Fallen Patriots: A wowOwow Salute to 110 Fallen Female Soldiers

No matter where you come down on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, there is no debate about our country’s devotion and gratitude to the men and women who have lost their lives in service to America.

This Fourth of July, the Women on the Web takes a moment for a solemn salute to the ultimate wowOwow women: the 110 female soldiers who have lost their lives in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. Our hearts go out to their families and friends, and we stand humbled by and proud of a nation and a culture able to produce daughters so brave and so honorable.

This Fourth of July, the Women on the Web takes a moment for a solemn salute to the ultimate wowOwow women.

The number of fallen women in today’s conflicts outstrips the female death toll in the Korean, Vietnam and Desert Storm confilcts combined.  According to the Women in Military Service for America Memorial Foundation, eight women died in the line of duty in Vietnam and 16 died during Desert Storm in Kuwait. Today, women make up 15 percent of America’s active duty forces and, as a result, the death toll among women soldiers has significantly climbed to where it stands today, July 2, 2008, at 110.

These are the true daughters of the American revolution, the revolution that has allowed women to shatter glass ceilings in all walks of life … even when the consequence is heartbreaking.

Mary Lou - you may think as you please. It is so easy to voice disagreement when a nation goes to war and young Americans die. So many of you have picked out a person on whom you want to dump all your hatred and that person is the President. So be it. I, however, will stand by the GIs who are appalled at the news reports they see back here; who are unable to understand why so many Americans are not aware of their successes and progresses. Why not, indeed? So you claim those that died did so uselessly. Do you think that they would agree with you? What do you think they and their comrades and their families think of you when they hear those words “useless deaths”. And the GIS do align themselves with the President and not with the dissidents, not with you. You have every right to your opinion, you have every right to condemn the war and you have every right to call fallen Americans “useless deaths”. I am just sorry that you felt compelled to do so.

That was tough to watch. All those beautiful faces and wonderful women who had the courage to face such dangers. It was so hard to watch. It helped me because I have had to “hold the line” within me regarding my son being over there, and I didn’t cry over that. Many times I was frustrated and frightened, so the pictures just help me let it all flow. I am so sorry for their families. They were beautiful.

Wonderfully said Cherokee, Bonnie O, and Frannie Em too. Even those of us who didn’t support the invasion, DO care very much about the troops which is why we fought sending them over. They are heroes, every one. And thoughts and prayers definitely with them and their families. Wars would end the day those voting for them had to go too.

Wars would end if the leaders of countries would have to stand up alone…one on one and duke it out.

Cherokee Rose, Now I see why you took so much exception to Klein’s comments. I thank your daughter for her service. She is one of my heroes too.

I can’t look—I tried—I saw the first 3 faces and I just can’t do it. Just like I can’t go to that Wall in DC. Too much pain. Too much.

Frank, It is painful. Mainly because they are fighting the wrong war. Iraq was never a threat. Iraq did not plan the attack on the WTC. However, the real threat, Afghanistan, has not had the military support needed and both the Taliban and Al-Qaeda are on the rise killing Americans daily. And what is our vainglorious leader doing—he is “considering” sending in more troops. Hello!!! That should have been the focus from the beginning. After his response to Katrina, is there any doubt this man is clueless. And what about breaking his promise to Pakistan, now the haven for terrorists, because he did not follow through on that threat. Bush needs to get his head out of the sand and see how terrorism is on the rise because of his personal failures as our commander in chief. If he really loves America, treat our military with respect instead of taking away their bonuses if they are injured. Not giving them the proper training for the duty they were assigned. Not giving them the proper armament. Or not giving them the financial respect they and their families deserve right here in America. The media is no longer permitted showing these fallen heroes returning home. What a lack of respect!

I appreciate the soldiers, but I believe the true american patriot is exemplified by Susan Sontag, who stood up to the madness that Bush (unelected) and his people perpetrated, as shown in this article in the New Yorker. http://groups.colgate.edu/aarislam/susan.htm Had we heeded her words, we would not have needed the sacrifices of our young brave soldiers.

Hi Mugsy, How are you feeling? Missed you and Deni yesterday on the Obama post. Hope all is well.

Thanks for asking, Carol. Trying to fend off the lung infections that usually follow something like this, so still being quiet. Fannie and Junior went home, so my friends are looking after me. But if the fires start up again, the doctor says it’s Hawaii for me, a forced vacation.

Oh, damn. Sad to hear. Clay was a man among men, and a fun and funny guy, too. (See, boys, it IS possible for Mugsy to actually like a guy….)
