Have You Ever Met An Angel?

Mary Wells

Have you ever met an angel? I believe I know one.

When they told me that the biopsy of a suspected cancer in my breast was, in fact, the complete lumpectomy, like most people who feel they have survived cancer I fell into a period of great enthusiastic love for the world and everyone in it. At that time there was an upset in New York City about abandoned babies who had been born with Aids. (About 1987.) These babies had been left in corners and in doorways around town. They were picked up by the police and firemen and helpful people and brought to government offices – and, for lack of equipment, they were just left on desk tops.

At that time there was no program, no housing, no nursery for them in New York or any other big city. The problems that city employees had setting up nurseries in offices were enormous and sudden and on front pages of every paper.

I was looking to help anybody and everybody in the gratefulness of my good health at the time and I wanted to help those Aids babies. It was suggested to me to go to the Van Etten Center at Jacoby Hospital. I was told that the center was the first in the city that dealt with children with Aids. It no longer exists but at the time it was a rare and wonderful place.

I was impressed with everyone I met there. And I was overwhelmed by Marie Williams. She was a blooming woman, full of health and strength and energy. She was caring for a small number of Aids babies then. I asked her what she needed and she told me she needed a house, if she had a house she could care for many more. We worked out a plan so that she got her house. She then took on many more children who were born with Aids or born as drug babies and she took them home and cared for them. In some cases she wore those children next to her skin, like a backpack, for a long time and some of them actually changed from positive to negative and developed in good health. Over the years she has also taken under her wing or even adopted children who not only had Aids but also Cerebral Palsy as well as children who are mentally damaged.

One, (E), has Cerebral Palsy. He is a sweet, good looking big boy who is retarded, non verbal, wears pampers, is in a wheelchair, is 16 now, goes to school for children with special needs. He is not able to feed himself so Marie purees his food and feeds him — because of his disease she lifts him into and out of his bed. Through Medicaid she is able to have a person come in 5 times a week from 3 to 8 to help care for (E). This allows her to do what she needs to do for all the other children in her care in her home.

Marie writes to me regularly about the children. They were very small when we met. Now, one (J) is 20, her health is just okay. She is in and out of the hospital. One (S) is 20, has finished school and is courageously looking for a job. One (R) is 17, in school, having a hard time. One (G) is 17 and doing very well in school and looking into college. Marie is joyously proud of her – it has been a long road. Her health is very good now. As Marie says, “Thank God."

Marie has lost children who had Aids but her achievements are widely appreciated. Her entire life is dedicated, 24 hours a day, to children she is given who start life with no hope. She straps them onto her body and she loves them back into life and almost all of them live much better, much longer lives.

Most of us are warm, generous people who help wherever we can. But there are the other ones, the angels walking on earth, who are taking care in ways that we don’t. They give me certainty. They certainly assure me that there really are angels.

Yes I have met angels. Anytime I almost lose faith or hope, my angels appear. For instance, I havam approaching my 50th birthday in June, and I am not sure of how to feel. I am a singer/ songwriter and most of my life have been spent advocating for the less fortunate, children, senior citizens and the homeless. To debrief my emotions after each experience, I’ve always written a song or booked a performance at a local club to make me feel better. This morning as I was about to leave to get my husband to work, I got very depressed. I thought to myself: will I make it through the day, since this is the month that my mother passed away from a heartache. I was wondering about the people in my life who are true friends in which I can confide in. There was noone, until Diane appeared on T.V and the website was mentioned. You all are my angels, sent just in the nic of time. Thank you.

I go to a church, The Church On The Way in Van Nuys, CA and we believe in the power of prayer. One night back in 1983 while I was sleeping in my dream I heard a jingling noise. You know that place where you are not really awake and kind of groggy? That was where I was. I kept my eyes closed and started to go deep into sleep again but heard a voice in my dream telling me to get up and go open my bedroom window. I ignored it. I kept hearing it though. So finally I woke up and said with a whispering voice, “Okay God what do you want?” I decided to go back to sleep. I felt a pinch on my leg as though someone physically pinched me. I heard another voice in my head say “Get up and go open your window.” So I said, “Okay God, I will go open my window.” Now it was about 3 a.m. and I got up and went to my bedroom window which was next to my front door. I swung it open and heard and saw three men running away. They had pried open my screen door to my apartment and was proceeding to get into my front door. The jingling in my dream must have been them jingling the screen door open, but the voice, the pinch on my leg were real and I believe they were my angel protecting me. I have many instances like that in my lifetime as a believer.

I had an angel change my career direction. I decided not to pursue my dream of being a teacher because everyone said the pay and working conditions were horrible. I majored in another field. One day as I was working in a retail store-completely miserable every day I worked there-I was approached by a woman named Carol. She said she was here to help with the housewares department within the store. She would make food samples for store patrons to try. One day she said “Don’t talk to me in front of these people. They don’t believe.” I said “What?” She repeated “they don’t believe”. The patrons approached they said “hi”, I said “hi” back. By the time they left a new couple was approaching the sample table and Carol turned to me and said, “Oh these people we can talk with. They believe!” I just dismissed this conversation as wierd and left the sample table to continue my work. Everyday we would briefly talk about anything and everything. Then one day she told me that I didn’t belong here. I said “where?” (I was thinking oh no here goes another one of those wierd conversations again.) “Here”, she said. She then explained that in another time and another place that we are best of friends and that she had come to help get me back on my path. The path I was suppose to be on was that of teaching. She then told me things only I knew about my decisions. Shortly after that converstion, the store was bought out by another company and I was not hired by the new owners. I decided to go back to school and get my teaching certificate. I have worked in education ever since. Never made a million dollars, but I sure like coming to work a whole lot more!!! I will never forget Carol and how blessed I am. Remember, angels are real, if you trully believe.

