Elvis Has Left the Building, by Monica Crowley

By Monica Crowley

Editor’s Note: Monica Crowley, Ph.D., is a panelist on The McLaughlin Group, the host of the nationally syndicated radio program "The Monica Crowley Show" and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

[On Friday] Barack Obama made his first public appearance since being elected president. (Unless you count the people who saw him working out at the gym, automatic weapons-toting Secret Service in tow.)

After meeting with his economic advisers, he had them line up behind a podium before he stepped to its microphone. The room was full of reporters, who fell into a reverential hush when he walked into the room.

The Anointed One finally speaks! What will he say?

Not a whole lot, as it turned out. He made a few prepared remarks about the economic crisis (nothing new there), and took a few short questions about whether he had answered Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s congratulatory note (he’s thinking about it), whether they had picked out a new puppy for his daughters (they’re still looking) and if he’s seeking advice from former presidents (something about not doing seances with the dead former presidents that later required an apology to Nancy Reagan).

Then he said, "Thank you very much," and left the building, Elvis-like.

The press was in full genuflection. And the president-elect was in full control mode. I hope he enjoyed that breathtakingly brief interlude with the press, because he’s not going to be able to get away with it much longer. The press supports him, of course, and they will do their best to protect him. But their job is to "cover" the president, even when that coverage is biased. So they will still need answers from him for their articles and columns and television and radio reports. Taking a question about the family dog and then bolting isn’t going to cut it much longer.

If the media is as protective of him as a security blanket, then why did he jet outta there faster than Michael Moore at a Jenny Craig consultation?

Because he wants to limit his exposure so he doesn’t make any gaffes. The media will allow that now, as part of the honeymoon they want to give him anyway. But in a few weeks, they will expect more. And more. The Anointed One will have to feed the Beast. Or he may be amazed by how quickly the Beast may turn on him. Of all the unwelcome surprises coming his way, that may be the most jarring of all.

DeBúrca: Most of the American people are not buying into this anymore, but Ms Crowley is not speaking to “most” of the American people, is she? You might be surprised at the number of Obama supporters who are taking a step back for a second look. Monica Crowley is speaking to anyone who wants to listen, that could be 57 million plus.

I have friends in Israel who are very concerned about how he will govern, or rule, or whatever the verb du jour is.

Star “govern or rule, or whatever verb du jour”. I have heard news stories where they have said “when Obama begins to rule”. Then you could hear the reporters awareness of his “slip” about “rule”, and trip around a bit.

Crowely is speaking to the Republican base which would rather see this country go down in flames than see Obama succeed.

Based on what evidence? Being skeptical and critical is not unAmerican or hated-filled or however you are trying to position it. It’s our duty as Americans. We hired these people—or you guys did. Now we have the right to watch and comment on how they do. Period.

It is our duty as Americans to stand behind this president and wish him the best. If he screws up, it’s our duty to speak out. But to come out days after a decisive victory and bash a President-elect with terminology like “the anointed one” and looking for minor gaffes to criticise is petty and non productive. This kind of tear-down, diminish, disparage and vilify politics that underplays issues and elevated disparaging the person you didn’t vote for has to become a thing of the past if we are going to pull this country out of the hole its in. Obama hasn’t even been sworn in yet, so no, being critical ISN’T helpful or keeping with a civil change of government. After Obama is actually president, if he makes mistakes or does something you don’t agree with, by all means criticize. Otherwise all this type of talk does now is to serve to pump up the base and in an attempt keep them on the side of the far Right. That is Crowley’s whole purpose here. Period.

After Obama is actually president, if he makes mistakes or does something you don’t agree with, by all means criticize Thanks. And each person can decide when to start or if to start. Why would be it after he is president? Until then we should all baa as the sheeple?

Maybe just quit being sour grapes for a couple weeks.

The “Sheeple?” I think you just coined a new word here: Combination of sheep and people––Mary, Mary, quite contrary, how does your garden grow? I like it–––describes some people perfectly (not you, Star, you are more of a Mary).

DeBúrca: That is Crowley’s whole purpose here. And what has been Margo Howard’s sole purpose? What was and is continually said by the left about Palin is just as insulting to us as what the right says about Obama. I hate tit-for-tat, but there it is. When the left becomes civil, the right will follow.

As long as Palin is giving interviews and working the media, she is open to criticism. I think most of us are just so relieved to have dodged the bullet of having her be a heartbeat away from the presidency. Besides, Palin isn’t our President-elect. Barack Obama is. I know its hard to get back to thinking of a president who you may not have voted for as actually being YOUR president, but it is the way this country usually works. I didn’t vote for or agree with Ronald Reagan but I never doubted he was my president because he behaved like a leader. Unlike Bush who it was quite obvious never thought of himself as anything other than the head of the Republicans and whose partisan State of the Union speeches sounded like campaign stump speeches. Bush never behaved as a leader. And after 8 years of that, people might have forgotten what it is like to have a president who you may not have voted for, but who still considers himself your president. Just give the guy a chance.

DeBúrca: As long as Palin is giving interviews and working the media, she is open to criticism. Okay… enjoy. But remember your candidate, who is at this time president-elect will be subject to the same ongoing criticism. The faultfinding cannot flow in one direction all the time. If you want to give it, you have to be willing to take it.

The president-elect is on a different level than Palin in her FOX interviews talking about herself.

Marjorie, The Right is represented by loud mouths like O’Reilly, Hannity, Coulter and Limbaugh and you say the LEFT needs to become “civil”?? We’re in a thread that calls our new president “the anointed one” and goes on to rip him apart and you say the LEFT needs to become civil? You are forgetting that civility went out the window with Karl Rove and the Right Wing. Obama was even called the anti-christ during this election… and you think taking Palin to task over her lack of knowledge was uncalled for when she was seeking high office? Nobody on the right is in a position to lecture the “left” about civility.
