Bill O'Reilly Unleashes on 'Old Lady' Helen Thomas (Video)

Bill O’Reilly and author Bernie Goldberg have no respect for veteran journalist Helen Thomas.

Discussing President Obama’s press conference last night, O’Reilly and Goldberg both took shots at 88-year-old Thomas, who has covered every presidential administration since JFK’s.

O’Reilly started in by calling Helen "The Wicked Witch of the East," saying "the old lady" basically asked: "Do you think the Taliban is hiding in Pakistan?" She actually asked if the Pakistani government was "maintaining the safe havens in Afghanistan for these so-called terrorists," but we wouldn’t expect O’Reilly to zero in on tiny things like details.

Goldberg, conservative author of A Slobbering Love Affair, also took a low blow at Thomas’s age. "Helen Thomas’s 15 minutes were up during the Lincoln administration." Poking fun at her age? That’s all you had to say?

Thomas also asked the president whether any countries in the Middle East have nuclear weapons: "Do you know of any country in the Middle East that has nuclear weapons?"

Perhaps she meant Israel (which reportedly has them … Let’s not forget about when Prime Minister Ehud Olmert publicly slipped about the country’s nuclear capabilities). Obama answered Thomas last night by saying that U.S. Ambassador Richard Holbrooke is in the Middle East mending a "stalwart" ally with Pakistan. He continued:

With respect to nuclear weapons, you know, I don’t want to speculate. What I know is this: that if we see a nuclear arms race in a region as volatile as the Middle East, everybody will be in danger.

Helen Thomas’s question to President Barack Obama:

The President handled Helen Thomas’ question like a pro, and deferred to her with great respect, but did not let her get the follow up question in. He skillfully moved on. I, too, wondered at her question because everyone knows that Israel has been a member of the nuclear club for years. But, everyone knows she is 88 yr. old, and really shows it now; she’s very frail. Surely, O’reilly will find someone more his size to pick on.

Bill is a bully like most of the idiots on Fox News and I hesitate to call it news because of its narrow-minded wrong-headed outlook.

Dear Site Monitor: Please note the blatant Name Calling by f p. Is this sort of thing only tolerated by you if the poster is to the left of Olympia Snow? I am really offended. Now what about that Group Hug?

If O’Reilly wants to find someone the size of his head he has to go to Rush - the two of them have the biggest heads around. It’s great Thomas is still getting around but maybe she needs to be retiring, time does get to all of us and leaving while you are still good is so much better. I love her work and hate to see her failing.

If O’Reilly and Rush have BIG heads, then why don’t they fill it up with something interesting to talk about. Beating up on Helen Thomas is a no-brainer, and doesn’t require anything in one’s head! It’s similar to being a school-yard bully. All talk, no back up. And missing a few screws…

By Sandbee (FB) 54 on 02/10/2009 10:54 am I agree with you Sandbee, although I hate to see Helen Thomas retire.  Who else will take her place?  We have to have someone there willing to ask those questions, don’t you think? She has been such a spark in the press corp. for so long.

There don’t seem to be the up and coming ones like her.  Hope they are around and just need to get a little push, she seems to be a one of a kind.

” Surely, O’reilly will find someone more his size to pick on.”… It may be hard for him to find someone that small, unless he wants to pick on Rush or Hannity.

Good lord, Debra, she’s 88, frail and yet shows up for work every day. And, I suspect she isn’t as “sharp” as she used to be. But, she’s an institution to the White House corps, so why would OReilly pick on her? I bet he’s not going to work daily when he’s 88.

No I think he’ll retire at the retirement age. Maybe he’s picking on her because he wishes he was more like you, part of the institution to the White House.
