Elvis Has Left the Building, by Monica Crowley

By Monica Crowley

Editor’s Note: Monica Crowley, Ph.D., is a panelist on The McLaughlin Group, the host of the nationally syndicated radio program "The Monica Crowley Show" and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

[On Friday] Barack Obama made his first public appearance since being elected president. (Unless you count the people who saw him working out at the gym, automatic weapons-toting Secret Service in tow.)

After meeting with his economic advisers, he had them line up behind a podium before he stepped to its microphone. The room was full of reporters, who fell into a reverential hush when he walked into the room.

The Anointed One finally speaks! What will he say?

Not a whole lot, as it turned out. He made a few prepared remarks about the economic crisis (nothing new there), and took a few short questions about whether he had answered Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s congratulatory note (he’s thinking about it), whether they had picked out a new puppy for his daughters (they’re still looking) and if he’s seeking advice from former presidents (something about not doing seances with the dead former presidents that later required an apology to Nancy Reagan).

Then he said, "Thank you very much," and left the building, Elvis-like.

The press was in full genuflection. And the president-elect was in full control mode. I hope he enjoyed that breathtakingly brief interlude with the press, because he’s not going to be able to get away with it much longer. The press supports him, of course, and they will do their best to protect him. But their job is to "cover" the president, even when that coverage is biased. So they will still need answers from him for their articles and columns and television and radio reports. Taking a question about the family dog and then bolting isn’t going to cut it much longer.

If the media is as protective of him as a security blanket, then why did he jet outta there faster than Michael Moore at a Jenny Craig consultation?

Because he wants to limit his exposure so he doesn’t make any gaffes. The media will allow that now, as part of the honeymoon they want to give him anyway. But in a few weeks, they will expect more. And more. The Anointed One will have to feed the Beast. Or he may be amazed by how quickly the Beast may turn on him. Of all the unwelcome surprises coming his way, that may be the most jarring of all.

I quit watching Mclaughlin quite a long time ago, after reading this article I can see I haven’t been missing much. Dribble and that’s about it.

McLaughlin has definitely taken a step down in the caliber of their panelists.

g c adds to reader interest, “John Lennon was an advocate for peace….” We should blast Islamic murderous lunatics with Beatles music. While we are at it, let’s carpet bomb Russia, Iran, Syria, North Korea and Chicago, Illinois, with Beatles compilation CD albums. This should bring about peace; the Beatles are more popular than Jesus Christ. You are quite naive. There are hundreds of millions of people out there in the world who both want all Western peoples dead and are working at killing all Western peoples, preferably by sawing our heads off. Rather difficult to send a music message of peace to people who ban music. g c continues, “…he would not like your post or your disrespectful undertone referring to our future POTUS as the Black Messiah.” POTUS reads too close to POPE. You are practicing deceit. I did not label Obama the Black Messiah. This label was attached by Americans and by our mainstream media. Obama has been referred to as the Black Messiah by millions for a year or more. Naive and deceitful, yours is not a good combination. As to Beatles music, I like Twist & Shout. I like to shake it up, baby. Imagine that. Okpulot Taha Choctaw Nation

So my views are naive? Naive because I called talk radio host narcissists or perhaps because I said John Lennon was for peace and wouldn’t have backed the war in Iraq? Because those seem like pretty realistic views to me. As for Russia I would say that The Beatles music has been played Back In The USSR for quite some time. I am sure the Beatles have been bootlegged into Iran and Syria at some point. I believe many Iranians were educated right here in the states or Europe. Hmmm, I also think that many of the Iranian public are computer literate. That said however those comments pertain to their people not their government. As for North Korea, it would not surprise me that they wouldn’t know the Beatles since I believe the first joint Symphony performance occurred fairly recently with the New York Symphony I believe. If it wasn’t the New York Symphony someone please correct me because I heard the story several months ago and that it was the first of its kind in N. Korea. Just because one did not back the war in Iraq does not make one naive to the threat of the militant Islamic belief system. It just means some people believe that there was a better way forward then the path that Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld chose for this country. We still have not captured Bin Laden, Afghanistan is a mess. Many warned this would become like Vietnam, looking back was that a naive position, I think not. As a christian I prefer to look back to Genesis where God lays out to Abraham the fact that Isaac and Ishmael will always be warring with each other and Ishmael would also war against himself, did we as arrogant naive Americans think we could change that. that is naive. As far as deceitful, I live in the midwest and I never heard that term used by anyone let alone the media and certainly not by millions of Americans. I think comparing Obama to the Pope very odd, was that meant as an insult to the person or to the institution they represent. I am not a Catholic and do not always agree with them but I find that a curious remark or perhaps I am just to naive to understand your meaning. It took me a long time to make up my mind I was for Hillary and it seems to me you are accusing many of us of just blindly following Barack Obama, to some of us he may not have been our first choice, most of us reevaluated and then chose a candidate who we felt most comfortable with for some that was McCain/Palin for others it was Obama. O T––I find all your comments disturbing. There’s an undertone of rage. And why are you sporting that Groucho Marx paraphernalia? Maybe you, as you said, just like to “shake it up”, but your shaking is scary.

Monica did it again! This piece is of Brutal Greatness, not for an emotional crowd!

Sibelle Daubigne quips, “This piece is of Brutal Greatness, not for an emotional crowd!” How funny! I must confess I did not give much attention to Obama’s words; I knew he would simply vomit up his vague campaign talking points which have no point, not at all. Rather, I paid attention to his ability to memorize names of reporters out there kneeling in their pews before the Black Messiah. I thought, “He is doing great! He did his homework!” Then I noticed Obama cheated; he used a seating chart resting upon his podium. His press conference was totally scripted. This is no fun! There is no challenge, no potential for screwing up. Those reporters are assigned seats. Such a power play! “You ask the wrong questions, back of the bus for you!” When our news media turns on Obama, first three rows will be empty seats and all those reporters will be crowded into the last three rows of seats. They will be challenged to genuflect and kneel in such crowded condtions. Obama did kick some irreverent reporters off his aeroplane, mid-flight, yes? Okpulot Taha Choctaw Nation
