Governor Sarah Palin, 44, Named McCain's Running Mate

By The Staff at wowOwow.com
Sarah Palin, Governor of Alaska
AP

Twenty-four years after Walter Mondale selected Geraldine Ferraro as his vice-presidential running mate, and less than 24 hours after the historic nomination of the first African American candidate to lead a major party ticket for president, more history is being made today as John McCain — in a surprise move — selects Sarah Palin as his running mate on the Republican ticket.

This dramatic announcement makes Sarah Palin the first woman in history to run as vice president on the Republican side and only the second woman to take the veep spot on a major party ticket.

Palin, 44, is a mother of both a son in the military and a young child with Down’s Syndrome as well as three other children. She is pro-life and a member of the group Feminists for Life. She is a sportswoman who owns a gun. She staged an upset victory in the Alaskan Republican primary by running a clean government campaign against the incumbent Republican governor, Frank Murkowski. She is against gay marriage, yet vetoed a bill that would have barred Alaska from granting benefits to the partners of gay state employees.

On the News Hour, some of the analysts were saying that they thought that McCain picked Palin because she took on the corruption in the Alaska Republican Party, put an end to the “bridge to nowhere” that McCain railed aganst in the Senate, and otherwise reminded McCain of himself. I wonder if he really didn’t value the political message of her gender as much as the maverick quality.

He may think of her as a maverick but an ethics charge against her? That isn’t being a maverick, Elizabeth, that’s been a stupid politician and abusing power. Whhichshe apparently did. Oh yes, her Wikipedia Bio has been tampered with—this info was on NPR

Keating Five again. McCain may think that troopergate is just her Keating Five scandal and No Big Deal.

Could be Elizabeth—what worries me about her is her stand on women’s rights, abortion, called Hillary a whiner, doesn’t think that global warming caused by humanity and fossil fuels—is pro big oil, and McCain apparently only met her once before he chose her—wants creationism taught in public schools—not very good recommendations at all.

To me it is evidence that McCain still has, in the words of the Senate Ethics Committee, “poor judgment.” Neither McCain or Palin are qualified for office. In my totally humble opinion!

I agree Elizabeth totally.

That charge that she called Hillary a “whiner” should make you guys happy! I remember many, many posters here saying the same. But now you are all about Hillary. This is fascinating.

I thought you liked Hillary. Now I am confused. Anyway, I liked Hillary Clinton, always have. I didn’t support her in the primary because she was too much of a hawk on Iraq, not just her single vote. She gave speeches and interviews about what an evil Saddam was over and over, even after February 2003, when we had the largest antiwar march in history, and Senator Byrd gave his eloquent speech against the war and Biden recanted his vote to give Bush the power to attack. So she was my second choice, never my last choice in the primaries. And I was sort of hoping she would get on the ticket as Veep, but that didn’t happen. Who called Hillary a whiner? Palin was saluting her the other day.

Yet another charge—apparently she did call Hillary a “whiner.” So people on this list whom I distinctly remember called Hillary a big liar, etc., are now damning this woman for saying that in the past. Have it both ways. Have it three ways. Whatever. Consistency is the hobgoblin etc.

Hi Frank, Let’s be fair. It’s an ethics charge - not an ethics conviction.

Fabulous move on the part of the Repubs. I was already voting McCain and I am a lifelong demo - NOW, I know I’m in. Yes, I am a woman and yes, I am pissed off at the demo leadership and YES, I will vote for this ticket.

But how do you really feel? On the issues? Do you agree with Palin’s creationist position? with her position on pro-life/anti-choice? Do you think she is qualified to conduct foreign policy? I don’t think she has a long enough track record to have a position on immigration or Iraq or other matters, but charm and good looks can only go so far. Vote for whoever you like. That is the American way. I just continue to be puzzled when people claim to be lifelong Democrats and in some sense of anger left over from the primaries, then decide to support someone whose positions on issues are 180 degrees from theirs. Why would you do that? Or are you actually a Democrat?
