Bill O'Reilly Unleashes on 'Old Lady' Helen Thomas (Video)

Bill O’Reilly and author Bernie Goldberg have no respect for veteran journalist Helen Thomas.

Discussing President Obama’s press conference last night, O’Reilly and Goldberg both took shots at 88-year-old Thomas, who has covered every presidential administration since JFK’s.

O’Reilly started in by calling Helen "The Wicked Witch of the East," saying "the old lady" basically asked: "Do you think the Taliban is hiding in Pakistan?" She actually asked if the Pakistani government was "maintaining the safe havens in Afghanistan for these so-called terrorists," but we wouldn’t expect O’Reilly to zero in on tiny things like details.

Goldberg, conservative author of A Slobbering Love Affair, also took a low blow at Thomas’s age. "Helen Thomas’s 15 minutes were up during the Lincoln administration." Poking fun at her age? That’s all you had to say?

Thomas also asked the president whether any countries in the Middle East have nuclear weapons: "Do you know of any country in the Middle East that has nuclear weapons?"

Perhaps she meant Israel (which reportedly has them … Let’s not forget about when Prime Minister Ehud Olmert publicly slipped about the country’s nuclear capabilities). Obama answered Thomas last night by saying that U.S. Ambassador Richard Holbrooke is in the Middle East mending a "stalwart" ally with Pakistan. He continued:

With respect to nuclear weapons, you know, I don’t want to speculate. What I know is this: that if we see a nuclear arms race in a region as volatile as the Middle East, everybody will be in danger.

Hi, Jazzy, I’ve been out of the house all day, and I’m using a few minutes here to get caught up. I, too noticed that President Obama calls on the press and most of the time tells who they represent. I was impressed and think it is a lot more efficient that everybody in the room shouting all at once. He must have a seating chart on his podium. I think it’s a good touch. I don’t know how they are chosen, but I suspect each president does it differently. Probably, they pick some that they know will be favorable. As far as the stimulus package, I have been reading every economist that I can get my hands on. Highly paid sound bite pundits aren’t a very good source of factual material because, most often they have an agenda of their own. I go to Peterson, Brookings, The Economist, Yale Global, and several good sites that have good, objective material. The economists are mostly worried that it isn’t enough. And, we certainly will have to shore up our banking and house mortgage systems, and restructure them..this time with rules and regulations, and oversight that works. As the President has stated, yes it’s a lot of money going into lots of different areas, but I am reluctant to call it pork as such. We are going to have to jump start our manufacturing sector, for instance. This will help get the Research & Development revved up again. We are one of the only developed nations in the world (if not the only one) that doesn’t subsidize our manufacturing sector, and it is one of the 4 corners of our whole economy system. If we get any farther behind, we are going to be in even more trouble than we are right now. Schools, infrastructure, medical research, healthcare—-all of these areas are in deep trouble with their funding. So, the stimulus is only the beginning of, what I am calling, a re-structure of our whole system. It’s risky and scary. But, if we sit around and do nothing as some are suggesting, it can get worse…much worse. I received a youtube this a.m. that is a real eye opener. Because, we have a lot of countries gaining on us as far as competitive edge and because they are surpassing our schooling systems and methods. I think it is a real reality check: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cL9Wu2kWwSY&feature=email It is time to update our attitudes. It is time to remember what got us through the worse periods of our history. We need to come together and think about what the bottom line is. We can go up or down; it’s our choice. The world is moving with technology so quickly that it’s on the verge of leaving us behind.

As always you are right on! I always look for and read your posts, I get so tired of the garbage that these posts seem to bring out in many, Most often it seems there is no real information from either side that is useful to any of us! They saying goes “IF YOU KEEP ON DOING THE SAME THINGS OVER & OVER, YOU WILL GET THE SAME RESULTS” ! Again Thank you for getting the information out to us and I will keep looking for your posts!

Jazzie, the head of the IMF, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, was on Charlie Rose tonight. I always enjoy watching him because he is such a great economy teacher, and I have learned so much from the few times I have seen him explain things Charlie was asking him questions about our crisis and how it intersects with the crises of the E.U. As soon as the re-play is available, I will send it over to you because it was simply a wonderful lesson on how all of our economies are now intersected. And, he also emphasized that globally, this is one of the most serious situations we have ever known. And, thank you for sending me this compliment.

Rather than making fun of the venerable Ms. Thomas, O’Reilly and the rest of Fox news need to be explaining why there was a producer at their network who has been arrested for possession of child pornography featuring three year old girls being bound and anally raped. The producer in question had already been caught with child pornography (on offense which got him booted out of the University of Michigan) and faced charges in the past. Does Feaux News not do criminal background checks on its employees? http://dcist.com/2009/02/fox_news_producer_arrested_on_kiddi.php

I am not sure I quite understand all of these posts. I realize that I am probably not as intelligent as the majority of you all on this blog, but did I just read roughly 185 posts filled with atrocious name-calling and bashing of Bill O’Reilly for his crime of name calling and bashing?

I hope that with the new administration, the attack-style journalism on TV that became so popular in the last 8 years, loses its appeal and ratings. What I never understood is even when the Republicans were in power their journalists and commentators were so vicious. Usually that is a tactic for the desperate. But perhaps they were desperate to cover up the eventual truth that the Republican policies of a war and greedy elitism would lead us into the grim national situation we all find ourselves in at this moment.

Liza dear, do you honestly believe that one-sided journalism and greed is limited to Republicans/The Right? Surely you can’t believe that. Greed and narrow-mindedness knows no boundries: political or ideological. I don’t believe we can lay the blame for our current situation on any party or group. Except maybe ourselves for allowing the misconduct on both sides of the aisle to carry own at the tax payer’s expense!

Scarlett…thanks for bringing that out…it’s both sides…the media is guilty of leaning one way or the other….I thought journalists are not to display any favors towards either parties….when they do, then their reporting is a joke and no one listens!..thanks for calling it as it is!

I am an old lady. If that is the worst thing you can say about me, I am also a happy lady. Insults? Angry words from mouths that have nothing of interest to say. Namaste.
