Emmy Awards and Glenn Close Prove That 40+ Women Are Winning in the New Hollywood

Despite the youth obsession among many in the entertainment industry, a preponderance of last night’s 2008 Emmy Award statuettes went to actresses representing Hollywood’s surprising new power group: the 40+ woman.

As wowOwow’s Liz Smith previously reported, women 40+ dominated the pool of Emmy-nominated actresses. And at last night’s ceremony, many of them walked away with the gold in the key performance award categories:

Glenn Close, 61, won for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Patty Hewes in the FX Network’s "Damages." In her acceptance speech, Close took note of the many 40+ female nominees and winners this year by saying, "I think we’re proving complicated, powerful, mature women are sexy, high entertainment and can carry a show. I call us the sisterhood of the TV drama divas."

Dianne Wiest, 60, won for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series as Dr. Gina Toll in HBO’s "In Treatment."

Jean Smart, 57, won for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Regina Newly in the ABC’s "Samantha Who?"

Laura Linney, 44, won for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie for her role as Abigail Adams in HBO’s "John Adams."

Dame Eileen Atkins, 74, won for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie for her role as Miss Deborah Jenkyns in PBS’s "Cranford."

The only actress under 40 to win a major performance award was Tina Fey, 38, for her role as Liz Lemon in NBC’s "30 Rock."

Vivvy LOL. What has happened to all of the good writers? An awards show is not that hard.

No kidding. Why not take a chance next year and let us write it? Hell, it certainly couldn’t be any worse!

WowOwow, the reality show. A bunch of anonymous avatars in a boxing ring throwing verbs and nouns at one another.

Vivy, I’m scheduled for my mammo this Thursday and will now think of it as a great TV event compared to last night’s show. I think I kept watching hoping it would only get better. Bring back Ellen DeGeneres as host!!!

Ah crap, I didn’t even know Dianne Wiest was NOMINATED, or that Lily Tomlin was going to be on. Those are reasons enough to sit through excruciating Hollywood ego-stroking B.S. award shows…

I’ve had this thought cross my mind quite a bit over the last year or so …….. Are women 40+ becoming popular? The new “it” thing? Could it really be true that we’ve finally gotten our point across? That we, 40+ women have stopped looking around for approval? That our confident-selves have emerged with the aura of “We don’t need to look back anymore, that we are taking our “place mat” and putting it anywhere “we” want it? Hooray for Us!

All award shows have the problem of going on too long, however - it is GREAT to see women of substance and talent recognized for years of great work. All these women deserved the nods they got.

Without doubt the most amateurish and awful production of an awards show I’ve ever seen. The borax visual graphics looked like left over ads from the 50’s designed by someone with no talent whatsoever. The production numbers were a premier embarrasment. MCeeing…likewise. Whoever produced this awful show should be drummed off TV. This was a disaster and the Emmy’s need a new President.

Forgot to mention the totally tastless and sexist remarks as Brooke Sheilds had to tolerate her co-presenter talking about putting his hands on her ass. Disgusting. This is supposed to be funny?

Bad writing is not the answer. You know there a script is worse when it’s not “played right”. There were actors on the stage, why did they not try to make the words sound like they meant it. Perhaps it would have been a better diliverance to the audience. I thought: You are actors, … act! That would perhaps have saved the show, which had terribly written gags, there I agree. But as someone mentioned before, most who saw it were laughing about Candice’s text, no doubt that was written for her too, but she made it sound like it were her own words and that’s the difference.

How perfectly marvelous that the TV writers are finally writing roles for women that are award-worthy. Then of course it takes the right babe of certain years to make those words jump off the page and onto the Emmy stage in a nice dress. And yes. MTM needs to wear sleeves. Its just too much information.
