'Golden Goose' & Ex-Playboy Model Maria Checa: The $4.8 Million Insider Trading Scheme

Another story about a greedy, sneaky Lehman Brother employee didn’t really pique our interest this morning — until we heard that it also involved a former Playboy magazine firecracker and a high-powered publicist wife labeled the "golden goose." That’s when we started reading …
An ex-Lehman Brothers broker, Matthew Devlin, 35, cooked up a $4.8 million insider-trading scheme — allegedly from passing on valuable inside information that he garnered from following his high-powered publicist wife’s (who he named his "golden goose") travels closely, a joint civil suit filed by the Security and Exchange Commission reveals. The "Golden Goose," aka Nina Devlin, worked for international public-relations firm Brunswick Group LLC which, according to their website, provides "informed advice at a senior level to businesses and other organizations around the world; helping them to address critical communications challenges that may affect their valuation, reputation or ability to achieve their ambitions." Mrs. Devlin’s lawyers told the Associated Press that her husband obtained information without her knowledge by being close to her and monitoring her schedule. In a statement, Brunswick called the scheme a "violation of trust between husband and wife."
Allegedly, Mr. Devlin helped make his friends millions by passing on these tips he learned from his wife. One lucky pal (well, lucky until now — he was arrested yesterday on conspiracy charges) was Jamil Bouchareb, 27.
Bouchareb’s girlfriend is Maria Checa, a former Playboy Playmate, who also starred in the video "Lusty Latin Ladies." (We’ve never heard of it.) Bouchareb allegedly whispered advance information into her bunny ears about mergers and business deals provided to him by Devlin on nine separate occasions, according to the SEC complaint. Devlin once bragged to Bouchared saying while Checa’s a babe, his wife’s knowledge brings them the money. There is nothing "like a golden goose," Devlin wrote in a 2006 text-message exchange, the AP reports.
Neither Nina Devlin nor Checa were charged criminally. Checa is named in a civil lawsuit filed by the SEC. Devlin already has pleaded guilty. His Lehman colleague, Frederick Bowers, also was charged.
