Hasselbeck: Don't Criticize Obama Ladies' Fashion (Video)

By The Staff at wowOwow.com
The View/YouTube

The conservative and often outspoken Elisabeth Hasselbeck shifted her Bush-loving gears yesterday when she defended First Lady Michelle Obama.

Speaking out against the critical media who laid into the First Lady for her Inaugural fashion choices, a somewhat shaken Hasselbeck said, "I think, look, if this is the media’s attempt at trying to be objective as we move into the next administration, they’re moving in the wrong direction."

Hasselbeck went on to praise the fashions that the First Lady and her daughters wore throughout the Inaugural celebrations, both for their affordability and the fact that they were made by American designers. "All these naysayers on the side better find something else to get objective about," she said, i.e., find something else to poke fun at. Yesterday’s remarks remind us of when Hasselbeck said that focus on Sarah Palin’s fashion was "deliberately sexist."

Anyway, here’s video of yesterday’s comments …

Ever since Election Night, the young Republican has displayed her support for the Democratic family. She even spoke on the show about her daughter wanting to cut out a newspaper photograph of the Obamas, frame it and hang it up on her wall.

Good for Elizabeth. It’s time we all showed some maturity and get on with life. The days of bashing a President, whatever affiliation, should stop. We’ve got more important things to do. It’s time to stop thinking in the last administration’s “black & white” style. It’s time for everyone to “grow up” and start thinking in “color” - preferably bright, beautiful, mixed colors! That’s what the world is made up of…..colorful people. “Black and white” points of view are old school. And Elizabeth seems to moving out of the habit and into a more colorful, accepting approach. Good for her. Hope people will follow her example.

I just happened to wander onto, and as a result register as a user on, this site today. After making a post on the “too rich or too thin” thread I continued to bumble about and found “The View” page and watched the clip of yesterdays “The View” regarding First Lady Obama’s inauguration fashion choices. Having done I found myself smiling and thinking about ‘hypocrisy’. Hmmmmm.

This is the first, and who knows maybe the only time, I have agreed with EH - the garments our new first lady has chosen for these first days have been appropriate, and beautiful - the fabric quality - which doesn’t always read well on tv - was exquisite, she chose American designers that are not well known to the general public, and that many - though not all, can afford. I hope these designers recognize the gift this is, and make affordable clothing with style - much like Vera Wang has done with the versatility of her many collections. The new first family looked beautiful - and appropriate - I believe they are sophisticated, unpretentious, and, as many have said - a breathe of fresh air. I never gave the fashion of the previous administration a thought - wonder why?!

The media and the public have always taken jabs at the members of the first family. This goes all the way back to George Washington. Does anyone recall the merciless treatment of President Carter’s family? Do the name’s Nancy Reagan, Barbara Bush, Hillary Clinton or Chelsea Clinton stir any memories of undeserved negative attention spent on the style or condition of first family’s hair, clothes, physical attributes or whatever? Barack Obama is the POTUS and the focus on his family’s appearance, unfair as it is, comes with the territory. Everyone should be rejoicing in the fact that the Obama’s are receiving equal treatment instead of trembling in guilty panic that this is anything “more”.

Belinda, this is merely a suggestion but perhaps you would be well served to reconsider your “blanket” assessment of (in your words) “What I call staunch right wing Republicans”. I believe Ms Hasselbeck’s statement alluded to the need for “the media” to “get a grip” fashion critiques are of no importance and will not serve as a substitution for serious policy critiquing. As for the First Ladies fashion choices, they were hers and she was most certainly entitled to make them. She was appropriate and inoffensive in her manner of dress and I thought it idle and superficial in the extreme to sit about and waste time ‘cawing and picking’ about something as inconsequential as whether or not “that print or this color, dah da, dah da” was a ‘proper choice’. Neither the president nor the First Lady was scandalous or offensive in their manner of dress; the President’s pants weren’t precariously perched about his low hip and her skirt wasn’t flapping about in the mid thigh area. Fashion is or should be a free expression of ones tastes………..goodness what a waste of time!!

it’s not just the first lady who has INAPPROPRIATE focus placed on her appearance, to the exclusion of other qualities. hiary, on the campaign trail wore a somewhat low-cut neckline, and that was the focus, not her message. oh, and how inappropriate this was FOR HER AGE!!! agree with palin’s politics or you don’t, but the focus would have been on her wardrobe. so the repubs dressed her, to expectations of her position and she gave the clothing back. so then the focus was on the NEED to dress this candidate. we’ve gotten no where, as long as what we wear in considered more interesting than what we are or think. it’s one of the reasons the wage gap has never really closed.

Democrat or Republican, I would hope that we could all agree that these kinds of things are NOT newsworthy. I can’t believe that news stories focus on these insignificant things when if anything, we could be talking about the million other much more important aspects of Michelle Obama’s life that have an actual bearing on her role as the First Lady. Some of these stories just get too trivial for me.

I like the idea that Michelle takes care of herself and love fashion, i respect every woman who loves fashion. However i believe that she must choose a better designer coz most of the clothes are boring
