The Etceterist: Go For It, Sarah Palin!

Revelations that the Republican National Committee has spent some $150,000 on dressing up the governor of Alaska for the campaign trail could be a wonderful thing for the world of fashion, specifically American fashion, especially at a time when consumer confidence is waning.

Compared to the French (no one in Paris is giving Carla Bruni a hard time for dressing the role of First Lady in the local couture) or even the British, Americans maintain a very ambiguous relationship to fashion. We want it, we revere it on reality shows, we insist our celebrities dress well — hence the success we are reminded of this week in the obituaries of Richard Blackwell and his annual Worst-Dressed List — but if you are found out to actually spend money on fashion, style or grooming, such as John Edwards’s pricey haircuts or Cindy McCain’s earrings or way back to Jackie Kennedy’s Cassini frocks, we attack the person for being wasteful and superficial. Basically, you are vilified.

Now how the hell are retailers expected to move the merch with this attitude? This is a very tired point of view, hypocritical to its roots in a capitalistic system where, at least in Manhattan, the fashion business is the No. 2 revenue producer for the city, second only to finance. (Probably, now No. 1 given the failures of finance.)

So, go Sarah, go! Instead of shrinking, lying, deflecting, come out of the closet and, yes, yes, yes, declare it: "I am a fashionista in a recessionista world! I am a proud wearer of good clothing! I wake up thinking of shoes. I get my hair done, my nails, my makeup … I read Vogue! I was in Vogue

"Clothes make the man and fashion the woman. And I do this for you, America! Anymore than I would wave a threadbare flag on the campaign trail would I shake it in a muumuu from Mervyn’s."

And better dress departments from sea to shining sea will thank you, Sarah Palin, for coming, so to speak, out of the closet.

Frannie, Speaking of Obama and “trickle down economics” here is a book you may be interested in: Obamanomics: How Bottom-Up Economic Prosperity Will Replace Trickle-Down Economics by John R. Talbott

DeBurca Thanks for the book title, will take a look at it. Problem is, after the Frank and Dodd and Raines and other dems whom I used to respect, have precipitated the the destruction of our financial system, there isn’t going to be a very big budget. Tax revenues are down and will be down until we generate more jobs. Pres Clinton won against Pres Bush 1 by saying he would not raise taxes, well he did come in and raise taxes on the middle class. Everyone seems to forget that. (He then gradually lowered them) It hurt our business. Good old Paul Krugman took a math formula and figured out just how much small business could be taxed and maybe stay alive. Many businesses like ours went out of business, we barely hung on, but developed a custom building business that was specialized and it caught on and we survived. The Clinton years were not very good on us, or others. We had to take on debt, but survived. They had to lower the deficit. I agree it was important and they did it. The budget didn’t get balanced until Newt Gingrich’s Contract with America, when the Republicans took a majority in the house and that is when they finally balanced the budget. It took both parties to get it done, they balanced each other. The idea of checks and balances was the most important aspect of our Constitution, it was meant to keep people honest. Now it is such a power grab no one worries about the importance of balance in our system. The point I want to make is that whoever becomes President, there isn’t going to be much budget to work with. If the financial situation gets worse, they will probably have to raise taxes. 40% of households do not pay fed income tax (when Bush 1 raised our taxes he lowered others). 1% of population pays 15% of all the income taxes paid into the fed govt (I have heard reports of them paying as much as 45% of all of taxes collected, but I went with the lowest number), and the middle class pays the rest. Every program that Obama has talked about initiating is going to be tough to do. I don’t know what the answer is. Our financial institutions are changing as we speak. I don’t think they know what the answer is either.

You know, Barbara, the GOP could’ve underscored and galvanized her “everywoman” persona — made her the ultimate Recessionista, if you will — if they’d done exactly what you offered: dressed her impeccably but off the rack. Instead, she’s now coming off like Marie Antoinette during the Reign of Terror.

Barbara Obama has paid over $10,300,000 to media groups like Daily Kos and Media Matters, those bloggers go out and crash sites and start crude lies, and you are worried about $800 shoes. What about an honest democratic process? The tactics those media outlets employ totally pollute an already corrupted campaign process. I am sorry, but I can’t vote for him now. I kept waiting to see if I could pull the lever for him, but that news just turns my stomach. With that machine around him, we are in for much worse. I thought the repubs were lousy with that stuff, but the dems have them beat hands down. They have really sunk low. Look at your party, and you are worried about shoes? I can’t believe how it all gets washed over by you guys and flimsy tit for tat to cover up huge inconsistencies in the behavior of the campaign machine. They are going to change government, how can they? Everybody owns them so they can buy the White House and I don’t see 60 Minutes or Meet The Press, or anything. They have created their own separate government that has gotten a pass from the press. Amazing.

Me again Frannie, I see you are quoting Ms. C’s “information,” and have some additional observations about crashing sites, etc. As mentioned on the previous page, I am eagerly awaiting your assistance in identifying sources. Thanks in advance.

