'Gypsy' is Wow Wow Wow: 'Sing Out, Louise!'

Liz Smith

We on this site are very flattered and grateful to the producers of the best revival yet of the Arthur Laurents—Stephen Sondheim—Jules Stein classic musical, “Gypsy,” now on Broadway at the St. James Theater.

Their double-page advertisement reading "WOW WOW WOW" in The New York Times over last weekend made us feel so proud of the resemblance, which was powerful.

So, while we are basking in reflected glory, let us recommend that you make plans to see the new “Gypsy” — the finest example yet of this iconic show ever to grace any stage anywhere. As a minor critic, I wrote: “Not just your ordinary theater experience. This is the best production of the best damn musical ever!”

Come to New York and see this musical starring the one and only Patti LuPone as the indefatigable “Mama Rose.” And catch the latest and most magnificent portrayal of the legendary stripper, Gypsy Rose Lee, in the person of Laura Benanti. Get your tickets in advance via Telecharge or (212) 239-6200.

“Sing out, Louise!”

I saw this ad in the newspaper yesterday and was immediately struck by the similarity and thought, how cool is this? “Gypsy” is such a fantastic piece of work. All the songs are great and really stick with you. I watched it with my two daughters when they were young and we kept singing “Have an Eggroll, Mr. Goldstone” for days afterward.

Peg, my brother-in- law played Peg O my HEart on the accordian as a little boy. We roar with laughter when my husband imitates his brother playing the accordian, singing this song and tapping his foot.

Well, it’s a great song, isn’t it? My Mom used to sing it to me. And, even though I am formally Margaret, I have been ‘Peg’ since the day I was born.

Peg - Have you ever been able to explain how Margaret begat Peg, other than “it’s just an old Irish nickname?”

I have never been to a Broadway musical, and I wish that I could attend. Loved the movie, would love to see in on Broadway!

Fabulously fortuitous graphic!! Hope the show runs for years! For folks who haven’t seen a show on Broadway…the next best thing to being there is the dazzling and iconic Broadway autobio: Moss Hart’s “Act One.” Terrific. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moss_Hart Moss Hart opened his career at the Amsterdam Theatre with a political hit. The Amsterdam also has a connection to WOW’s Candice Bergen. Her first husband, the great film director Louis Malle, who unfortunately died entirely too young, set his film “Vanya on 42nd Street” on the Amsterdam’s stage. Rent it, and also his “Dinner with Andre” if haven’t seen. Excellent films (many others too but those were my favorites.) The film has interesting origins, read it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanya_on_42nd_Street I was visiting in Manhattan long ago and we were at a theatre related Upper East Side deli and when I heard the Amsterdam was being gutted. We paid the check and headed over there. Contractors let us in for a peek. You could practically see Moss Hart nervously pacing the wings on opening night of his first hit, witty and upbeat “Face the Music” about the scandal-plagued administration of New York mayor Jimmy Walker, and with an Irving Berlin score with cheery pieces like “Let’s Have Another Cup of Coffee.” Moss Hart’s widow, Kitty Carlise Hart said after his death that, “Remaking a life take’s a lot of energy.” Something that always inspired me, and she did it brilliantly becoming a leading arts activist in New York and making a fantastic appearance in “Six Degrees of Separation.” Here she is in the final scene, the hostess at the head of the table, while the great Stockard Channing makes her final speech with a terrific line about not wanting to reduce her life to an anecdote. Then she strides up Park Avenue—Free. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vs2BkJavaLY

WOW.WOW.WOW. - you gotta have a gimmick. I would love to see Patti LuPone in Gypsy. It must have been wonderful. Someone actually gave me a recording of Angela Lansbury when she played in Gypsy. (i don’t think it’s something i’m suppose to have) But Angela Lansbury is wonderful in anything she does. So it’s a great treat. Hope a CD comes out with Patti LuPone.

Saw this production opening night at Chicago’s Ravinia Festival 3 years ago — amazingly, with the same cast now on Broadway. Knew immediately that Patti LuPone gave a stellar performance in this part (this was with a very short rehearsal time because LuPone was appearing in “Sweeney Todd” on Broadway at the same time.) Loved the rest of the cast too; the staging, everything was much the same as it is in the current production. I predicted then that it would go to Broadway and would have a tremendous reception. I feel prescient, but then, I know a star turn when I see one!

the finest example yet of this iconic show ever to grace any stage anywhere”…but, Ms Smith, did you see Ethel in the show? and if so, do you REALLY mean this comment? I am sure Patti LuPone is great, brilliant, but not Ethel.

I saw the final preview of Gypsy with Ms. Lupone, and when she entered the theatre for the first time from the back of the house, the show stopped for five minutes while the audience roared its appreciation for her. And she more than deserved the pre-ovation; she was stunning, and absolutely riveting, and completely embodied Mama Rose. The fairly simple low production values of the show (no special effects, limited scenery) were the perfect backdrop to the amazing performances by the entire cast, and my companions and I truly felt we were in the presence of Greatness throughout Ms. Lupone’s performance. The show is truly Wow Wow Wow, and if you’re in New York, it’s a must see.

Just saw Gypsy last night and “WOW” is right! Patti Lupone is fabulous — she brought new drama to a part that is often played without nuance. In fact, the whole cast was terrific. A joyful experience.

Saw Gypsy last week - Patty Lupone steals the show. The cast is good, the sets are a bit weak, and the story lags in the middle of the first act, but it is worth every penny to hear and see Patty Lupone belt out her songs and act like Mamma Rose. What a treat!

this is really cool..i might be wrong, but wasnt the st.james a flea market for a while way back in the early 1970’s…i lived in perth amboy, new jersey at that time, and remember how sleazy the theatre district and especially 42nd street had become with all the chinese cheapy stores…new york city was the most amazing place on earth to a kid from a sheep ranch in wyoming…i loved it with all its bumps and boils..a dynamic city..love theatre…love gypsy…