My grandmother is an angel, like marie she has dedicated more than 30 years of her life caring for Medically fragile children. All whom which will die in my grandmothers home. She is so dedicated to this. You wouldn never think she is as old as she is because i truly believe these children that God blesses her with keep her young and going.

Yes, several times. They have appeared when I was in need of assistance, to disappear as quickly as they appeared. They have appeared and stayed with me until I could handle things on my own. They have appeared in forms that could be touched or other times, just a persistant voice in my mind. But they are here and when you have a meeting with one, it is something that you never forget. You are able to remember the incident as if it just happened. I believe angels walk and live among us everyday. For me that is a comforting thought.

I have many angels. Like the lady abouve said, they’re everywhere. Mine are important to me. Some of them are alive and only I can see them. Others are here for everyone to share. My biggest angel is my mother Patricia. She’s 74 and has MS. Not a day goes by that anything stops her. She cares for out elderly relatives but visiting them, taking them to their doctor appointments, picks them up things at the market, and I still call her when I’m sick or need advice. Another is my daughter Mary. Mary is 19 and in college. But it was her who helped me get through the hard times when I had no where to go after I left her father. He was mentally and physically abusive. Her telling me, “don’t worry mommy. You can do it. You’re tough…remember??” made me go on with life. It’s been 10 years since those days and I thank her all the time for helping me. My angels that are alive in me are my father, my grandmother, uncles and aunts that have passed on who cheer me on to keep pursuing my dreams. Without them, I would not be where I’m at today.

I truly believe in angels. I believe they are watching over me, and us, all the time. They remind me of their presence when needed. For example, 26 years ago my older sister and I were driving across country. It was the wee hours of the morning and we were driving on a dark, back road in Pennsylvania when a huge puff of smoke shot from under the hood of our car. We didn’t know what caused it so we pulled off the pavement on to the sandy side of the road. It was the pitch black you read about in books. We turned on the hazard lights in case a vehicle approached (we hadn’t seen one for miles and miles). Keep in mind this was before cell phones were available. A short while later a truck driver pulled up behind our car and placed triangular warning lights in the road. We were afraid to greet him but didn’t have much choice. We got out of the car. The truck driver was as friendly as can be. We told him about the smoke that erupted from the hood so he lifted the hood and after a while said, “I don’t see anything wrong. It seems fine now.” We thanked him for looking, and just as he was about to close the hood he said, “Wait a minute.” And he reached far under the hood and came out with a very small pin that resembled a thick bobby pin. Apparently it was the pin that kept the hood in place. It had fallen out of place and was lying loosely near the hinge. The truck driver told us that if we had kept driving, the hood would have blown off and either gone through our windshield or damaged something or someone behind us. After replacing the hood pin, the truck driver told us we shouldn’t be out in that area so late and told us the exit to the nearest hotel. We took his advice. To this day both my sister and I believe that two angels were with us that night: The angel responsible for the smoke signal and the truck driver. And angels have been protecting me ever since.

I’m convinced I’m surrounded by angels. I even think I know them. After having lost my Mother and my Aunt within a 2 year period I’ve noticed that they are with me. Shortly after my Aunt’s death I was cleaning out her house…no small task. I found a guardian angle pin. Three of them. I put one into my purse. Later that week I was in a funeral procession with the designated patrolman at critical intersections signaling us to proceed through busy intersections. For whatever reason a few seconds before I reached the intersection I “forgot” that I was in a procession. Slowed down for a few seconds. Just enough time as it turned out for me to miss being broadsided by a car speeding through oblivious to the patrolman. Just a few seconds, that’s all. Once you become aware of the possibities, angels or whatever, there’s no going back. You either believe or not. I choose to believe which is nothing more than being open to the possibilities. It has been a great comfort.

My Angel is my granddaughter, Mariah. She was a special Angel, because if you were feeling down or even mad, all she had to do was touch you and those feelings would just disappear. She had a way of making people feel good no matter what the situation was. The reason I say “She was” and in my heart, still is, is because: on March 30th, 2005 Mariah was killed as a result of being beaten and knocked down a flight of stairs by her mothers (my daughters) boyfriend, while her mother was at work. She was only 20 months old. I believe she is still among us, as there are times in the house when I can hear little feet running around upstairs. The “#$&” that killed our angel is doing 20 to 40 years in prison. Ripped from our lives, but not from our hearts.

Many Angels come and go through our lives. When you see them you know who they are. We just recently lost a person I really thought was an Angel. I never met him in person but the tv interviews he did you just knew there was something special about him. We recently lost this assest to our community and lives. His name was John “Buck” O’Neil. Just google his name and let him come into your heart. He loved us all…..and why not he was an Angel…a real one.

I know of two Very important Angels. Former Pres. Jimmy Carter and Rosalynn Carter. The Carter Center was founded 25 years ago. Their mission is to alleviate human suffering by waging peace, fighting disease, and building hope around the world.

Gayle Turner 4/12/08 4:53 pm Angel’s have been with me since birth. I look back and wonder how come I’m still here?? I believe my angel had a name (angel courage). When I was 19 years old I decided I wanted to travel. Well, I did and found myself in real hot water, and on my way to being sold into white slavery. The road was dark and I just happen to be in a car with the devil. I looked over and saw lights—perhaps a town??? I said, “Would you pull over I want to get out of this car”, He said, “#$*&^&^@,”, and I knew I was in trouble!!! The car came to a screaming halt, he got out—I got out, and suddenly a car pulled up behind us.. It was the State Highway Patrol—I said, “I want to go with you, and get away from this person”. The W.S.H.P. took me, and my belongings about 5 miles to the East—Oskosh, Wisconsin. Two days later I was on my way back home.
