investment wunderkind remains under house arrest in his multimillion-dollar Manhattan abode

And while Wiesel said "psychopath" is not the word to describe the weasel because "he knew what he was doing," the venerable author did refer to Madoff variously as "a crook, a thief, a scoundrel," as well as "swindler" and "evil." Tell us below: What’s the best word to describe Bernie Madoff?

Because with all the money he stole he can afford excellent legal counsel?

Because if he was in jail, he would be murdered.  They want him alive for his trials.  I really have heard it is for security reasons….

Well, Joe the Plumber is at CPAC promoting ‘shooting’ people, so maybe they’re worried about HIM.

That’s true.  Everyone wants to kill him or hire someone to kill him.

The sad part about the Madoff story is no punishment that anyone can think of would suffice. Nothing. Bless his beautiful heart but the punishment Elie envisions would only have an affect on a person with a soul. Madoff has proven he is soulless, lacking the most minuscule, modicum of compassionate for his fellow human beings. He is the devil incarnate walking among us. I would wish for him to burn in Hell, but the truth is he probably wouldn’t recognize it as being punishment for his sins.

I love it that hundreds of people are sending Elie Wiesel money.  Madoff not only ruined his foundation, he wiped out his family’s personal money.  So people are sending him money.  I think that is just beautiful.  I will have to find his address so I can send him some too.  What Madoff did —not just to Wiesel but to so many others—is just horrific.  I hope they can find the money and start giving it back to people.

I hope all Madoff’s assets, personal possessions, EVERYTHING is sold off and dispersed to the people he swindled for at least a small token of compensation!

Bernie Madoff: A soulless, parasitic bastard!

Madoff is only the tip of the iceberg.  There have always been people who will take advantage of others.  What we need to do is throw his small brain into a jail cell so that other people won’t think they can get off easy.  Security is a lame excuse as to why he is not in jail.  If that were the case, then Charles Manson, OJ Simpson, and countless others would not be incarcerated.

SHAME on him.  He’ll get his reward in hell.

Yes, like Michael Vick [dog killer], Madoff is confined to his home.

I really feel for everyone, but you would think with all the bail-out money that the USG is tossing around that they would take a sliver of it and re-fund the philanthropic org’s [e.g., Wiesel’s Foundation of Humanity] and other charities that went under as a result of Madoff’s greed.

Sad part is that Madoff will be able to buy the best legal representation.

All of his transparent assets—if any should be stripped from him and put into a fund to repay those he ripped off.  All of his favorite "things" in his home should be removed and auctioned at Christie’s and proceeds donated to those he ripped off.  He should then be confined to one room in his "house arrest"  the bathroom.
