A Fashion Note From the 'Worst Dressed'

Liz Smith

Dear readers of wOw:

I have so few chances to bring you up to date on the latest in Fashionista Land. But I recently spent some of my vacation with a 20-year-old beauty of family acquaintance – one Lucy Baird – readying herself to enter Colgate as a freshman in September.

Lucy is adorable, “with it” and very au courant on everything pertaining to fashion, dress, product and adornment. She insists the “thing” these days is wearing a different top and bottom for your bikini.

This is how Lucy usually looked as we traveled with her family through Greece.

I hate to admit it, but I’ve been ahead of this wave all my adult life. I can never seem to find two bikini parts that match. So I’ve been doing this for years. I was “in fashion” and didn’t know it.

And, yes, Dame Helen Mirren and I are still wearing bikinis. We just don’t give a damn.

Liz, You wear a two piece? :O I guess, I don’t know if I could do it … I wish I could do it … Europeans generally don’t have these hang ups over sex and like us Americans do. I never could figure that out. Why do you think that is?

Hello from the west coast - of Scotland. I gotta disagree with your ‘don’t give a damn’ comment, Liz, unless you just had a chat w/HM and she concurred. Tho I’ve never seen you in a two piece, there was a stonking full page photo of our Helen in the Sunday Times last week and I’m sure it was not retouched; she looks wonderful - but she always has. And I’m thinking that is a big part of her allure. Attitude! She’s seemingly always been a sexy woman and looks set to stay that way. I think she cares. And why not? We’re gorgeous and we know ‘stuff’ and I’d really like to think our age ‘tag’ will be less of a focus as we boomers move on to that higher plateau. I’ve just entered my 60th year, helped my ex celebrate his 65th birthday and have amazing bedtimes with my 46 year old lover. I give a damn about how I look coz it effects how I feel. Too, I am frequently incensed at the ludicrous advertisements for the ‘over 50’s’ showing silvered wrinklies. Who are they? Take away the headline and I might think the people they represent are in their 70’s. ( Uhut oh. Did I just push the bar higher or become guilty of ageism myself… See how fraught this numerical tagging can be?) Anyway. Time for a reality check. I for one, am not silver - I’m platinum! And I do get a real charge from wowowow! Thanx

Three years ago…first beach trip with my now husband…I hadn’t worn a swim suit in a while…but had just bought a lovely black one piece I was getting up the nerve to wear…walking along the beach I saw a woman approaching…she had to be in her eighties, and yes…she was wearing a teeny bikini, and looked damn happy about it. I haven’t stressed about wearing a swim suit since…I just loved the “attitude” she projected!

This cracked me up. I was on a road trip last week and stopped at a hot springs in montana. I must have seen half a dozen young women in mismatched bikinis. I thought “hmmm… must be the new thing” and well… it is!
