Elvis Has Left the Building, by Monica Crowley

By Monica Crowley

Editor’s Note: Monica Crowley, Ph.D., is a panelist on The McLaughlin Group, the host of the nationally syndicated radio program "The Monica Crowley Show" and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

[On Friday] Barack Obama made his first public appearance since being elected president. (Unless you count the people who saw him working out at the gym, automatic weapons-toting Secret Service in tow.)

After meeting with his economic advisers, he had them line up behind a podium before he stepped to its microphone. The room was full of reporters, who fell into a reverential hush when he walked into the room.

The Anointed One finally speaks! What will he say?

Not a whole lot, as it turned out. He made a few prepared remarks about the economic crisis (nothing new there), and took a few short questions about whether he had answered Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s congratulatory note (he’s thinking about it), whether they had picked out a new puppy for his daughters (they’re still looking) and if he’s seeking advice from former presidents (something about not doing seances with the dead former presidents that later required an apology to Nancy Reagan).

Then he said, "Thank you very much," and left the building, Elvis-like.

The press was in full genuflection. And the president-elect was in full control mode. I hope he enjoyed that breathtakingly brief interlude with the press, because he’s not going to be able to get away with it much longer. The press supports him, of course, and they will do their best to protect him. But their job is to "cover" the president, even when that coverage is biased. So they will still need answers from him for their articles and columns and television and radio reports. Taking a question about the family dog and then bolting isn’t going to cut it much longer.

If the media is as protective of him as a security blanket, then why did he jet outta there faster than Michael Moore at a Jenny Craig consultation?

Because he wants to limit his exposure so he doesn’t make any gaffes. The media will allow that now, as part of the honeymoon they want to give him anyway. But in a few weeks, they will expect more. And more. The Anointed One will have to feed the Beast. Or he may be amazed by how quickly the Beast may turn on him. Of all the unwelcome surprises coming his way, that may be the most jarring of all.

Star, I have the feeling their throats may at this time be getting just a little dry. Don’t give up on O’Reilly, he is not to be swayed, truly

Star, the press turn like models on a runway… eventually. Even Bush will attest to that.

Marjorie, what would you do if Barack Obama ended up being an excellent president. Would you be happy for this country? Would you even admit it to yourself, let alone anyone else? Would you be disappointed? And what if he were to fail? Would you be secretly smiling while our country suffered? Would you be happy that he failed? Are you hoping that he fails so badly that you will be willing to cling to any straw of negativity you can find? A gaffe perhaps? A stumble? Will that mean he has failed and you can be happy again?

DeBúrca, You are projecting your personality onto me. Really not a good idea. I sincerely hope Obama is an excellent president. Why would I want more chaos for my country? I can promise you, if he does a good job in his first term, I will line up with the Democrats and vote for him in 2012. As much as you like to portray me as a hateful old woman, the truth is I”m much closer to being a pragmatist than that, which is probably more than can be said about most women on this site. If McCain had prevailed, what would you women be doing right now? Would this site even exist.

I’m glad to hear you are hoping Obama succeeds. If McCain had prevailed I would be hoping he succeeded. But Marjorie, it’s not a “honeymoon” and this article is a put down not only to Obama but to his supporters. It also reeks of hope for a failed presidency.

DeBúrca, Every president gets a honeymoon — usually the first 100 days. Monica Crowley is or portrays herself a Republican, not an Independent. The Republicans are looking forward to two things: the mid-term elections and 2012. Of course, they want to be in power again, of course they prefer they get another shot at it, the sooner the better. That’s what politics is. Right now, the Democrats appear so nervous about and protective of their candidate, it’s almost as if they have no confidence in him. The Dems find issue with every little thing that is said. I say let the thing play out. If Obama does well, he will definately have the majority behind him.

I don’t think people are nervous and protective… I just think after the terrible 8 years of Bush, along with the seemingly never ending, longest campaign in history and all the mud slinging that went on, people are simply sick of it and would like to enjoy having a new president for more than just a few days before the mudslinging and nasty comments begin again. At the very least we would like to put the campaign and the negativity away until the guy is actually sworn in.

Well Monica, You obviously didn’t listen to the Conservative pundits on Fox News Sunday who were mighty impressed with both Obama’s press conference and those who are advising him, and his Chief of Staff selection. See today’s Times editorial by Billy Kristol :)

He hasn’t been sworn in yet and needs to be given a chance. Expectations are very high. The honeymoon will come to an end eventually however. In fact, I think many those who opposed him will end up much happier than they imagined, but I think many on the far left will have their hearts broken. Obama is a pragmatist and will become much more of a centrist than many of his supporters — but I think that’s a good thing.

Lucinda, this is what the neo-cons do. They pick and pick and pick and pick. it’s because they’re without compassion, wit, or hope, so the only game they just keep at it. That’s because they have no game.

Monica, If only could have been there. Keep the hate coming we must be reminded that hate is alive and well.

Ah, Monica, somebody else who is eating those sour grapes. Switch to bananas that contain lots of potassium which will help clear those images of Elvis exiting. I expect, however, that we will hear more from you as the cold weather seeps into this sunny atmosphere––these winter birds of prey ready and waiting soaring the skies ready to pounce. Reading your piece is like getting a cold shower in a cheap motel during a January squall.

Monica Crowley comments, “The Anointed One finally speaks!” Ha! Ha! Ain’t that about the truth. However, the emperor has no clothes. Surprising so few can see through all this Hollywood production hype. Shoot, Obama could parade around naked on stage and our mainstream media would report what eloquent taste Obama has in clothes. I watched Monica Crowley on the McLaughlin Group television show this past weekend. What a zoo! Just a bunch of old codgers screaming and hollering all at the same time. Monica’s voice is the only voice worth a listen. Rather annoying she is shouted down with inanity. McLaughlin Group reminds me of The View. Dang, what a collection of old cackling hens raising a ruckus about a lot of nothing. I cannot wrap my mind around how people can watch television shows like those. Personally, I find more intellectual stimulation hanging around a real hen house listening to old hens cackle about this, cackle about that. At least around a hen house you can learn what the fox has been up to, learn what coming weather to expect and learn when there is a hawk high overhead. Anointed One! Most certainly, Obama is well oiled and very slick. Reminds me of snake oil. Okpulot Taha Choctaw Nation

That a majority of Americans, including many Republicans voted for a snake oil salesman, but YOU see through it ? You and Rush ? How lucky !!
