Former eBay CEO Meg Whitman to Make Run for Governor?

Meg Whitman has done it all. The Harvard MBA ran eBay for ten years, was an adviser and surrogate to Republican presidential contenders Mitt Romney and John McCain, and she’s sat on boards for DreamWorks Animation and Proctor & Gamble. No wonder she’s one of only seven women to have been repeatedly ranked among the world’s most influential people by Time magazine. Well, now Whitman may be looking for a new role for her impressive resume: governor of California.

The San Jose Mercury News says sources close to Whitman insist the renaissance woman will soon announce that she’s looking to run on the Republican ticket to replace Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, whose time in the governor’s mansion ends in 2011. Though Whitman’s not mentioning anything publicly, she did just resign from eBay and other corporate boards, moves that lead many to believe she’s looking to become more of a free agent.

Whitman spokesman Henry Gomez declined to comment "on anything having to do with the governor’s race," but noted that Whitman "has said before, and it’s been widely reported, that she is considering a run." And she’s well placed to win the Republican nomination.

Whitman has been an active political contributor to various Republicans. During her time as national co-chair of Romney’s campaign, Whitman reportedly helped him rake in $6 million in one day. Then, after Romney lost the primaries, Whitman helped John McCain by throwing about $91,000 to his presidential efforts. Whitman, who’s worth an estimated $1.3 billion, also supported Republican politicians across the country, like Sen. Susan Collins of Maine.

Whitman’s going to have some stiff competition — including Republican California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner and former U.S. Rep. Tom Campbell. Former Hewlett-Packard CEO and fellow McCain surrogate Carly Fiorina also may be interested. Democratic contenders may include San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, Lt. Gov. John Garamendi and U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, among others. With her massive rolodex, bank accounts and steely determination, however, we have a feeling Whitman could give all these potential rivals a run for their money.

I’m the first one to want women to get ahead - BUT they also have to be deserving! As a 10 year Ebay seller, here’s my take on Whitman: Meg Whitman conveniently forgets a couple of things: 1) She groomed John Donahoe to take over Ebay for her. Donahoe went on to destroy Ebay and put thousands of small sellers out of business. Sellers he called “flea market” and just “noise”! His statement: “Meg’s vision and leadership and her passion for the eBay community have helped create economic opportunity for millions of people worldwide ” Is a bald-faced lie! The Ebay “community” they speak of is in their minds only! They’ve done nothing but milk sellers like a ready herd of cattle! 2) Meg, there are an awful lot of those out of business small sellers in California - remember them? The retired, the disabled, the stay at home moms and the out of work dads? All those that your cohort pushed aside in favor of big box store “diamond sellers”? They have good memories and they have blood in their eyes for what Whitman/Donahoe did to them and for what ebay has become! So…come on Meg - spend some of those billions you took off the backs of sellers and waste it on a silly bid for an office you don’t deserve!

This is good news. Former Governor and current State’s Attorney General Jerry Brown is said to be eyeing the govern ship once again. We Republicans welcome his candidacy….in other words, we think without too much effort we can win. However, the big problem in California is the Legislature. Even though we have term limits in place, the Assembly and Senate chambers are filled with folks who want to spend, spend and spend some more. They drove the State into near bankruptcy before we recalled their leader, the then Democratic Governor, but Arnold has had only a tiny success in controlling the spending spree. There are just too many opposition votes in the Legislature to bring about fiscal responsibility to the State. Meg Whitman? Hmm, interesting candidate; a citizen candidate? Maybe.

I really don’t know her but I never had ill feelings for her while I was selling on ebay when she was at the helm. When you run a business (and selling on ebay is running a business) you have expenses. Naturally the expenses under ebay went up as ebay grew and added new features and tools, but my profits also went up as my business grew. Some people wanted ebay to be a free thing for sellers and I saw some sellers complain but ebay still exists and is still going strong so I must assume that the majority of people didn’t hate ebay and are still selling. While there, Meg Whitman made sure ebay grew while she was in charge. I was impressed with her talents. If she uses the same talents as a political candidate, she should do ok. The current governor was an actor and certainly not as educated as Ms. Whitman. And I’m still chuckling over the MInnesota governor Jesse Ventura who was a fighter. After suffering under the hands of Blagojevich who was a Chicago political machine attorney who used the ins and outs of law to perform his corruption, anyone would be a good candidate for governor as long as the name isn’t connected to Blago and the Chicago political machine.

Ok Meg: As General manager of Hasbro you and you company used Chinese workers 7 days a week, 13.5 hr shift for a grand total of 93 hrs. How’s slave labor doing these days Meg? While CEO of E-Bay someone tried to sell a Vietnamese girl on your site and it only took 3 days for you guys to find this out? As President of StrideRite you allowed the following to happen: Sixteen-year-olds put toxic glue onto Keds sneakers with their bare hands. When we visited the factory in July 1999, they were producing Keds sneakers for Stride Rite… When you went through the adhesive department where they worked your eyes stung from the strong chemical vapors. There was no special ventilation, nor were gloves or masks provided to the workers. The company general manager said they came to China “for the cheap labor” and “to get away from the unions in South Korea.” According to the company the average wage was 42 cents an hour. — Another National Labor Committee Report Great CEO there Meg and now the Repubs want you to shill for them because of the money you can afford to spend on your campaign made on the backs of Asian labor. Way to go Meg.

Goodness, Frank, I was not aware of this association with sweat shops and child labor. I’ll have to think twice before I make a decision on this one. Thank you for the eye opener.
