The Etceterist: Go For It, Sarah Palin!

Revelations that the Republican National Committee has spent some $150,000 on dressing up the governor of Alaska for the campaign trail could be a wonderful thing for the world of fashion, specifically American fashion, especially at a time when consumer confidence is waning.

Compared to the French (no one in Paris is giving Carla Bruni a hard time for dressing the role of First Lady in the local couture) or even the British, Americans maintain a very ambiguous relationship to fashion. We want it, we revere it on reality shows, we insist our celebrities dress well — hence the success we are reminded of this week in the obituaries of Richard Blackwell and his annual Worst-Dressed List — but if you are found out to actually spend money on fashion, style or grooming, such as John Edwards’s pricey haircuts or Cindy McCain’s earrings or way back to Jackie Kennedy’s Cassini frocks, we attack the person for being wasteful and superficial. Basically, you are vilified.

Now how the hell are retailers expected to move the merch with this attitude? This is a very tired point of view, hypocritical to its roots in a capitalistic system where, at least in Manhattan, the fashion business is the No. 2 revenue producer for the city, second only to finance. (Probably, now No. 1 given the failures of finance.)

So, go Sarah, go! Instead of shrinking, lying, deflecting, come out of the closet and, yes, yes, yes, declare it: "I am a fashionista in a recessionista world! I am a proud wearer of good clothing! I wake up thinking of shoes. I get my hair done, my nails, my makeup … I read Vogue! I was in Vogue

"Clothes make the man and fashion the woman. And I do this for you, America! Anymore than I would wave a threadbare flag on the campaign trail would I shake it in a muumuu from Mervyn’s."

And better dress departments from sea to shining sea will thank you, Sarah Palin, for coming, so to speak, out of the closet.

Uber conservative columnist, Kathleen Parker had a lot to say today about the Palin/McCain “side show”: ” ‘Palling around with terrorists,’ as Sarah Palin said of Obama, gets to an underlying xenophobic, anti-Muslim sentiment. Using surrogates who use Obama’s middle name, Hussein, feeds the same dark heart. This tactic, denied but undeniable, has been effective with target audiences, some of whom can be viewed on YouTube entering a Palin rally in Pennsylvania. One cherubic older fellow totes a stuffed Curious George monkey wearing an Obama sticker as a hat. “This is little Hussein,” he says, holding the monkey up to the camera and cackling as he walks away. To McCain’s credit, he has tried to correct his audience—when, for example, a woman said she couldn’t trust Obama because he’s an Arab. Gosh, wonder where she ever got that idea? But the McCain-Palin bad cop-good cop routine is what it is. The hot babe lathers the crowd; the noble soldier hoses them down. This isn’t a campaign; it’s a sideshow.”

Speaking of the palin/mccain sideshow, here is an interesting piece of information: “Another GOP Senator Decries Ayers Robocalls” http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/22/another-gop-senator-decri_n_136…

I am guessing that most hockey moms or the wives of all the Joe Sixpacks out there don’t shop at Neimann Marcus! This just goes to show you what hyprocrites Republicans have become. Why doesn’t she just wear her normal clothes, Joe Biden does!!

You’re right, Michelle Obama has substance behind her grace. I’m sure Bruni is a nice enough woman, but not in the same league as Michelle Obama.

I think this was a mistake but to put it into perspective, Cindy McCains outfit the first night of the convention reportedly cost twice more than what was spent on Sarah Palins wardrobe, so perhaps John McCains perception on what clothes should cost is a little skewed. Not to mention with the economy in the tank they got some really good sales I bet. Do you think John McCain has ever questioned Cindy on her clothing expenditures or even has a clue. I believe with people losing their jobs this is sensitive subject. I don’t see eye to eye with Sarah Palin on most issues but I assume she just went along with what the advisers told her to do. She is a novice at this obviously. I don’t think that is her normal mode of operation, to shop at stores like Saks, she has 5 kids and that is expensive these days, she is not an heiress but a working mom. I figure that she and her husband are more like the Obama’s in that they have a better idea about what things cost in todays world, not just in theory, meaning they know what eggs, a gallon of milk or gas or a Happy meal costs I don’t think John McCain does. So she’s a novice, he’s not but he still didn’t know any better. Brilliant!!!!

I don’t think anyone questions that the normal “hockey mom” would have to get new clothes to campaign for national office. I believe the question is whether you need to buy Versace and Manolo’s. I believe you can achieve the same effect with much less money. Just because the money came from donors doesn’t mean you have to buy over-the-top expensive. Did you know she was walking around in $800 shoes?

Oh Barbara… they’re just putting into practice their party’s love affair with “Trickle Down Economics”.

DeBurca Trickle down economics? I think it is very obvious that Obama has benefited from trickle down. He has received so many contributions from the rich it is amazing. Get real. How can anyone hide behind all those ridiculous slogans anymore. You have got to be kidding? He is the greatest benefactor from trickle down. It hasn’t trickled down to me, he must have gotten the majority of it.

He has receive so many contributions from average Americans like me. I’ve contributed my little $25 about 6 times and the majority of his contributions have come from people like me giving what they can over and over. I’ll tell you how it will trickle down to you, if Obama gets in you get to benefit from his presidency whether you voted for him or not.
