Fallen Patriots: A wowOwow Salute to 110 Fallen Female Soldiers

No matter where you come down on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, there is no debate about our country’s devotion and gratitude to the men and women who have lost their lives in service to America.

This Fourth of July, the Women on the Web takes a moment for a solemn salute to the ultimate wowOwow women: the 110 female soldiers who have lost their lives in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. Our hearts go out to their families and friends, and we stand humbled by and proud of a nation and a culture able to produce daughters so brave and so honorable.

This Fourth of July, the Women on the Web takes a moment for a solemn salute to the ultimate wowOwow women.

The number of fallen women in today’s conflicts outstrips the female death toll in the Korean, Vietnam and Desert Storm confilcts combined.  According to the Women in Military Service for America Memorial Foundation, eight women died in the line of duty in Vietnam and 16 died during Desert Storm in Kuwait. Today, women make up 15 percent of America’s active duty forces and, as a result, the death toll among women soldiers has significantly climbed to where it stands today, July 2, 2008, at 110.

These are the true daughters of the American revolution, the revolution that has allowed women to shatter glass ceilings in all walks of life … even when the consequence is heartbreaking.

There always young, Carol—you don’t see old men who make wars dying in them. Maybe if we did there’d be one helluva lot less wars.

frank…amen…i know you probably dont want to hear this, but you are truly in touch with something besides your MACHISMO side…take care….

I do not and have never had machismo except when I was an idiot teenie-bopper. Frankly I loathe the concept. Makes me want to toss my cookies. Only idiots, and supposed “bad” boys think they have it and frankly none of them are worth a hoot in hell to begin with. Otherwise thank you, Ms. Rose :-)

Frannie, Where on earth did I ever state they did not woant to be in combat?? Because the military is so over-extended, some are put on duty they were NOT trained for properly. That’s all I said.

Carol, I wasn’t talking about that. I was just telling you some of the jobs they had that got them killed. They get a lot of training. Some take to it better than others. They also go over there and everything changes, so the have to shift midstream in tasks.

And I fully understand that as I am sure you understand what I was saying. Also did you understand how I feel about our troops in Afghanistan being killed because they don’t have enough manpower? And only now Bush is “considering” sending help. That I will support. btw, glad to hear your son is returning again. I was under the impression he came back awhile ago. Is he here to stay for good now, or will he be returning.

We can’t ever forget the soldiers. It reminds me of a row of graves behind my grandmother’s grave in a cemetery in Belgium, my mother taught me to always go and pray for these special hero’s. The ones who liberated us in WW2. In Ypres, a memorial stands and is being honored every day and that was from WW1. Every evening since 1928, traffic around the imposing arches of the Menin Gate Memorial has been stopped while the Last Post is sounded beneath the Gate by the local fire brigade. This tribute is given in honor of the memory of British Empire soldiers who fought and died there. During WW2 this ceremony was , of course, not allowed. I absolutely detest the wars going on now but I pray every day for these brave soldiers . When will it ever end?

Wnen will it end? To quote a poet I’m very fond of who died in Vietnam: And in that time when men decide and feel safe to call the war insane, take one moment to embrace those gentle heroes you left behind. That’s when it will end. god I hope so.

Having had a Fiance’ who fought in Iraq back in 2003 and my Boss who fought in Iraq in 2004…This subject is near & dear to me. It is awful that anyone of our Soldier’s don’t return. I ask GOD everyday to bring our men and women home from this war and for those lost that he gives their family strength to get through the dark…Thank you for this Special Salute!

Who among us cannot weep for these women….fallen members of our military? There is no shame in feeling sorrow nor is there shame in feeling proud that these women were in the military because that is where they wanted to be. Of course, they did not choose to die but they did choose to defend America to the best of their abilities and that included the right to participate in combat. These precious women did not die in a needless cause. They did not die in vain for a vainglorious president. They died for America. They died in the attempt to keep the war on terror off our shores and out of our cities and away from lonely meadows in Pennsylvania. They believed that, I do believe it and their families will forever be able to honor their choice as they mourn their loss.

Bonnie - Amen. I am safer because these young women heroically put their lives at risk.

bonnie, they DID “die in vain for a vainglorious president.” they were useless deaths. they were people thrown away by this president who said his favorite philosopher was jesus, but who would never read what jesus said. he threw them away because they were toy soldiers to him.
