Will Biden Wear a Tie? Will Palin Wear a Dress? Their Style Experts Prepare for Tonight's Debate

Editor’s Note:  Introducing The Etceterist, the byline for the new style-world infiltrator for wowOwow.com, who will post deliciously anonymous weekly musings vis-à-vis the glamorous goings-on in the worlds of fashion and culture. Who is The Etceterist? Some may guess, but we prefer to stay silent, except to pronounce that there is no more inside insider in the worlds of art, beauty, society and culture.

Go ahead and think clothes don’t make the candidate. That is just what the advisers and style consultants preparing Sarah Palin and Joe Biden for their big debate want you to believe — their candidates are all substance over style and they will just roll out of bed Thursday morning orating.

But we know better than that. No thread or hem, no hair or freckle, will be overlooked before the vice-presidential candidates go live.

Here are some of the styling concerns and considerations happening behind the scenes.

Because Biden can come across as flip, aggressive and loose lipped, everything is being done to give the candidate a tidy, tailored look from the fit of his suit jacket to trimming his hair and making sure it looks thick, virile and substantial and not fussy à la Donald Trump.

A tie or not a tie?

Should Biden continue his penchant for campaigning without one, loosening up, proving that he is just another guy after work on the train home? Or should he wear a tie to connote authority and experience? But how wide and what color? Too wide, is too gauche, too narrow is too untrustworthy. Blue is for the Democrats, but what shade of blue? Is blue lavender too cool? Is blue silver too elitist? Will navy look black and inanimate on TV? How about a blue and silver stripe? Too jaunty? Why not red? Do the Republicans really own red? Rosy tones go great with his skin color, very invigorating.

Consultants have their work cut out for them, laying in the options.

Dressing Sarah Palin is even more complicated. First off, care must be taken that should the provenance be discovered of her suit or dress — yes, there is some talk she might wear a dress à la Michelle Obama — it cannot trace back to a pricey designer or store. (Is campaigning a man’s world? Somehow, no one ever cares who made the man’s suit or tallies how much it cost along with his wallet and watch.)

Click here to read Palin-tology: Sarah Palin’s Fashion Progress From Pink to Power Suits.

If not a dress, then should Palin’s suit be a solid color or two-toned, the jacket contrasting with the skirt? (Palin likes two-toned.) The black suit she wore in New York was her best ambassadorial, grown-up look yet, but black on TV might be a downer, but also might be worth the risk if she looks sharp and confident. Red being the Republicans’ color and also the color of love and the heart, it is a likely choice. Party powers that be are playing Palin as the sweetheart. So the search is on for the perfect red — not easy, books have been written about finding the perfect red — a shade that is not likely to burn orange on a color television not correctly tuned, but something rich and hearty.

Puleeeeez! The rest of the world is laughing at us for paying attention to the very concerns that you are highlighting.

America buys what it’s sold. It was true yesterday, it’s true today, and it will probably be true tomorrow. It is disgusting that we choose our presidents on much the same basis as we choose our laundry detergent. When a candidate believes in their “message” and are fierce to communicate it, they’re willing to use any number of marketing tactics…just to get our attention. It’s up to us to listen, to look past the packaging, the cosmetic facade, and listen! And then find a transcript and read it! Understand that this is a critical election, and our decision must be based on the stated intentions of our candidates. That’s the best we can hope for. It may be easier to tune out the marketing ploys once we’re aware of them, but too often they’re so obvious we start debating the packaging and not the substance. All I know is I don’t want to buy a box of laundry detergent that won’t get the job done, and be forced to use it…while my clothes become increasing drab, for the next FOUR YEARS. ESPECIALLY, when they’ve got $700b to help keep their eyes on. If I understand Obama correctly, and IF he’s true to his word once he’s elected (and I’m confident that he will be elected) America’s tax burden will shift to the wealthy. I doubt that we’ll see any criminal prosecution, but heads will roll all over Wall Street. Big Business may be willing to tolerate a whole lot of arrogance, they’re happy to finance a war or package a candidate, but they won’t put up with any business practice that ends up costing them money.

Will Palin wear a tie? Will Biden wear a dress? I suspect he’s got great legs.

Now that might make it more equal and get us out of what we are expecting.

Red and Black is ‘power’, right? But Palin is overwhelming to begin with—-wouldn’t they want to tone down her glare, a bit, so that people won’t be afraid to listen to her?

Jane, Your idea is the best. I might watch that, maybe. They will be hgihly scripted as to what they say, so it all is fairly over with now. And what Sam says is also right on the money. Maybe we need to decide what is important. Ps

I happen to love fashion as much as the next gal. But this is one of the most insipid things I have ever read on this site.

Palin in a little girl’s pink chiffon party dress and a big pink bow to highlight her purpose on the McCain ticket. Biden in a straight-jacket to highlight how little room for error the media will give him.

Hey DeB…see below a bit…maybe we should find out who the candidates were in past lives…or has that also been explored here when we were off the grid for nine days after Ike’s big windstorm? I so-o-o-o can’t keep up….As totally silly and mindless as this is, it’s not bad to have a default post when the going gets rough elsewhere….I’m keeping my ear to the ground for the latest neighborhood malapropism to send you….Enjoy the evening

I’ll tell you a secret… posting in here is a life saver for me! It helps me vent all my political opinions and frustrations without driving my friends and family nuts!! It’s medicinal!

DeB, No matter what he wears, no matter what he says, he’s sunk. I bet the McCain people already have the TV ads ready to beat him up. If he is assertive on any level, he will be anti-feminist. If he is polite to her, he will be patronising and condescending. If he is just plain Joe Biden, he will be called a smart-ass. She will throw the word liberal into every sentence, and try to turn Obama into a pinko, commie left-winger, and look appropriately cute, and the public will love her and call him a big bully. I have heard some of her debates, and she does what all of those TV talkers do—she doesn’t stop talking and interrupts constantly.

Diana… he was excellent don’t you think? I can’t think of a single thing Biden should have done differently. And she didn’t implode, which I didn’t think she would anyway… but she didn’t answer a single question, she played the “folksy mom” card way too much… AND she even compared how she would work as VP with CHENEY ! Cheney! I couldn’t believe that. No, she didn’t do a thing to win over any voters McCain didn’t already have. She was PTA secretary tonight… not even PTA president because the PTA president never would have winked and said “betcha” so much! I’ll bet she is just so relieved that it’s over.

DeB, If the McCain/Palin ticket is elected, the first order of business will be to get Gov. Palin to a speech teacher. I got so tired of the betcha-gothca language. Perhaps, that is the Alaskan dialect, but she does not pronounce her r’s. But, as I said to someone else, she did very well, and proved to me what I had suspected—-she is an artist at saying lots of words, but not making a statement. She obviously learned that if you don’t know the answer, change the subject. From what I am hearing(I hope you saw Charlie Rose), this won’t affect the election one way or the other, because there is so much taking place in the news.
