In Expected Move, Obama Moves to Lift Bush's 'Conscience' Rule

Women’s groups are hailing the Obama administration’s reported decision to roll back Bush-era protections for health-care workers who refuse to provide services because of moral objections.

"We heartily commend the Obama administration for recognizing this rule for what it is: a targeted attack on women’s health and rights. Rescinding this harmful rule is a step back from the precipice; women across the country will be able to breathe easier once their right to information and needed services has been fully restored," said Marcia D. Greenberger, co-president of the National Women’s Law Center.

The Bush administration regulation allowed federal funding to be cut off to any health-care facility that didn’t let doctors or nurses opt out of procedures — including abortion — to which they objected, or which were against their religious beliefs. Government officials told The Washington Post today that they’re reviewing a proposal to get rid of the regulation. Officials said the way it’s worded now is too broad and could restrict women from getting vital services. Family-planning groups have said it could even stretch to not giving women contraceptives. The Los Angeles Times notes that seven states and two family-planning groups have filed lawsuits against the regulation.

"We support a tightly written conscience clause. We recognize and understand that some providers have objections about abortion, and we want to make sure that current law protects them," a Health and Human Services official told the Post. "We want to be thoughtful about this."

But the Christian Medical Association argues there’s no confusion about the rule, and that rescinding it is what puts women’s health at risk, "threatens health-care professionals’ freedom to practice medicine according to ethical standards and exposes the myth of moderation in Obama’s abortion policy."

It even goes as far to say that health-care workers serving some of the nation’s poorest populations could be adversely affected by the rule. "Infringing on their right to practice medicine according to these life-affirming ethical standards will force them to leave the profession and to shut down the hospitals and clinics," said the association’s CEO, David Stevens.

The debate over this controversial topic undoubtedly will heat up over the next month or so. We’ll keep you posted on all the developments!

you wont respond then either freda

you have access to the internet just as well as I do…. if you really want the information you can find it.

Personally, I would like there to be no more abortions…. birth control should be easily accessed and taught in schools on how they are used, as well as taught the dangers of having sex, teach teenagers the reasos why they should wait until they are older.

But I dont have the right, and neither do you, to demand that any other person hold the same views that I hold. Each individual person has the right to decide that for themselves…… denying health care is not helping anyone.

You dont have answers to my questions…. you would rather repeat things that others have told you.

It is a simple question…..  how long do you thik that a woman should go to jail for having an abortion?

it isnt a meaningless hypothetical question…..

You want abortion to be illegal…. if it is illegal, women that have an abortion will be breaking the law….. so how long should a woman go to jail for ending a pregnancy?

You cant DEMAND a law with no punishments.

Neither meaningless or hypothetical. Why don’t you try to answer the question?

I can’t see any woman wanting medical care professionals to perform a procedure on her against their will. He!!, I’d stay as far away from them as possible. Wouldn’t you? No, the fact that women will be able to get all ALL the information necessary to make a decision for herself about her own life and body is the key for me. This is a good thing.

We, as women, have climbed another hill to freedom.  Hopefully, some day we will have complete freedom.  At least, Obama is walking in the best direction for women and their control of their bodies.

Lets not forget here….. Catholic hospitals used this "rule" quite well.

Catholic hospitals refused to give rape victims the "morning after" pill….. They gave a press release that basically said, if you dont like our policy, go to a different hospital.

And I would think they will still be able to do that, but not if they want public funding (I think, not sure how that works).

And Roger, that is their policy!  It should be their right.  This is not a State hospital — it is my understanding that they will still have that right!  Even if they receive public funding!

If they cant help everyone, then they should get out of the health care business.

you dont tell a rape victim to go somewhere else…. I doubt any rape victim will want to deal with a pregnancy from their attack….. and when the first "concern" by the hostpital is making sure that if her egg got fertilized, then the woman MUST have that child.

That is just sick, and I have no idea why any woman would agree with that "policy"

Glad to hear the President is rescinding the rule.  When we choose professions we are well aware of the requirements.  Religion is not part of deciding on many careers.  If so then those individuals should only go into professions that agree their beliefs.

Many of us are Christians, however there are those who simply don’t understand that the most important thing that we want in this life is eternal life with God the Father.  He made it a CHOICE.  He is not forcing us we must choose him.  As a result everything in life is a choice because God is the ultimate DECIDER.

Those choices are between the person and GOd the Father because any consequences are on them. not the general public.

It’s amazing to me that many claim to be Christians however, forget the primary CHOICE they have been given the most important one in this life.  Yet they still try to make decisions for others.  They cannot interceed for the person with GOD, it’s between each of us and GOd.  These are personal relationships.

Christian, Yes I am and I wished those who love to make choices for others would actually get this part of Bibical teachings.I might disagree with your choices but I don’t have the right to make them for you.

Only for our children as they grow because that is a Bibical teaching as well.

Lavern,

If you agree with a womans right to have an abortion…..You are soooo not a Christian! A wanna be maybe but honey, you aint there yet, Sorry. There is to much in your post that is just plain Wrong. And as for intercessory prayer for another, It is real. if you were a Christian as you claim, that would be one of the most basic of fundamentals…You got that wrong also. If you want eternal life with God, I suggest you start getting yourself right with him cuz as it stands you’re headed down the opposite road with these false beliefs you’re putting out there.

Elaine…A Big Amen to your post…these people that talk that way want the Bible to say what ever they want it say…If they really read it they will find that Abortion is Murder…no amount of twisting the facts in the Bible will change that…there are going to be alot of those type of Christians that are going to find when judgement day comes that they may not make it into heaven!!

Hi Robert,

Thanks, I hate when people profess to be Christians and then all they spew is secular nonsense, You CANNOT call yourself a Christian and agree in any way shape or form, that abortion is ever OK to do….It’s impossible period! Thank you Robert for you being a wonderful person that states the truth.
