Fire Revives Palin Church's 'Ex-Gay' Scandal

Sarah Palin and her church’s religious teachings are again making headlines — or at least propelling conversation.

The Alaska governor’s church, Wasilla Baptist Church, literally came under fire this weekend in what appears to be arson. And, considering the suspicious nature of the incident, one can’t help but wonder whether the church was specifically targeted because of Palin’s long history there. That’s one of the theories, of course, and has brought Palin’s right-leaning beliefs — and past scandals — back into the spotlight.

As Colin Powell pointed out last week, Palin was certainly a polarizing figure during her short stint on the campaign trail. She fired up supporters and burned up critics. But who would hate this woman enough to torch her church? Probably plenty of wackos, but some seem to be speculating that the “suspect class” can be narrowed a bit.

You may recall that last September, as people were just starting to examine Palin’s background, it came to light that her church had distributed a flyer for Love Won Out, a group that claims it can “cure” gay people. [There was also a scandal in which Palin was accused of asking her local library to remove gay-themed books from its shelves when she was mayor. She denied the charge.] Obviously gay people were not amused and called on Mrs. Palin to explain herself. It became a small thorn in her side, and one that Palin tried to avoid. Sure, the topic came up a bit, but it never became the headline grabber it could have during previous elections, when the culture wars raged. Well, the topic came up last night when Palin sat down with Fox News’s Greta van Susteren.

After discussing whether Wasilla was targeted because of Palin, van Susteren raises this point: “There was one little controversy that was brewing that the pastor was trying to explain to us about gays and some sort of meeting in Anchorage. Do you know about that at all, what that controversy was?” Of course both women know exactly what van Susteren means. Palin does her best to sugarcoat the scandal and describes the flyer as “[having] to do with those who wanted some assistance or some kind of counseling in dealing with any struggles that they would have regarding homosexuality. And it was a seminar that was advertised at the church.”

Well, that’s part of the story. Love Won Out endorses "reparative therapy," which approaches homosexuality as a reversible disorder. Those who undergo a successful routine come out "ex-gay." The entire process remains highly controversial and the American Psychological Association, American Psychiatric Association, the American Medical Association and scores of other health groups have come out against the practice. Later, when asked whether gay people are welcome at her church, Palin describes Wasilla as “quite open in terms of welcoming people into the church and assisting anyone who desires assistance or counseling or help.” What she means by that remains unclear.

What is clear, however, is that Wasilla Baptist is in a bad way for the holidays. The church had just undergone a major renovation and this weekend’s fire caused an estimated $1 million in damages. And be sure Palin’s planning on helping get things back on track. And, really, that’s all one can do.

:Yes, I would say the fire was in lashing out at Palin. She and her church follower want everyone to be just like her.

The irony of Greta doing a story on Palin’s gay hating church is hysterical. Watch any interview she does with Palin is it obvious Greta is soooo in love with her.

Everyone has the right to attend church or not to attend church. However trying to burn down a church is not good. That is a crime. I heard there were children inside the church when it happen. I can’t imagine someone trying to justify it or thinks that it is okay to do that.

There’s a special place in hell for someone that would purposely burn down a church. I don’t care what your political leanings or beliefs are.

Was it confirmed that it was GAYS who burned down the church? I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a set-up, considering how many Americans try to villainize the LGBT community.

I think the staff who wrote this article can perhaps answer that question. Sometimes its the LGBT community that villainize the LGBT community. And that is very sad for me because I have a lot of gay friends.

Sometimes its the LGBT community that villainize the LGBT community.” (I don’t think villainize is a word…? My brain somehow must have combined demonize with vilify or something. LOL) This is sadly TOO TRUE. I rarely associate myself with the LGBT community (I have never even been to a Pride parade my entire life and don’t ever intend on attending one) and that is one of the reasons. The other is how judgmental and divided many of them tend to be toward one another, and especially the hypocritical treatment of TRANSpeople by gays. What can I say? I’m a sucker for a genderbender. As for the church burning, I don’t know why I’m SURPRISED that everyone (including the irresponsible journalists who should know better) immediately presumed that this atrocity was related to the church’s homophobia. When I first heard the news, I just figured the culprit was anti-Palin in general. She has a LOT of enemies, not just gays.

villainize—I like it! good word. I agree with Krissi—probably anti-Palin rather than gays—too many “journalists”. and I use the term loosely. jump to the obvious and the shocking rather than thinking things through.

Freedom of Religion is one of the Cornerstones of America! The burning of a church should be condemned. No matter what your politics, the media and David Letterman’s treatment of this issue in Regard to Palin’s church should wake us all up to the real intent of the Leaders of the Democrats. We should all be aware that the “Choices” they promote are really only the choices they, themselves would make. We are supposed to live in a place where we can practice religion, unharmed.

It is the liberal media who keeps bringing up this Gay “conversion” thing…they are the ones pointing the finger at the LGBT community! They are trying to justify the act, but inadvertently pointing a finger at their own followers.
