Bill O'Reilly Unleashes on 'Old Lady' Helen Thomas (Video)

Bill O’Reilly and author Bernie Goldberg have no respect for veteran journalist Helen Thomas.

Discussing President Obama’s press conference last night, O’Reilly and Goldberg both took shots at 88-year-old Thomas, who has covered every presidential administration since JFK’s.

O’Reilly started in by calling Helen "The Wicked Witch of the East," saying "the old lady" basically asked: "Do you think the Taliban is hiding in Pakistan?" She actually asked if the Pakistani government was "maintaining the safe havens in Afghanistan for these so-called terrorists," but we wouldn’t expect O’Reilly to zero in on tiny things like details.

Goldberg, conservative author of A Slobbering Love Affair, also took a low blow at Thomas’s age. "Helen Thomas’s 15 minutes were up during the Lincoln administration." Poking fun at her age? That’s all you had to say?

Thomas also asked the president whether any countries in the Middle East have nuclear weapons: "Do you know of any country in the Middle East that has nuclear weapons?"

Perhaps she meant Israel (which reportedly has them … Let’s not forget about when Prime Minister Ehud Olmert publicly slipped about the country’s nuclear capabilities). Obama answered Thomas last night by saying that U.S. Ambassador Richard Holbrooke is in the Middle East mending a "stalwart" ally with Pakistan. He continued:

With respect to nuclear weapons, you know, I don’t want to speculate. What I know is this: that if we see a nuclear arms race in a region as volatile as the Middle East, everybody will be in danger.

Hey Diana, I always appreciate your take on issues, and I use the links you give and can read what actually was said or done. This has helped me learn to seperate the wheat from the crap that we are pounded with by the talking heads who take bits and pieces of truth and feed it to the public! Can you tell me how the people asking the questions of the President are picked? I noticed that he had a list and called them by name, and you mentioned that some are put up front, is it by rank, popularity or by who will ask the least offensive questions? Does the President know the questions to be asked in advance? What is your take on all the PORK that is attached to this stimulus package?

Hi, Jazzy. I just sent you a response to this post, but I think it’s a few pages forward because I don’t think I hit the reply button. At any rate, I didn’t want you to think I was ignoring you.

Good lord, Debra, she’s 88, frail and yet shows up for work every day. And, I suspect she isn’t as “sharp” as she used to be. But, she’s an institution to the White House corps, so why would OReilly pick on her? I bet he’s not going to work daily when he’s 88. By Diana T on 02/10/2009 4:32 pm I agree Diana T, As I watched I did take note how fraile Helen looks, and I thought; “Wow, this woman has a lot of P’Zazz! I am going to really miss her when she does finally retire. She is and has been one really tough reporter. I don’t care who the President is, she makes no bones about keeping them all honest, in my opinion.

Ro, I don’t think she will ever retire. I think she just won’t get up out of that chair one day.

Here…here……I agree. He did a masterful job of giving her respect and he put her back in the front row. He’s not scared of her, like I guess Bush was, when Bush put her in the back row of the correspondents.

Ah Bill—what a sanctimonious salacious jerk; Helen Thomas has been a star of the WH press corps for decades—she’s always interesting to read. Here’s Jon Stewart on Bill baby and the right to privacy: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/02/10/jon-stewart-rips-bill-ore_n_165…

Yes… exposing his own hypocrisy….. Bill O…. 73 has 63 yr old Bernie (who looks 75) on his show so they can make fun of and mock 88 yr old world renowned journalist Helen Thomas. Both wishes they were as impressive or as respected as Helen Thomas.