Countrywoman Have you looked up all of the sources or asked for sources on all the info that you state or agree with that could be lies about repubs? I doubt it. Have you asked for sources about Palin or McCain to find out if someone is lying? From most posters I see agreement and then throw in a dose of “I can’t stand them either for those reasons. Oh yeah, don’t forget this evil thing as well!” Or something like that. You say you don’t believe everything, and you know talking heads are asses, but do you only want to have repubs or indies to site what you don’t agree with? If we want fairness, then it would seem to me we would also have to have others site their sources regarding negative postings about the repubs. If you want to raise the standard of discourse, then you have to emulate or be the higher standard, or ask everyone where they got their source. I have seen sources posted that were just opinion pieces that were taken as gospel. Not hard journalism pieces (although there are some of those as well), but mostly opinion pieces. The internet is full of information, you have to take many articles apart, chase sources and data they have used and see what it means. I read an article that someone posted and it had several linked sidebars, and all of the sidebars (I think there were 6) were washed over corrections of what he had stated in his article. I think it was from Slate, which I enjoy, but I took the time to look up the articles he quoted and he had so blatantly misquoted to “fit” what he wanted to say, it was ridiculous, hence he had many people rebuttal it and he had to correct it. It was obvious the person who posted the article as a source hadn’t read everything. After the Jason Blair article, the Reuters setting up posed shots in Iraq, the AP touching up smoke in photos to make them look worse, and the Dan Rather debacle I think we are all a little wary. When I read what Marjorie had posted, I wondered about source, but was also disappointed in the fact that fellow citizens just take it for fact that Obama is raising all of that money in $100 or less amounts when he had received over a hundred thousand from fannie and freddie and no one was questioning it, (in fact, I think it was closer to the $200,000 mark) or where big money was coming from and where it was going. You don’t think Michelle doesn’t have a stylist paid for by the campaign. I doubt if she has paid as much as the McCain campaign, but it has long been considered a campaign expense because they are on the trail. Obama raised $150 million in September, you know that is not just small amounts from citizens. Where is is tall coming from? For either campaign. That is a legitimate question to ask. Crashers of sites are what our friend Suzanne does at times. Jump in and post everywhere they can to destroy any conversations of an opposing viewpoint. They will interject posts in may places and slam people in order to upset the flow of a site and get people mad. It happens on many sites. We get some at times Sometimes they come looking, and other times they are linked. Yes the other other one that actually crash sites are the clever ones. How about the congressman’s son that got into Palin’s email account? Some people made fun of what was on there and tried to make a big ta do about it, instead of the fact that someone had broken into her private account. So go figure. I think that is why Marjorie is upset.

Yikes Frannie….I thought we had this all squared away, and am a bit confused about the timing of this message to me. I have no illusions that I would be able to research and address these issues even if I had the inclination to do so. I stopped and posted a response to you when you reacted to Marjorie’s statistics with a statement that learning what she wrote made you feel “naive.” I always read what you write here. I have often posted a reply in agreement with your comments. In my estimation, yours is one of the rarest voices at Wow because you look at things from both sides and have a knack for boiling it all down to a logical bottom line, or exposing a folly on one side or the other. I do not attempt to verify everything I read here, but I did make an effort to verify those ever-so-specific statistics. (Statistics do not belong under the umbrella of “opinion.”) If you had posted that information, I’m positive you would have either cited your source, or been happy to provide it when asked. As of right now, the person who DID post the stuff has not, for whatever reason, accommodated your request for her source. I do not believe that being “upset” is a valid reason to disseminate misinformation, although Marjorie obviously does not agree. (“One good lie deserves another.”) Obviously we all just view this differently. Hope we are okay Frannie. I plan to continue reading and learning from your contributions here. Peas and parse-ly

Countrywoman We are okay, I like you very much and I appreciate your kind comments. I understand your point about why you took issue with that particular post. I realized later the time difference in our postings. I was tired, which is never a good time for me to post. I think you got my point, we can’t all look up everything, everyday all the time. I still question where all the money is coming from for both campaigns. Remember the good old days when a candidate had money coming in and every reporter would be on it to discover what is going on. It isn’t happening now. Everyone just accepts the “from $100” donor thing, when that is not so. Obama got $225,000 a long time ago from the Nuclear Power industry, where is the reporting on that. Does it mean he is owes them anything? I am sure there are many sources McCain’s money that need to be looked at, but if they look at McCain’s then they have to look at Obama’s. So the male dominated media picks on Palin instead. Now don’t get me wrong, she has brought a lot of it down on herself. She is not very polished. I saw a report tonight that the shopping for the clothes was done around the time of the convention, many she returned, but others she hung on to which she will donate. Whatever, but it really pales in comparison of the $150,000,000 that Obama received in September. I don’t know, but I heard some of it came from overseas. Those could have been small donations, but how do we know. My point is, reporters are not reporting on where the money comes from, millions and millions of dollars, but they jump on the woman and her clothes. They know that what some woman is wearing is always controversial to the American public. So don’t you think there is a dumbing down in this area? I think I will just start looking more things up myself, which I should have done in the first place, you are right, I should have. Factcheck.org is not a bipartisan run organization, it is run by democrats. I have seen the main particulars on TV (was it larry king?). He asked them questions about Palin, they were pretty fair about facts, but left each question answered about her in a negative tone. I don’t like that kind of stuff. I like fairness. If we truly want things to change then we have to personally change, and as that collective whole grows, the world will change. It is crucial for our society, I truly believe that. Stand on the same principle for everyone, that is what makes a difference.

Palin’s contradictions never surprise me. This clothes thing reveals her as a phoney “hockey mom”, “I’m one of You”. Exactly who is this “You” she refers to.

Andromeda, the “You” she is referring to is anyone stupid enough to buy into her line of you-know-what.

When Michelle Obama was speaking in Pensacola Tuesday, she had a simple skirt and jacket with a little shell under it and flats. It looked an outfit she usually wore to work. Nothing flashy or pretentious about her at all. And someone above was talking about how all the First Ladies dressed up. Yes they did. But Sarah Palin isn’t running for First Lady, is she?
