Message to All Whining Female Democrats: Hillary's Out. Get Over It, by Barbara Goldsmith

Editor’s Note: Barbara Goldsmith is a prize-winning bestselling author and historian. She served on the Presidential Commission for the Celebration of Women in America History during President Clinton’s administration.

"Whoever is set up to be president of the United States is just set up to have his character torn off from his back in shreds and to be mauled, pummeled and covered with dirt by every filthy paper all over the country. And no woman that was not willing to be dragged through every kennel, and slopped into every dirty pail of water like an old mop, would ever consent to run as a candidate. Why, it’s an ordeal that kills a man. It killed General Harrison and it killed old Zach [Taylor]. And what sort of … a woman would it be that could stand it and come out of it without being killed?"

So commented Harriet Beecher Stowe when Victoria Woodhull announced her bid for the presidency in 1872.

The place: a distinguished publisher’s Park Avenue apartment. The date: Wednesday, June 18. The time: 8:45 AM. The occasion: a breakfast hosted by Gloria Steinem. The stated objective: to bring the Women for Barack Obama and the Hillary Clinton supporters into one cohesive group.

These emotional outbursts ... are just what male chauvinists say about woman's incapacity to coolly assess a situation.

The little blonde stood, arms akimbo, and vented her wrath: "I am a good friend of Hillary’s," she declared. "I’ve had her at my home, and I have always been there for her. I am here to tell you how angry and hurt I am and how hurt all Hillary supporters are by the sexist, disgusting way Hillary was attacked and pilloried by the media in this campaign. Until some acknowledgment of that is made, I am full of anger. I know the Democratic Party could have stopped it. I know Obama could have stopped it. But, everyone was silent and just let it happen and …"

Next up: a professor who took a full six minutes announcing her credentials and then said, "I used up my entire pension supporting Hillary. I went to 13 states and knocked on doors. I want everyone in this room to write in the name of Hillary Clinton on the ballot when they go to vote and …"

Another woman announced that she intended to launch a boycott of MSNBC. "I want all of you to sign my petition."

The chairperson of "Women for Obama," Becky Carroll, had flown in from Chicago and said she was tired. You’d be tired too with all that invective flying around the room. But Ms. Carroll couldn’t very well intervene, if catharsis was what was needed to unite Democratic women. Ms. Carroll was in a tough position – too tough to point out that Hillary Clinton had announced that her supporters should "take our energy, our passion, our strength and do all we can to help elect Barack Obama …" These emotional outbursts — and there were several more — are just what male chauvinists say about woman’s incapacity to coolly assess a situation.

Please note that so far there’s been no "I" word in my comments. The "I did this, I did that, I am hurt, I may not vote, I may vote for McCain," and so forth that have been heard lately may be what’s holding Democratic women back from fulfilling their potential to become a powerful coalition that could help guide this country back to safer ground.

I know Kitty! What is with WOW? How can they allow stuff like this? We should be celebrating things like suffrage because hasn’t even been 100 years yet!

Unless we learn to take it like a man we’re never going to get their respect. I believe that is what Hillary was doing as she endured their digs. However Bill didn’t handle them too well. They are right they didn’t kill her. Bruised and battered but not dead.

Hi Kitty, Any idea how many of the “posters” here are actually people cutting and pasting from the McCain website? http://www.johnmccain.com/ActionCenter/BlogInteract/BlogInteract.aspx If you send them your post you can be awarded “on-line points.” Oh Goodie!

That’s right ladies. The democratic party is full of sexists. You’re too good for them. Poor Hillary was brutalized by those people, but you can count on us in the GOP to stand by you. After all, when was the last time WE let you down?

Are youppppppOkay, let me grasp what’s going on here. A website created by some highly-accomplished and interesting women, putatively FOR women, now publishes pejorative rhetoricrhetoric ABOUT women democrats who do not support Barack Obama. How dismal. The presumption that some pathetic peevishness underlies this position, rather than a careful, intelligent analysis of Obama’s history, support base and agenda, is shocking in such a context. It should not be necessary to point out, here, that women are immensely capable of independent thought. Instead of falling into a mindless “party unity” lockstep trampling the intellectual integrity of thousands of women, I suggest that you stand back for a minute. Accept the possible validity of a view you choose not to understand. Interview an anti-Obama woman journalist. At the very least, read the papers to get an inkling of what this guy’s really up to. But stop denigrating women. Th

Thank you! I just gave the Get Over IT lecture at dinner with a bunch of women last night… Obama will be nominated. He will choose someone as his vice president. And, please remember, there is also a cabinet that is supposed to be involved in his decisions. Yes, Sen. Clinton came as close as any woman to being President. She may yet again. And, she has a huge future in any direction she chooses to go. I know she will be very involved in both this Democratic race and the Obama White House, God willing. I voted for Sen. Clinton in my state primary. But, I will not hesitate to vote and also do all I can to get Obama elected. The future of our nation is ahelluva lot more important than my bruised ego for not getting its way. Now, we have work to do. Let’s get out there and do it. Our mantra should be, are you better off that you were 8(count ‘em 8) years ago? Can you stand 4 more?

Try as they might to convince us otherwise, the stars aren’t happily lining up in the heavens for Obama. Never was there an election more ripe for an independent than this one. Bloomberg could take this.

My Alias, he has people in his office to work his computer. I’ll bet he doesn’t make his own sandwiches either.

I’m not going anywhere near this one. However, I just heard on this morning’s news that John McCain is “computer illiterate”…hasn’t a clue how to use one. That fact alone would send me careening towards Obama as my Presidential choice if he didn’t already have my vote.

The computer thing was in my paper last week. One wonders how he can get as far as this without learning at least how to email. Sort of the old days when people had to learn how to use a dial phone. Disgusting, especially when I think of how he treated his wife by calling her a you-know-what in front of people. Come to think of it, I wouldn’t stand for being called that in the privacy of my home under any circumstances.

Diana: “Disgusting, especially when I think of how he treated his wife by calling her a you-know-what in front of people. Come to think of it, I wouldn’t stand for being called that in the privacy of my home under any circumstances.” Stop whining and get over it. How many times are you going to bring up this issue? How many times are you going to make insulting references to McCain’s age? You’d best get over that because you are insulting many older Americans, and BHO is going to need all the votes he can get, because for every voter who defects to McCain, BHO will need two votes to make it up.

Marjorie, I did not at any time refer to McCain’s age in my posting. Especially, I did not say anything insulting about him. Besides, I’m not that much younger than he is. Age is not a problem I have with him; there are at least a dozen others, in addition to the mess that is going on up there now.

Diana: “The computer thing was in my paper last week. One wonders how he can get as far as this without learning at least how to email. Sort of the old days when people had to learn how to use a dial phone.” What are you saying here? If I took it as an insult to elders, then it was probably intended as an insult to elders. Let me remind you that older Americans are a large voting block, and believe it not, they are savy. Discount them at your own peril. “Age is not a problem I have with him…” Are you sure? Because, age is the number one point of ridicule by the Democrats for BHO.

Correction: … older Americans are a large voting BLOC, and believe it OR not, they are savy.
