Governor Sarah Palin, 44, Named McCain's Running Mate

By The Staff at wowOwow.com
Sarah Palin, Governor of Alaska
AP

Twenty-four years after Walter Mondale selected Geraldine Ferraro as his vice-presidential running mate, and less than 24 hours after the historic nomination of the first African American candidate to lead a major party ticket for president, more history is being made today as John McCain — in a surprise move — selects Sarah Palin as his running mate on the Republican ticket.

This dramatic announcement makes Sarah Palin the first woman in history to run as vice president on the Republican side and only the second woman to take the veep spot on a major party ticket.

Palin, 44, is a mother of both a son in the military and a young child with Down’s Syndrome as well as three other children. She is pro-life and a member of the group Feminists for Life. She is a sportswoman who owns a gun. She staged an upset victory in the Alaskan Republican primary by running a clean government campaign against the incumbent Republican governor, Frank Murkowski. She is against gay marriage, yet vetoed a bill that would have barred Alaska from granting benefits to the partners of gay state employees.

But, Kathleen, don’t you find this pandering attitude just a little insulting? I vote as an independant and have been watching everything with amazement as we seem to truely be in a historic event. I think McCain totally missed the point and I would hope we would not vote for a candidate solely because she’s a “sister”. Of course, vote your conscious!

And picking Biden to try and cover up the fact that Obama doesn’t have any foreign policy experience is not pandering? All presidential candidates pick VPs that will supposedly help them in some way—either bring a state’s electoral votes on board, shore up a weakness in the candidate’s resume—like the pick of Biden or shore up a voting block that was in question. By picking Palin, McCain will probably bring the republican base completely back—which was in question— and this will also energize what may have been a boring convention. That she happens to be a woman—all the better.

Why do you assume its pandering? When we know more about her we may (or may not) see why he felt she would help his ticket. Nobody wants to lose so I don’t think he would pick someone just cuz she has female parts. And I guess a case could be made for pandering to place Biden (old white man) on the Dem ticket. I’ve voted many times in many elections and I always vote for the person that speaks to me and my concerns be they Rep., Dem or Ind. and so I always vote my conscious as I’m sure you do.

We have been at this all day. What I get from this thread is picking a woman, a mother, a governor, a wife, with ideas and courage is a horrible idea because she isn’t Hillary—and a lot of people on this site hated Hillary. I give up. For today anyway.

Star!!! Don’t give up, I enjoy reading all your comments and smart thinking. I’m not on the list that much but I do appreciate all of our female comments but hopefully we can be proud of each other. I’m not a politician but I am a woman who has received many honors, masters in clinical feminist psychology,self-employed/ private medical practice and a business owner of 2 business. and YES!!!, I have been a international flight attendant and a cocktail waitress! I have also worked in the San Fransico County Jails as a lead clinician and served coffee/alcohol on international flights/cafes. It is very sad when we reduce oursevles to name calling and judgement of others.

Hi llise, I’m glad she is pro-life, but at the same time I agree, I wish she didn’t kill animals, they also are precious to me as well! :)

Alaska outlawed hunting wolves from airplanes 30 years ago. But Palin found a loophole in the law and opened it back up again.

What a rough group this is ! Why so mean spirited ? You don’t have to vote for her.
