Feinstein to Senate: Back Burris

Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s breaking from her party peers.

While most of the Democrats have come out against Roland Burris’s scandal-plagued bid for Barack Obama’s Senate seat, Feinstein said yesterday that she and her colleagues should simply go ahead and seat Burris. Burris, you know, was nominated by Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who’s currently accused of trying to sell off the seat in question. Most Democratic leaders, including Feinstein herself, attempted to block Burris — and were successful — but now Feinstein’s changed her tune.

Citing Blagojevich’s right to appoint a senator, Feinstein urged the Senate to give the green light: "Does the governor have the power, under law, to make the appointment? And the answer is yes … If you don’t seat Mr. Burris, it has ramifications for gubernatorial appointments all over America," insisted Feinstein, who chairs the Senate Rules Committee, which evaluates potential new members. "Mr. Burris is a senior, experienced politician. He has been attorney general, he has been controller and he is very well respected. I am hopeful that this will be settled." So, we’re sure, does Burris.

Feinstein’s been quite vocal as of late — she criticized Preisdent-elect Obama’s CIA pick Leon Panetta. Word of the nomination spread in the press before Obama could inform Feinstein, who’s about to take over as chairwoman for the Senate’s Intelligence Committee. Obama apparently felt bad about the situation, because he called Feinstein yesterday to apologize, and she accepted. Ain’t that sweet?

…but now Feinstein’s changed her tune. We flip and we flop, however I tend to agree with Feinstein on this one to the extent that senator should be appointed by governors at all. A better rule would be special elections in all cases. That’s not likely to happen as long as money can be passed around.

Agreed Frank, the senate needs to stop pontificating and lose the collective ego and start moving forward and concentrate on the job they were all sent there to do…

Yep and the sooner they quit screwing around the better—Feinstein is right and BTW Obama should have consulted with her on his CIA pick—that was not kosher at all. Slip-ups will happen tho—

Well, one thing’s for sure. Feinstein’s gonna make sure her voice is heard this term.

Feinstein is right on this one. Yesterday was a spectacle. Reid is opening up a can of worms. He needs to go!!

Now Reid will sit him. So he created drama where none was necessary. I just feel for the people of Illinois. They deserved better, but rules are rules.

I agree with Feinstein on this. Although I would have preferred it if Burris had turned down the Blagojevich appt. the fact is, the governor is still the governor and legally he has the right to make this appointment. Jesse White needs to sign off on it , otherwise he is making a power grab that he shouldn’t. Burris will probably do a fine job, and as far as Blagojevich goes, instead of focussing so much energy on this issue, the IL Legislature either needs to move on impeachment or drop it. Put up or shut up. All this posturing is taking a toll on the voters in this state.

Feinstein is among our best politicos—-i, as a former San Fran defer to the lady—-

I don’t know a lot about her, but she seems to be sensible and on the right side (per my view anyway) of the issues when I hear her speak. Thought, I wasn’t so sure about her complaints about the Obama team not letting her in on the CIA pick, she could have dealt with them directly on that instead of making a statement about it in the media. I’d like to see the Dems at least appear to work in unity for the first part of this administration!

she may be ‘burned-out’, being in biz or God-forbid, enduring politics will get to anyone—-certainly in Cal—-where you have a fierce Reep S. Cal and a Dem liberal N. Cal, constantly ‘at-war’—-it should be 2 discrete states—-

Illinois is similar. The Dems are concentrated mostly in Chicago, the “fiscal conservative” Republicans are mostly in the Western Suburbs (though most of them voted Obama this time) and then you have your Fundamentalist-christians and gun-rights Republicans in the Southern part of the state.

this problem is in most ‘high-pop’ states—-it goes to the old Greek saying, ‘Who then, is sane.’ not enough apparently—-
