Liz — as Walter Huston (and Eppie) said, re age: “It’s only a number, baby.” You are the proof. You’re lookin’ good and are the best in class. Thank you for years’ worth of kindnesses, and have a great new year! love, Margo (Howard)

happy birthday to one of the great voices of our time a memory i will never, ever forget—- i was sent to do a story on liz smith for New Woman magazine (i think) and when i got to her apartment, every surface was lined with papers and flowers and books and press releases We walked around until Liz finally drawled, ‘oh, the hell with it,’ and we went in and sat side-by-side on her bed for an hour and a half while she entertained me with her wit and terrific stories. hope this is a great year for you xxoo martha frankel

Here’s your birthday horoscope from the Chicago Sun-Times (I always cut it out and put it in any birthday card I give): IF FEB. 2 IS YOUR BIRTHDAY: You are open to the gift of intuition and will be frequently and boldly guided by divine forces. Through this month, keep asking your higher self what the most advantageous next step might be. Exciting relationship developments make lifestyle and career improvements easier to achieve. You’ll be idolized in April. Leo and Aries adore you. Your lucky numbers are 6, 14, 11, 32 and 41. TV cook/author Ina Garten (1948) shares your birthday today. Many of you are sophisticated and polished. You’re aware of the demands of your society. You often prefer to work alone to do things your own way. You make things look easy. You’re very relaxed when you’re doing the “impossible,” which makes others highly respect you. This year, you will give up something you’ve been involved with for about nine years. Time to move on.

Liz: You first captured me the day I traveled to New York to hear Stan Kenton play at the Paramount. I think Mickey Rooney was in the Music Hall that day. I so enjoyed your material that I vowed to search out your columns and reports from wherever they might be… forever after. I miss Manhattan terribly and though I can’t travel there any more, you Liz, have always made me feel that I was still in that wonderful city every time I read your writings. Happy Birthday to you. You are the true spirit of that wonderful city and the magical world of show business. May you continue to enjoy many more Happy Birthdays.
