I Believe in Ghosts-Stories From Famed Medium Peggy Rometo

By Peggy Rometo

Well, I wouldn’t be much of a psychic-medium if I didn’t believe in ghosts!  In fact, initially I was just like Whoopi Goldberg and didn’t want to have anything to do with them.  As a child I did everything I could to not feel their presence.  Thankfully I never saw them, until I opened up to my gift as an adult.

I’ve had my share of unfriendly ghosts who go bump in the night, showing themselves by knocking 3 times on 2nd story window or literally coming home to a “sixth-sense” moment with all of my kitchen cupboard drawers and cabinets flung open, as if my home had been ransacked. I would have much preferred to find Bruce Willis and his camera crew there!  But let’s not talk about those times!  Besides, they were all before I accepted my gift and I couldn’t stand to be alone, because I could always feel that I really wasn’t alone!  Creepy. No wonder they loved to haunt me, I was an easy mark!

I’ve had my share of unfriendly ghosts who go bump in the night...

Now, life is much different for me and I attract a much nicer set of ghosts.  I’m sure it’s because I am no longer afraid. I now routinely talk to spirit guides, angels, and the dead.  As far as seeing ghosts, since making peace with this phenomenon, it’s only happened a few dozen times unsolicited.  The most memorable were seeing an angel straddeling my husband in bed (that was quite a sight and an interesting story).

My favorite however, is the time I walked into my son’s room in the middle of the night and saw a strong, muscular man sitting in the lotus position on a pillow hovering over my then-4 year old son’s head.  That one completely stopped me in my tracks. The vision was riveting, filling me with a powerful sense of peace and contentment.  Then I heard in my mind, “We’re just talking!”  I quickly looked at my child and he had the sweetest look on his face, completely reassuring me that what I was seeing was indeed happening.  I quickly left the room so they could continue.

I relayed the story to my four year old the next morning. Of course, first I had to grill him to see if he remembered anything or not.  He didn’t, but he immediately asked me what the man’s name was and to ask the man to come back so he could talk to him. So I complied. I immediately saw the man again, only this time in my mind – not floating above my son’s head in the room as I did the night before!  He said his name was Simon.  He then gave my son a very pertinent message for his age, which was, “Simon says, listen to your mother.”  My son and I both burst out laughing.

So you see, there really isn’t anything to be afraid of once you let go of the fear.  To this day, a full 10 years later, we occasionally will hear from Simon, especially if my teenage son needs another, “Simon says" message.

I think “ghosts” like “god” and “angels” are words that were overused to describe a variety of “spirit” sightings. That there are spirits outside of bodies that you occasionally can see, yes, I know this to be true. Would I call them “ghosts”? No.

I believe something else does exist—call them ghosts or spirits, but I believe my answer is Yes!

Carol- I agree with you. I wish I could see them. I wish I could see my mother as a ghost.

Not too sure I believe in ghosts, but I do believe there are spirits - and I do have some proof they do exist.

Elaine AL Meqdad, your intellectualizing does not always become you, even ‘tho, I agree from time to time. In short….we do not always know everything, even you!

My father said he saw an old lady looking over him one night in bed, right after he’d lain down. She ran out of the room, and he followed after her into the living room and turned on the lights, but there was no one there. He said there was no way she could’ve gone anywhere else in the house. I said, “Are you sure you weren’t sleeping, and dreamt it?” “Absolutely not,” he replied. “I was wide awake.” Later, he told my sister the day before he died, that he’d been seeing images of late loved ones like his parents, but was afraid to tell anyone, for fear they’d think he was losing it.

I’m not sure what I believe but I will tell you this story - my father died a year ago in September - when we came home after traveling to the funeral, I was putting my 3 yo son to bed and he asked me if I was sad, and I said yes, I miss my Dad very much and he said, Mom, he’s right over there and I said, he is? and the little guy said yes, he’s right there, pointing across the room - I tested him on this a few days thereafter and he always saw him and then about day 5, he told me my Dad had gone, said very pragmatically without negative or positive emotion - so, that’s a little odd to just write off but I don’t know what to think about it

Today’s NYTimes has a story about a house in Southampton (Long Isl) that is having quite a lot of ghostly activity. Altho I’ve never seen a spirit, I’ve been very comforted by messages delivered by a psychic from my father and other relatives who have been gone for many years. I believe a mind that is open and receptive is more likely to enrich one’s life.

No, I’ve never seen one…but after my father-in-law died we got their car that was used at their Florida home. He had been a pipe smoke, but never smoked in either of their cars. Well, one day I took the kids to school and a little old gentleman almost ran us down with his car so I stopped and pulled into a nearby parking lot and just berated that little old man! The next instant brought that smell of Dad’s pipe throughout the car and my eldest said, “Mom, I don’t think grandpa liked you saying those nasty things about that old man!.” The smell never returned, and I never again berated other drivers (Especially not older drivers!)!

That’s a delightful story, Chris. Children are often more open to spirit presence, and less judgmental than we become as adults.

A friend of mine was deeply upset when her father died, and about a month later one night she woke up in the middle of the night and her father was sitting at the end of her bed. He said he wanted her to know that he was OK, and that she needed to stop worrying about him, that he loved her and would always love her, and she only needed to figure out how to pass that love along. Surprised, she said, OK, Dad, I miss you, but I will do what you say. He said I am always with you, and then he disappeared. She said he was three dimensional and looked just like he did in life, and it was not a dream. She said he looked about ten years younger than when he died and his eyes were twinkling. She was afraid to tell people about this for fear of people thinking she was crazy. I think she had a real spiritual experience. Now I would not call that a ghost. Some people might. But he sounded like he was anything but haunting.

I think it is our unlived potential that haunts us sometimes.

That’s a provocative thought Susan. Perhaps the term ‘ghost’ is a poor one. It has many unfortunate connotations created by fiction and film. There’s an old house on the cliffs in Cornwall, England (near Sennen) that used to be part of a farm but is now an expensive guest rental. Many guests are awakened by the “ghost” of a horse that goes up or down stairs.
