A Fashion Note From the 'Worst Dressed'

Liz Smith

Dear readers of wOw:

I have so few chances to bring you up to date on the latest in Fashionista Land. But I recently spent some of my vacation with a 20-year-old beauty of family acquaintance – one Lucy Baird – readying herself to enter Colgate as a freshman in September.

Lucy is adorable, “with it” and very au courant on everything pertaining to fashion, dress, product and adornment. She insists the “thing” these days is wearing a different top and bottom for your bikini.

This is how Lucy usually looked as we traveled with her family through Greece.

I hate to admit it, but I’ve been ahead of this wave all my adult life. I can never seem to find two bikini parts that match. So I’ve been doing this for years. I was “in fashion” and didn’t know it.

And, yes, Dame Helen Mirren and I are still wearing bikinis. We just don’t give a damn.

Liz, I always wore a golden brown bottom and white top. The brown blends in with tan and the white draws eye up. This photo reminds me of a funny one of me. My brother, his wife, kids, my son dog etc were on the beach across the street from my place in Santa Barbara. I was 36 and quite fit and tan. And to make my nephew laugh came out of the water twirling a long ‘boa’ of seaweed and doing a sexy dance. My brother snapped a photo because some Poindexter looking tourist was standing a few feet away with his mouth hanging open like he’d hit his paydirt for the day. Still makes me laugh. My one unintended public performance a la Gypsy Rose Lee. As to wearing bikinis into the sunset. Jackie wore one to the end, as did Claudette Colbert. I admire women with chutzpah! No one is ever calling me granny!

Pictures Liz? We’d love to see you in a two piece mismatch wading by the sea. Hmmmm? Or would that be waiting by the sea~~~~

I hope to look as good someday as you and Helen Mirrren do in a two-piece now!

Liz — you’re the best. As Dabney said — you go girl!!!!! I’m a size 2 — and still have a good body, but haven’t worn one in years.

And you just keep being in fashion. I truly believe that fashion should be what makes us feel good about ourselfs. Because if you aren’t happy at the end of the day what difference does the price tag make.

Oh yes …. go for it Liz…..I only wish I still would still feel comfortable wearing a two piece! But I have been known to lie on my back deck (in the country mind you) wearing only my panties. No airplanes please!

I used to be an airborne radio traffic reporter…it could be disconcerting to see from high-powered binoculars what people wore - and didn’t wear.

I am sure Liz that you look fab and keep it up girl! I am a size 16 and wear a full body suit but do not care either. The sea, the pools are not there for just size 0 people. We full sized babes should still be able to go swimming.

I’m at the stage where if it fits, it’s comfortable & doesn’t have bits that light up or make noise, I’ll wear it.

right on, liz..the other day i bought a beautiful strapless one piece…i havent had it on yet, but i know i will look good in it..havent worn a two piece since i was a 36/26/36 17 year old…(those measurements, considered ‘perfect’ in the 1960’s are really out of whack in today’s ‘skinny’ world) ….’dont give a damn’ is my catch word at 61…i’ve EARNED whatever i want to wear, do, say, think, etc…but then, we texas women always have been an independent lot who didnt rely on men to tell us what to do…..
