Fran Drescher Still Considering 2010 NY Senate Run

Fran Drescher’s still holding out hope for a future career in politics.

Known by many for her role in the 1990s sitcom "The Nanny," the Queens-born actress said last fall that she would like to be considered for Hillary Clinton’s Senate seat. She obviously didn’t get that — Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand did — but Drescher told US News and World Report that she’s not giving up her senatorial aspirations.

"It is something that I am very seriously contemplating," Drescher told the Whispers blog. She also doesn’t seem fazed by the fact that Gillibrand is a great fund-raiser and a favorite among upstaters. "I could set up very quickly if I throw my hat in the ring," says the cancer survivor and advocate. "I feel like I can generate an interesting, and even a crossover, mix of people who would come to my support."

Meanwhile, New York Rep. Carolyn Maloney, who made it very clear to New York Gov. David Paterson she wanted Clinton’s seat, is staying mum over whether she will challenge Gillibrand in 2010, even though many reports say she’s good and ready for a fight.

"Right now, I am working on creating jobs in my district and across the country," the Long Island representative told MSNBC today when asked whether she would run.

Well, we definitely need all the help we can get in that area!

I would love to see Drescher tell Newt Gingrich to talk to the hand.

Why does think she ought to be elected? Why does she want to be Senate? And, after all the discussion of Caroline Kennedy not having enough experience, why would she be better?

Diana, My hat is off to Fran as far as her being an advocate for health care. But while I’ve got my hat in one hand, I’m scratching my head with the other. I don’t get it either. I think she makes a great catalyst though. Also, I can’t quite get the “Nanny” image out of my head. But more importantly, she isn’t qualified.

NP, I, too, am an advocate care AND women’s issues, but I can’t imagine that I could waltz into the Dem Headquarters and have them take me seriously if I wanted to be Senator. Most of us on this site are advocates for health care and womens rights and a whole bunch of things. BTW, I have always liked your avatar. What kind of perfume bottle is it?

Hi Diana, You are on point here. This image is one of Guerlain’s L’Heure Bleue fragrance. I liked it too. Thank you. Also, I have enjoyed reading your posts on Dr. Holly Anderson’s daily topics. You so often give helpful information, such as the Diabetes magazine. I noted that down. I’m signed up for a pre-diabetes prevention class this month. Take care,

Diana, I meant “on point” about waltzing into the Dem headquarters, not re the perfume bottle. But you got that!

NP, My son-in-law has had diabetes I since he was a teenager, so I have learned a lot about it over the years. He has been on a pump for about 3 years now, and loves it.

Diana, I’ve only recently read a little about how the pumps work. I’m glad it’s helpful for him. I’m hoping I can turn things around by diet and exercise at this point. We’ll see. I’d better get real serious about my treadmill. I’ll just turn on Charlie Rose. Should help motivate me!

Are you pre, or do you have Diabetes 2? He went to the pump when they perfected them. Now, I think he is able to read his sugars automatically, so he doesn’t have to stick himself 6-8 times a day. The trouble people get into with diabetes is that they don’t understand how insulin is produced and its function, and so, eat the wrong thing at the wrong time. He was very lucky because when he went to Va. Tech during graduate school, he ended up in a Diabetes Clinic in Roanoke Va. that got him regulated, and then when they lived in Sunnyvale Ca, he was in the Diabetes Clinic at Stanford.

Hi Diana, Good thing for your son in law that he was near these Diabetes clinics. Yes. Well, I was told I am Pre-diabetic. My blood sugar was 105. Bloodwork: Tri was 113, HDL was 89, LDL was 165. I’m 5’ 6” and weight is 133. My doctor told me to eat a lot more greens, and exercise. I’ll go to this pre diabetes prevention seminar on Feb. 25th, and then eat spinach and work out like a maniac. Then back to my doctor to see what he says. The man I live with … his numbers are worse than mine. He was told that a few months ago. Keeps telling me he will go back to his doctor. Does he go? No. Well, I’m going. I hope I can turn things around with diet and exercise. Thanks for your interest, Diana. Most kind of you. I love my treadmill … I love my treadmill … I love my treadmill …

NP, Well, I envy your weight. I’m 5’6”, but I never admit what I weigh. One thing Steve discovered when he got it at the age of 15 was that strenuous exercise is the key. When he was a kid, he would ride his unicycle around his small town to drop his sugars. The danger is what they call “bouncing”; that is the sugar is way up and then drops very very low. That’s when one can go into a coma. I think if people realized the terrible things that can happen to a diabetic over time (heart, kidneys, eye, circulation) they would work harder in trying to control their food intake.

Diana, … “Bouncing” … OMG - I don’t think I’m going to be able to sleep tonight. No, Kidding… sort of. No, this is good for me, what you’re telling me. I know that you have experience and knowledge re diabetes. Your posts are keeping me motivated to learn and do the right thing. Much appreciated. You’re right. If we were made aware of the dangers of diabetes and other diseases, I’m sure we would all eat better and exercise more. Prevention is key. I think it’s great that Wow has Dr. Anderson contributing this month. And I sure appreciate your posts to me. This diabetes stuff scares me, and if I can prevent it through diet and exercise, I will consider myself most fortunate. Thanks again for everything! And all the best to your son in law re keeping things stable.

NP, If you are in pre, it is a good chance you can reverse your numbers; or at least keep them in check. You don’t have to worry about losing weight at the same time. Be sure to go to the Mayo clinic website, as well as the ADA to find out the latest information about it.

Diana, Thank you! I’m encouraged and hopeful. Mayo clinic website and ADA … check, check! I’ll be looking those up tonight. Then onto the treadmill while I watch the Westminster Dog Show. I love to watch that, even though I don’t have a dog. I think I saw a post from you on that thread. You’ll be watching as well.
